Is diet coke really that bad in pregnancy?

Its the only thing I want to drink at the moment. Ice cold, fizzy diet coke.

I remember being the same when I was pg with dd.

Are there any medical reasons for it to be unsafe?

A lot of people seem to be telling me its very unsafe??

My partner is definitely addicted to it. He will get through 10 -15 cans easily a day, and will rip the head off a can and sink it in about 5 seconds flat, I've timed him.

I do like them, but I know caffeine makes me jittery especially after I haven't had it for a while, so I think of a tiny, wired foetus getting the espresso shakes inside me, and stop myself from drinking it!

I don't drink that many fizzy drinks but I switched from Diet to full fat coke as a woman with MS explained to me what aspartame does to your nervous system and it didn't sound nice.

A can of full fat coke has (or used to, might have changed now, I know Tango has reduced the sugar in their drinks) 12 teaspoons of sugar.

I only know that because I'm diabetic so can't really drink the full fat stuff except in an emergency. So from my point fo view sugar is worse than Aspartame. But I did used to drink it all the time.

Full fat Coke has sweeteners in it, too, iirc. Sweeteners are cheaper than real sugar, hence they are often used in non-diet foods.

I digress.

I'd suggest that seeing as cola (diet or non) is so damaging to your teeth, it's best avoided when pregnant, when your gnashers are suffering enough already.

I am suspicious of Aspartame and avoid it, although I'm not paranoid about it (nor am I pregnant for that matter).

BathesInAssesMilk · 17/11/2010 17:46

I take that back - Coke doesn't contain Aspartame. Lots of other soft drinks do however (own brand colas, for example).

Can I just ask, if you didn't have Google, would you be aware of any "dangers" or "risks" with things like diet Coke? The reason I'm asking is cos I've personally never ever been told to avoid anything except the usuals, pate, blue cheese etc.
Any research I've done shows studies on aspartame haven't concluded anything at all

BathesInAssesMilk · 18/11/2010 10:59

That's a good question, vmcd.

I'm pretty sure I'd heard of studies similar to the one bitingfairy linked to back when I was pregnant with ds, over 10 years ago. Although that was probably online, too. Confused
