When should you buy nursing bras?

How many weeks pregnant should you be before you buy nursing bras. I am coming up to 29 weeks - is that too soon?

They say that usually around the 38 weeks mark is a good idea, as apparently thats when your milk comes in and your breasts grow.

I'm 34 weeks though and bought mine last week as i'm still breastfeeding my nineteen month old dd.

Sorry, not much help really, was i?

Deemented thanks - that's a great help. I was clearly jumping the gun!

I like to be organised too

M&S told me any time after 37 weeks, they also said to keep the receipt in case the cup size is wrong after the milk comes in properly.

You are organised, I don't think I bought any maternity bras until I was 25 weeks!

The girl in Mothercare on sunday said 38 weeks, which I knew from my first pregnancy, but I told her 'today is the only time I can come in and be measured/get them'. That was me at 37+2.

I was told 38 or 39 weeks, then had DD at 37 weeks.......not very helpful!!

MrsBadger · 10/12/2009 11:27

yes way too soon

I'd buy some soft multi-size ones (eg Bravado) to tide you over and then go shopping when the baby is 2wks or so, else you will end up with the wrong band size.

I bought 2 last week at late 36 weeks but have left the tags in both.

Will wear one while in hospital and live with it for as long as possible before breaking out the second as either my boobs could get bigger than I expect and the cup won't fit or my ribcage could reduce more than I expect and I will need a smaller band size.

You can't really tell what size you're likely to be until your milk has come in properly a week or two after DC is born IME.

Before pregnant with DS, I was a 34DD, afterwards - a 32G. Everything changed!

I bought too many the wrong size with DD1.

The first 2 I bought was when I was 38 weeks pregnant. My ribcage had expanded during pregnancy and women assured me that it would shrink back down. Well it didn't and the bras were very unformfortable so went to buy more then DD was a week old. But my boobs were huge then and 2 weeks later the cup size was wrong (far too big), so third time lucky with the ones I bought when she was 4 weeks old!

I'd buy some soft ones at 38 weeks and not invest in anymore until baby is a few weeks old. IME no point in being measured before you give birth, it will all change.

Thanks for all the advice - glad I asked and didn't waste money. Just read somewhere online you should buy them in mid pregnancy and felt like i'd left it late!!

How confident are you in fitting your own bras? I bought a couple around my due date, but by the time my milk came in they were WAY too small - so I ordered a big selection from somewhere (FigLeaves, IIRC) and tried them all on at home. Out of about 12 bras (something like 4 styles in 3 sizes each) I wound up with 2 that fit, and I needed a different size in the different styles. I'm planning on doing the same again with this one.

I bought nursing bras at 12 weeks but only because the maternity bras in Debenhams were either hideous or covered in lace, which I hate, and the lady who measured me said it would be ok to have nursing ones instead.
