Hi
Went to see consultant today at Ante-natal clinc.

I've been unwell with a chest infection, have had antibiotics which didn't work so I've been given an inhaler to help me breathe.
The doctor asked me whilst palpating my stomach about the inhaler and then said' That will stop you going into labour'. I'm 31 weeks. I assumed he meant early labour.
I've never taken an inhaler before and am a bit worried about using it.
Does anyone have any advice or know what he means? Stupidly I didn't question him but now I think about it I realise I prob should.
He also wrote on my notes that I am now 3/5 engaged. Isn't this a bit early?? He didn't actually mention this to me just wrote on my notes after a lot of prodding etc.

I suppose I am a bit worried as first time pregnancy, and have been pretty unwell for the past few weeks.

Any advice?
Thanks

Hi Thingiebob, sorry to hear you've got a chest infection. Which inhaler have you been given, and how often do you feel the need to use it? I'm asthmatic and have used both my inhalers (blue and brown) as necessary during my pregnancy (I'm 36 weeks). Normal inhaler use certainly shouldn't bring on early labour!

If it's your 1st baby, I think it's quite common for them to engage earlier than later, as there's less room than when you're onto subsequent ones, so don't worry about that.

Anyhow, if you're still worried, phone your doctor or your midwife and get them to explain again.

The drug in the blue inhaler is sometimes aLSO USED IN A DRIP iirc TO STOP EARLY LABOURS. nOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR CHEST INFECTION AND HE WAS PROBABLY THINKING OUT LOUD. oops caps

The engaged thing is fine, doesn't mean you are about to pop

Hope you are feeling better soon

I do not know about the inhaler element, but 3/5 engaged is not unusual at your stage. The baby can firstly stay that way for ages, s/he is not fully engaged, but part engaged, and secondly, can pop back out again! Not so common in first pgs, but does still happen! And in second pgs, like mine currently, varies between being engaged and not engaged at a whim! I was 3/5 at 36 wks, and not at all at 38!
