Think baby is back to back - what can I do?

Im 33 weeks and up to now, baby's back was lying down left side, head down. This was confirmed at a scan on Friday which was great.
Yesterday however, I was slumped in an uncomfortable seat and I felt a huge movement. Now I can't feel anything hard to the front apart from the odd foot or hand!
The back has disappeared altogether.
Im so stressed because I have my heart set on a natural birth this time (VBAC). Have been doing hypnobirthing classes as have been told with previous complications and section, Id be advised not to have a third if this is another section.
HELP. Is there anything I can do? There's plenty of advice for breach but not heard of positions to help this.

I am almost 36 weeks and was told baby was back to back a few weeks ago. I have been told to lie/sleep on my left side and there are some exercises which are meant to be helpful (involving a birthing ball) which I unfortunately can't do this time because of severe SPD. I'll see if I can find a link though.

My dd was also back to back (I specialise in awkward babies ), but I gave birth naturally without any issues (she turned during first stage)

suggestions here

Thank you so much Tillyscoutsmum, Ive had a quick look and that is fab info.
I will have a good look when my 2 yr old DS stops trying to take over the keyboard!
That also makes me feel better re your DD's birth.
Phew, thought Id be made to have a c section if it was back to back, panic over!

I can't get tilly's link to open and get error messages. Please would someone type in the URL.

Both my boys were back to back.
I was told not to slouch, spend as much time leaning forward as I can. (MW even suggested scrubbing skirtingboards might help gravity swing them around - needless to say I just laughed).
I'm hoping DC3 will be less awkward.

bigpreggybelly I had same problem. Click 'home page' bit and it comes up.

sockmonkey how were your births - natural?

Cool - got it!

DS1 was induced, had problems as it turned out he had the cord wrapped around his neck, so needed forceps
DS2 was pretty plain sailing, a lot of pain in back during labour, but no stitches needed.

poguemahone · 16/11/2009 20:07

I second the skirting boards position.

DD moved back to back right at the end of my pregnancy (having been nicely positioned for the weeks leading up). Yoga teacher (who was also a mw) had told me to get on hands and knees if that happened and gravity would help swing the heavier back round to the front. It worked! (Maybe DD would have moved anyway?)

both my boys were posterior. DS1 was born face up after a long labour. Determined not to go through that again I did all I could to turn ds2. I would drape myself on a birthing ball - this encourages the baby to move around. DS2 kept moving into the correct position and then moving bac again. Evntually, whilst in labout he moved correctly and stayed there. The birth was a breeze compared to the first time

antenatal yoga might help or the best thing is crawling apparently.

stephie101 · 17/11/2009 08:27

Both my ds and dd were back to back, and face up, I didnt realise there was anything you could do to change that, they are now 10 and 13, i can remember the labour being bloody painful, and I have some nerve damage, but had them both naturally, with no intervention.

exexpat · 17/11/2009 08:39

Both my DCs also back to back - tried all the tips and exercises I could find in late pregnancy, but they both stayed that way and were born face-up. Longish labours (24hrs for DC1, 10hrs for DC2), large babies (9lbs+) but both born naturally with no pain relief (country I was living in doesn't even believe in gas and air...). Not something to panic about, I think.

Thats all good news. Thanks everyone. x

DD was back to back too. I spent most of labour on all fours (which MW had recommended) or standing up and eventually she swung round and I ended up with a water birth.

Good luck!

alana39 · 18/11/2009 13:06

Kneeling leaning against birthing ball.

That said DC3 was anterior all the way through this time, including when I had a sweep 2 days before delivering, and he still managed to turn to being back to back just as I went into labour. He came out that way in the quickest 2nd stage I've had (30 minutes) so it isn't necessarily a terrible thing as exexpat said.
