DH has suggested that for my joint Christmas/anniversary present we spend the night at a really nice hotel, not far from my parents so the DC can stay with GPs. It looks really nice and I am very tempted, although tbh I would probably enjoy a night in a travelodge just as much as long as there were no middle of the night disturbances!

A large part of his attraction to this particular hotel is that some of the room have double whirlpool spa type baths which he really fancies, but I will be 5months pregnant then and I know saunas are a no-no because they're too hot, jacuzzis are just bubbly baths aren't they?

That's a lovely idea of your DH, myself and DP went to a Spa hotel last month when I was 24 weeks pg and just to be away and in nice surroundings was bliss.
I did a bit of research on jacuzzis beforehand and it seemed it was a real no-no, reasons included it heating up the amniotic fluid and bringing on labour/bubbles going up your fanjo (!)/bubbles affecting your blood circulation. So I braved the swimming pool in my maternity costume , avoided the sauna and steam room, but ooh the jacuzzi looked so inviting! Anyway I gave in and perched on the edge, with my feet in upto my knees, and it felt brilliant. I stayed in for about 40 mins, got chatting to other folk as you do, and afterwards I did feel all tingly in my legs and had to have a little lie down, so perhaps I stayed in too long...that was my experience anyway! Have a look into it and what other folk say and see how you feel.

I read somewhere, before I went on holiday to somewhere with a jacuzzi, that pg women shouldn't use them. So I didn't. Wish I could remember where I read it.

I guess it depends on how hot it is, as we're not supposed to have really hot baths, just warm-hot ones. Check with MW probably.

Sorry not to be more helpful.

oo - cross post. stressheaderic more useful! thanks

Depends on how many weeks and how hot it is. Personally I would at 5 months long as it wasn't too hot and it was a trouble free pregnancy, but thats just me, other are much more cautious.

I've avoided them as I've got low BP and didn't want to risk faining. Apparently there's also a risk of overheating the baby and an increased risk of infection as they aren't chlorinated. On the other hand, if it's a bath in your own room, hygiene will be less of an issue and you can cool down the temperature. I'd say go for it and have a fantastic weekend. You can also indulge all of your pregnancy eating fads at breakfast without wandering what DH will have to eat!

I think the advice is generally no...I really don't know why though! Lol at the idea of bubbles up the fanjo!!

Yorky · 26/11/2009 09:20

I like the way you're thinking fifi!

Thanks everyone for you help, most of the information I can find seems to relate to public ones which are very chemically and warm, but as this isn't the case I'm very tempted. Will check with MW at next appt but thinking in terms of going for it atm.

Bit intrigued by the risk of bubbles up the fanjo?

I did some research into this as dh wanted to take me to a spa. I found that the risk was due to the temperature of the water & where we were going the water wasn't that hot. Unfortunately I can't remember what the temperature was that's regarded as too hot.

Chunkamatic · 26/11/2009 12:42

I didn't realise that about hot water - oops! When i was first pg with DS I went in a hot tub (obv not knowing that this was a risk to baby) and as a result got quite a bad water infection, so if the jacuzzi is not too hot and is in your room I would recommend you keep some pants on!

Yorky · 28/11/2009 08:27

I think I'll check with my MW at next appt and if she hasn't got anything extra to add then I'll tell him to book it - I already knew about the hot bath thing and have been being good when I have a quiet evening with a book in the bath, and don't understand why the bubbles could cause a problem
Does anyone have a whirlpool bath at home? - are the bubbles just on or off or are they adjustable?

Thanks again
