Worried after seeing Midwife

Hi

Just got back after seeing midwife - not my normal one as she's away ill but another one (who I saw at NHS classes and didn't like then!). Midwife asks if I feel the baby move 10 times a day which I don't - I've never felt it move a lot (I suspect its my non-existant stomach muscles).

Now DH and I are worrying about this especially as she's told me to keep watch and if I don't feel 10 movements over the next 24 hours to book at appointment at the hospital for a scan.

How far on are you?

Scorps · 26/11/2009 16:21

Is your placenta on the front (anterior)? Which dc is this and how far?

sheeplikessleep · 26/11/2009 16:21

As long as you feel your baby move and that he / she doesn't suddenly stop moving, then surely that's fine?

I don't know though, but my instinct tells me she sounds a bit barking!

I thought the 10 movements a day thing was debunked - I remember my MW stressing changes in movements, so if your baby usually moves a lot then stops. But if you're worried about movements then go and be monitored for your peace of mind

I am pg with my fourth baby and each pregnancy, i go on what is normal for my baby iyswim.

I'm a m/w and the 10 movements a day thing is outdated and potentially dangerous.

You should be happy that baby's movements are normal for him/her. Any change in pattern should be investigated.

So please don't worry if you've never felt a lot of movements. Some people don't feel a lot of movements but there should be a pattern.

I'm 33 weeks - and it doesn't say in my notes where the placenta is - not very helpful really as that would reasssure me.

I said at my last appt 5 weeks ago - it didn't seem to be very active but my normal midwife didn't seem overly concerned - but this one says as I'm now further along I should be feeling it more.

Baby has less room, but if baby has been consistently this active or non active then thats the important part IMO. It's changes in your baby's regular movements that matter.

Whew - thanks for saying that everyone I'm feeling a bit more reassured now - after seeing this woman I just came home and cried. She wasn't very sympathetic or anything when I said I thought I might have an water infection - just no thats the baby's head becoming engaged?

I also forgot to tell her about seeing lights in front of my eyes earlier today - this was not a successful appointment at all - felt rushed in and out really.

Okayyyy...your last post..few things...

Re the water infection - did she check your urine before ruling it out?
And did she also check your BP? I think I am correct in saying that seeing lights/ affected vision could be a sign of preeclampsia. Which obv a BP check would rule out.

I agree with what others have said re. the movements. From 28 weeks a bub should settle into a pattern of movement. It is changes in the normal movements that need to be checked out - there is no hard and fast rule as to how many times a day a baby should move.

If you have concerns, get booked back in for the scan she has recommended. better safe than sorry IMO.

Liskey · 26/11/2009 18:18

Hi - she did check my urine before ruling it out and then said my BP was fine.

I really don't think the movements have changed at all - it does move occasionally in the evening - possibly when I'm not totally snowed under with work and not concentrating on it?
