I had scan today and it's 6weeks. We have 2kids, our DD is 9, DS is 6. Because it's been a while since I was pregnant, I'm just so scared.(fear of miscarriage etc.) It is due to my age, 41, and me and DH decicded that we won't tell anyone at work or friends until 12wks. I can't tell our kids that I'm pregnant as they will tell everyone in school. It's too early yet. I'm not sick yet but very tired already. I wonder how I cope next 34wks! Are there anyone who's been through similar situation to mine?

I'm not in the same situ but there are lots on here who are - have a look through the pregnancy threads and I'm sure you'll find lots of people in the same boat.

Congratulations and good luck

I'm 42 and conceived when I was 41. Currently 27 weeks pregnant. Have a dd who is 2.3. Felt sick for the first 16 weeks - as with dd1 - and very tired but things have improved since. I think the tiredness is irrespective of age judging but the comments on antenatal threads. Best of luck - sure you'll be fine.

I'm 40 and 35 weeks preggers - had a completely normal pregnancy so far, no problems, no sickness. Do have to be honest and say I do feel more knackered this time round! (DD is 3.5yo, so extra work there too!).

I too worried about miscarriage, and we waited until 12 weeks to tell folk (including our DD). But everything has been okay so far

Good luck, you will be fine

bigpreggybelly · 25/11/2009 12:21

I'm 42 (43 in Jan) and 33 weeks with my first, expecting in Jan.

I'm bloody knackered and feel like I've got arthritis and some back pain but otherwise OK. I'm sure there are many younger people who are in worse states than me, so I don't think its age-related particularly. Everything else seems to be going like clockwork!

I'm sure you'll be fine and congratulations!

I recommend getting a nuchal scan done though in due course, for piece of mind if nothing else.

bigpreggybelly · 25/11/2009 12:23

I was also pretty paranoid in the first 12 weeks thinking I would miscarry, but I think most people are like that, again irrespective of age. I was convinced that I would never get this far.

Just take each day as it comes - you get more confident as things go along with things like that.

There are lots of us older mums on Mumsnet. I gave birth to my second child two weeks before my 41st birthday. I kept both my pregnancies secret for the first 12 weeks, despite feeling very sick. It was just the way I wanted to do it. I tried not to worry about miscarriage - yes, the odds are higher the older you are, but the fact you have already had two successful pregnancies counts in your favour. There is absolutely nothing you can do to prevent miscarriage, so please try not to stress about it.

And congratulations on your pregnancy .

I'm a relative youngster at 39 and expecting my first. Didn't even know til I was 12 weeks gone as I'd had no strong symptoms and, frankly, had decided I couldn't have kids!

My mum had me when she was 44 after three other kids in her 20s and one stillborn (nothing to do with her age). She says she went through being pregnant with me "like a teenager", despite this being an extremely difficult and stressful time in her life due to other things.

And my current boss had her last kid at 44 too.

I'm sure you'll be fine.

extremelychocolateymilkroll · 25/11/2009 14:27

I would second having a nuchal scan done. I don't know where you live but we had ours at The Fetal Medicine Centre in London. It was £150 and is more detailed than the one offered on the NHS. You also get the results of the scan and the blood test on the same day.

stardustsmile · 25/11/2009 14:31

Thanks for all your reply. It's reassuring to know that I'm not the only 41 old pregnant mum! I will have a look other thread too. Thanks a million, good luck to you all

Not sure about a Nucahl scan. That is the thing me and DH need to talk about soon. I try not to worry about too much...thanks for your post.

Congratulations. Please try not to worry, you'll be fine.

I'm 42 and 18wks pregnant with my first and feeling absolutely fine. Had NHS and FMC nuchal scans at 13 weeks and although risk figures are higher than for someone in their 20s, for my age I'm still low risk.

Besides, having looked at the state of some women in their 20s I'm happy that I'm fit and healthy and don't look or feel my age.

BelleDameSansMerci · 25/11/2009 15:52

Congratulations...

I had my first (and only) a few days before my 42nd birthday. I too would recommend the nuchal fold scan. I had mine done in Manchester and I think it was about the same price. I didn't want amniocentesis (?spelling) though so went for the scan.

Honestly, I was very, very tired to start with but after that had an absolute breeze of a pregnancy and delivery. Also, quickly lost the weight (mostly due to no time to eat, I suspect). I don't think it's so much about age as the individual. I'm sure you'll be fine.

mozza40 · 26/11/2009 22:42

thank god that there are women my age in the same boat!!! im 41 and 6 wks with my 4th child. I had my three chn in my 20s with ex, now new partner and new baby (hopefully)

whensmydayoff · 27/11/2009 10:19

I think you may make your mind believe your more knackered because of age but your probably as knackered as I was at your stage (Im 33 and 34+ weeks PG)!

It's hard going no matter what age. I was knackered for first 12-14 weeks, overwhelming, dragging feet, nearly in tears knackered! I felt much better until a few weeks ago and now im as above again! I have a two and a half yr old, doesnt help.

I was just going to point out, my first PG was very high risk (i was 30), every problem you can imagine and I was very ill at the end followed by emerg C section.

3 years on i am having a very healthy low risk PG and looking forward to my hypnobirthing waterbirth!
Just wanted to reassure all the older mums that age might have nothing to do with symptoms/complications. Good luck
