Breathlessness

I know it's normal - but what's normal???

I'm 27 weeks and am struggling for my breath every day, several times a day. Getting a bit worried about it, as obviously there's nothing I can take or do, apart from plonk myself down and try to get my breath back.

It happens when I walk up short flights of stairs, across the car park to my room in work, just round the supermarket, even sometimes when I'm just standing up and having a conversation.
After a short stay in hospital for bleeding a little while back, I was told to slow down and take it really easy, and I really have been trying to, walking slowly, not doing too much in a day, but even the easiest of tasks seem to be taking my breath away at the moment.
I only have a small bump and am not carrying much extra weight at all, was only very slight to start with, so what's causing it??

Anyone else had this, and is it just a case of grin and bear it? Any suggestions/advice gratefully received!

I would go to the doc tbh

could you be anaemic? that always makes me feel breathless

Maitri · 28/11/2009 18:22

Yes, Fox, I had breathlessness too and it was due to anaemia. Stressheaderic, has the doc ruled out anaemia?

teletubby7777 · 28/11/2009 18:25

Breathlessness is common in the later stages of pregnancy but I would still go and have it checked sooner rather than later -- purely because it seems that even simple tasks are tiring you and this isn't entirely normal.

Is it possible that you are mildly asthmatic or aneamic as fox suggested? These are conditions which can be treated but shouldn't be ignored.

wibblela · 28/11/2009 18:52

I am getting breathless too, but that is coz I am asthmatic, and ventolin sorts it out, as well as upping my preventative.

As everyone has suggested, get it checked out, it is best, and most likely something which is easily remedied. Also, don't let them tell you that you are being paranoid! You are growing a baby and want everything to be ok

Thanks for the replies. At Booking in, my blood count was fine (11.1) but I understand it could have dropped, my 28 week appt is a week on Wed, I will def ask about it then. My circulation has become pretty rubbish too in the last week or two, pins and needles and leg cramps all the time, they may be connected?

Hi there - I got it and it was because I was borderline anaemic... I actually have mild asthma (mainly with colds and flu) and it was quite a different feeling - my lungs didn't feel constricted or congested, they felt clear. I started on spatone and the breathlessness went very quickly. However, I am still borderline if not actually anaemic, and have been told to take Galfor now.

I had a similar thing and a similar blood count (at the 2nd iron test iirc), then it got much worse and at the last iron test it came back as anaemic, BUT I saw the form they fill in and it showed that the very bottom of the 'normal 'range is 11.

I was a touch annoyed they hadn't told me that, as I was eating lots of iron rich food when I got the blood count of 11. In hindsight I would have taken multi vits. I was really miserable at the end, so exhausted and walking about an hour a day for work, I wouldn't want to go through that again.

I would get it checked out.
