Undiagnosed hyperemesis? Worth contacting midwife?

Hi all, new to this but everyone seems so friendly I thought I'd dive in lol.

Have been suffering 'morning' sickness, morning, noon and night sickness to be precise, since about 9 weeks (now 24+3) and haven't been able to keep hardly anything down.

Have seen GP counltess number of times only to be told it'll stop soon (12 weeks, 14 weeks, 16 weeks, 20 weeks etc...) and midwife didn't seem bothered either, she just said it's normal for some women.

It did ease for about a week but haven't been able to keep anything down again since Sunday and just feeling rubbish. Been sick 4 times already today and haven't eaten anythin - it's getting to the point where I'm scared to eat now incase of vomiting.

Any advice glady received and do you think I should contact midwife again?

Sorry for huuugeee first post but am at my wits end now and don't know what to do.

Thanks
xx

Please see another doctor and insist on something being done. I had this in my pregnancy with ds and after being told it was nothing and would go soon - it went for 1 month - I had it for 8 months sick day and night, with burst blood vessels in my eyes etc.
This time I am pregnant am seeing another doctor who said there is no need to suffer like this and there are many medications safe to use in pregnancy, anti nauseau and and anti vomitting etc.

I would ring your daycare unit at the hospital and tell them you are coming in for assessment. If you have truely not eaten since Sunday and are vomiting without even eating anything then you will have ketones in your urine ( clinical sign that your body is running of it's reserves) and will be feeling very poorly indeed! If it is hyperemesis they may decide to start you on a drip to replace the fluids you have lost and start medication to get on top of it.
Take your notes and a good book as you may be in there a while. If it is very bad they may need to admit you overnight until you are tolerating food and water. Good luck.

Thanks so much for the replies. I did eat yesterday but vomited within 5 minutes of it hitting my stomach and havent eaten a thing so far today. Think I will give a ring and see what they say - I just worry that they'll think I'm being dramatic

Thanks again

Take a urine sample with you when you see the GP - they will be able to test it there and then and if the levels of ketones are high then they should take it seriously. I did this three times and each time was sent straight to hospital for rehydration.

Are you keeping fluids down or are they coming back up too? That is the key sympton of hyperemesis. The fact that you say that you are scared to eat really does sound like it - that was exactly how I felt!

Hope they take you seriously and you are feeling better really soon - it is such a shitty condition.

I am just off nine months pregnant and have had to be rehydrated numerous times to keep going so this is really serious - demand to see someone and kick off if they wont listen - it can be a pain but if there a ketones in your urine you should really be on a drip to recover. Ask for cyclizine at the very least.

I have been in exactly the same situation - sickness actually got worse at about 20 weeks and ended up eating little/nothing to avoid being sick. Only problem is, I started to lose weight, had no energy etc.
Tell your GP again that nothing is staying down and you are losing the ability to function. Try to look a bit more rubbish than usual when you go to support your point (no make up and naturally dried hair work for me) .

Ask your GP to prescribe cyclizine - side effect is it can make you a bit more tired, but it works quite effectively. At 26 weeks, I now feel that I have the sickness under control, but this was only after seeing my GP twice and then a registrar at the hospital. I'm still taking the pills but am eating - hurrah - and a good amount of food too!

At the same time, I was told to cut back meals to a volume I could keep down - I was eating a cracker with a light topping, then a couple of new potatoes a couple of hours later etc - small amounts, frequently - and sticking mainly to carbs which didn't make me feel as ill. It's torture eating like this, but it helps you to build back up slowly.

I cut out dairy, anything oily/acidic/rich and caffeine until I started to feel a bit better after having read up a bit.

In my case, it was also stress related and it really helped that I was signed off work for a short time which let me get some rest and slow down a bit.

I know how miserable it can make you feel - I hope you start to feel better soon.

Thanks guys, have just got home from overnight stay in hospital with antisickness meds and reassurance that baby is fine!! Was on a drip overnight as I had ++++ketones, severely dehydrated and feeling rubbish but feel better now, just tired so off for a nap in a bit! Oh, and I ate my first meal without it reappearing

So big thanks for the advice it worked!!

Great news

Brilliant. Told you to go in didn't I? Don't hesitate to go back if it happens again will you? Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.
