SPD Questions, painkillers? and induction?

Pregnant with DC3 (ds1) suffered badly with SPD with dd2 and was induced at just over 38 weeks.

SPD has just made a killer come back I'm 36 weeks tomorrow, due to go back to consultant at 38 weeks but I am in agony, i cried in ASDA yesterday (how stupid) last night was awful for sleep I am getting shooting pains in my legs and constantly feel numb

Not really sure what I am epecting anyone to say really! Was thinking of seeing if there is a consultant appt tomorrow to try and get some stronger painkillers?

I'm going to contact physio again to try and get some crutches for some kind of support but with a 4 yr old dd and a 2yr old dd i doubt that I will get much use from them. I have a support and a tubi grip but nothing seems to help now.

Was also wondering if its because he has dropped further down?

I am surprised you were induced tbh. I had terrible SPD with both of mine and was still allowed to go 11 days over with each- dd was induced but ds was natural. I would say that as hellish as SPD is, I would really think if induction is right. WIth dd I was not prepared for the pain and ended up with epidural and legs in stirrups even though they were aware of the SPD. I think it really prolonged my recovery. With ds I was able to deliver in an upright position and while I did still worry that my SPD was still there for a week or so afterwards my recovery was much better. It is much harder when you have others to look after so I do sympathise One thing that I didn't expect to help but was amazed when it did was reflexology. Could anyone have the dc for an hour while you go for a session? I had it in both pregnancies and it definately made a big improvement in the hip pain.

Sorry you had bad experiences in fact if it had not have been for a retained placenta with dd2 (the induced labour) it would have been perfect labour (is there such a thing! ) i coped with gas and air on my bouncing ball and felt so in control it was once she was born it went belly up for me

I think that different hospitals differ on spd.

Unfortunately I live far from my family and my DH works full time shifts. My mother in law's mum is in a critical state in hospital so i refuse to ask if she can helpout she has so much on her plate.

I was doing aqua natal and that was lovely but I have not been able to go for weeks as DHs shifts conflict as does my dd1's school times.

hi

can only explain what happened with me, dd1 induced 38 weeks preeclamp no spd, ds induced at 37 weeks preeclamp bad spd, dd2 induced at 37 weeks very bad spd but preeclampsia was controlled better, now pregnant with dc4 and will be having induction again at 37 weeks, but possibly c-sec depends on pain, (my spd goes on for years after delivery). others have said oesteopath may help, had an epidural with dc3 and it made no difference to the spd, it did nothing for that pain.

sorry to go on talk to your consultant to find the best option, and get your physio on side, they will be able to advice on the best delivery option etc.

hth

I thank myself so lucky that with dd2 the spd pain went pretty quick after she was born still felt achey and sore but nothing even worth comparing to actual pg

when i spoke to physio last time (really nice young girl had lots in common ) we spoke about loads and she had lots of helpful things to try in labour

how far gone are you now? i am lucky that i do not suffer from PE is that another reason you will be induced early?

my consultant has been great tbh and we have just left it that see how we go but its got a great deal worse in the last 2 weeks

You're me about 3 weeks ago Madmissy!

I'm now 39+3 and due to be induced on Weds due to SPD.

It came on at about 37 weeks and I went from being a bit achey to being absolutely unable to walk in about 48 hours. I really pushed the medical services, and got myself some crutches and some physio asap. The physio was useful, but didn't stop my pain - she said if it didn't work, then nothing she could do would work.

After a week of looking after DS (nearly 2) on crutches and in absolute agony I really really pushed (i.e. on the phone to my MW in tears) for a consultant appt to get an induction. I got one three days later, and at that appt they agreed to induce me a week later. They also gave me a prescription for 30/500 strength co-codamol (the usual OTC stuff is 8/500) and it has really made a difference. I try not to take it during the day as it makes me very woozy, but is a godsend at night - it's the only way I can get a half decent night's sleep.

If I were you, and you're happy with this course of action, then I would push for some stronger painkillers and an induction - even if they won't do it early, they should be able to do it around your due date, to save you going over. Just decide what you want, and don't stop pushing til you get it.

thanks Naetha think i will try and see the consultant tomorrow normally quite good to try and get appt at short notice but we will see

Hi missy, the only thing that helped me was having osteopathic treatment, I was able to get rid of the crutches after a couple of sessions! I couldn't walk at all because of the pain prior to that.

lisad123wantsherquoteinDM · 22/11/2009 16:25

I was planned to be induced at 40 weeks due to hear problesm and SPD, however, friend at same hospital was induced at 38 weeks due to SPD. Think every doctor has different ideals.

MavisG · 22/11/2009 16:49

I went nearly 2 weeks over with my baby, (v bad SPD that I am now recovering from 10 months on) and it was a natural birth where my husband made sure I didn't open my legs wider than my hips - I didn't have a small 2nd degree tear sewn up because I was too concerned about inflicting more damage on my pelvis (it healed fine).

I did not ask for an induction because I was concerned about an increased risk of an assisted/instrumental delivery and the associated risk of further pelvic damage. As I approached week 43 I asked for a consultant appt to discuss a C/S and was planning to refuse an induction (except for a sweep) in favour of a C/S. But I didn't have small children to care for.

Acupuncture and - specialist - osteopathy helped me. If you're in the SE go and see Quentin Shaw in Tunbridge Wells. Also worth contacting the Pelvic Partnership. Good luck. It's a horrible horrible thing.

7 days... I normally get ocado deliver but needed medicine for dd1 and milk so braved asda probably stupid idea on a weekend.
Lisa def does differ with docs and think it goes greatly on how bad if you know what I mean.
I'll check out the sites... Big worry for me is my placenta prob again but apparently would have happened anyway

it is a combination for an early induction, but also have kyphosis and scoliosis, so have very bad back pain, so that also does not help, but my last physio said to have a csec because of how long it takes for me to heal! so we are really not sure what to do this time, but 6 weeks with limited movement has got to be better than 2 plus years!

i have only just found out about being pregnant, but at least i know what is coming!!!
