New to Mumsnet - BFP on Thursday, Office Christmas party next week - any advice?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to Mumsnet, although have been reading the boards for a few months now. Rather surprisingly I got a BFP on Thursday (I took the test to goad AF into arriving and get the disappointment out of the way for Christmas, not because I thought I would be pregnant.)

Anyway... it's my office Christmas party on Thursday and our team is notorious for heavy drinking. Does anyone have any advice on how to get through the party without anyone guessing I'm pregnant?

Thanks!

Could you possibly be driving? If not - complain of a sore tooth, and then say you're on antibiotics. The antibiotics used by dentists are among those where you really can't have any alcohol.

You'd be surprised how little attention people pay to what/how much you are drinking at a party - as long as you have a glass in your hand and appear to be drinking I doubt anyone will notice unless they have reason to suspect - order G&T's or something clear so you can hide them and drink a glass of sparkling water instead...or just waft around a lot with a glass of wine that you aren't actually consuming . I think this is less obvious than saying you are on antibiotics or similar rubbish excuse.

is this likely to work in the kind of party you are having?

Congratulations!

feign an illness and say you're on AB's.
Nurse one drink until evryone gets pished and doesn't notice.
feign an (minor) emergency to leave early.

Good luck!

Good idea about the antibiotics. Unfortunately can't use the driving excuse as party is in central London and everyone knows I can get the bus home.

Thanks Longtail

metronidazole was what i was prescribed for infected wisdom tooth and u CANNOT go near alcohol on them!! thats the excuse im using anyway xx

Get a glass of sparkling water & lemon juice. Or orange juice. As long as it's in a cocktail glass, people will assume there is vodka in it.

Or just say you are on antibiotics.

Gosh - I didn't realise so many of us were on MN this early!

We're having a meal then drinks. I think I'll be able to nurse a weak spritzer throughout the meal. Once the meal's over I can pretend to drink G&Ts

Thanks for your advice!

If you decide to go ahead with the antibiotics excuse be aware that some smart-arse (like me) may point out that nearly all antibiotics are actually fine with alcohol. See below for the ones where you really shouldn't drink.

If you want to spread your bets you could also say you had a slightly poorly tummy or similar so you don't feel like drinking much, then do the wafting around with something that never gets finished. (this is of course easier at a party-party than if it's a bunch of you out at bars buying rounds)

Antibiotics and alcohol

Only few classes of antibiotics should be avoided when drinking alcohol.

It is crucial to completely avoid drinking when taking the following antibiotics:

? Metronidazole ? the side-effects include flushing, breathlessness, headache, increased or irregular heart rate, low blood pressure, nausea and vomiting.
? Tinidazole is chemically similar to metronidazole and may cause the same reaction
? Furazolidone (Furoxone),
? Griseofulvin (Grisactin),
? Antimalarial Quinacrine (Atabrine)?

Thanks eveyone! Am planning on spritzers, "G&Ts" and sneaking out just after the music starts.

I'll let you know how it goes.

If you want a surefire way for people to gossip that you're pg, say you're on antibiotics on a night out on the town.

There is probably 1 person out there in the whole of Britatin who would believe a woman of childbearing age who says they're not drinking because of antibiotics.

no matter how much you "casually" drop it in the conversation beforehand

If you want to fool people, accept the first drink offered LOUDLY and WITH GUSTO. The best one to ask for is a clear drink like vodka and lemonade/soda as nobody can tell when you just get a plain lemonade or soda in thereafter.

If you don't want to actually drink even one alcoholic drink, take it to the loos and tip it down the pan. (Someone knocked it over in the ladies ). Then order yourself a lemonade instead.

Enjoy and Congrats!

Britatin? It's a little island off the coast of Scotland.
