You need to see a doctor and get it confirmed as to whether it's def slapped cheek or not.

You may already be immune from childhood or other exposure to it but it's not a great thing to catch during pregnancy and there are risks to the baby.

Fingers crossed it isn't actually slapped cheek and that you are immune if it is. My sister's DS had it whilst she was pregnant and she had blood tests which showed she must have already had it herself, thankfully.

Me! Search on my name and there's lots of posts. In short you are most likely to have already had it and therefore be immune, but if you are under 20wks then you need to see your doctor or midwife urgently and arrange a blood test, pronto. If by a slim chance you haven't already had it, then you will need repeat scans to ensure that the baby is developing okay and that there are no kidney or fluid rentention problems - usually around 5 fortnightly scans to be sure. Very bad outcomes are vanishingly rare, but you need that blood test to check. Good luck x

I had a smiliar problem. I think it behaves a little like chicken pox i.e contagious before the redness/spots come out.

Do you know if you have had slapped cheek when you were younger? Apparently you are more likely to be immune to it.

I had a blood test done it showed that I was immune to it and I didnt have it at the moment. I was told that if your past 1st trimester you are not as at risk.

Maybe ring midwife and get your bloods done?

Hope this helps in some way

Thanks guys.
I have rung my GP and I will be tested for it next week when I go for my triple wotsit test. He says no point before then as they can't do anything for the time being and any scans would be a few weeks down the line should I get it.
Ds hasn't been ill at all with it. Just a shame I have to keep him off nursery till the rash goes as I miss my wee nap.

Tbh I'd push harder. The results will take up to a couple of weeks and you need to get this in train. My gp sent me for a test the next day and my first scan was within days of the test results. Get your midwife on-side too. I was unlucky in that not only was I not immune, I also had an active outbreak. I was seen by the senior (sonography) consultant at our hospital - I found out later that he's one of the best in the country, which was nice!

I caught mine from my son, who showed no clinical symptoms at all, not even the rash, and had no symptoms myself - it was our childminders children who had it badly!

Give him a ring back, say you're actually quite unhappy and nervous, and would appreciate an immediate referal. I'm sure they'll be happy to oblige.

sparkle12mar08 · 08/12/2009 12:57

And btw you don't have to keep your son out of nursery is he already has the rash out - it's not contagious once it appears and the Health Protection Agency website says it is not necessary for schools to exclude for slapped cheek.

nickytwotimes · 08/12/2009 13:51

Thank you. His nursery teacher has asked he be kept out for a few days as even though he probably isn't infectious (apparently the jury is out on this) a kid with a rash is never a welcome thing. Tbh, I'd cross the road to avoid him atm. Also, he has been sneezing this morning so might still be passing stuff on.

GP is going to speak to the mw. Tbh, if I am going to get it, it'll probably come out in the next week as ds has presumably had it for a few weeks. If I have a test now, I would need another one in a week as I may be incubating it, so may as well wait a week and hope for the best.

Wish I'd never heard of the flaming thing! Ignorance is bliss. Honestly, if ds had this a s a baby I'd have put it down to teething and just carried on as normal.

He will not be passing it on if the rash is already out. The rash does not appear until after the contagious period is over. If you need your rest send him to nursery with the relevant page from the HPA site and tell the teacher and head that he is comming, full stop. They cannot exclude him and it is their job to be informed and inclusive.

You're righ that waiting a week probably isn't an issue re the test, but def send your son in. I would

nickytwotimes · 08/12/2009 14:13

Yes, you are right of course.
He is knackered today, so I am quite happy to let him rest. (he didn't sleep last night which is out of character). I'll see how tomorrow is. Luckily my Mum has come down so I am now up in bed and going for a wee kip soon.
