First NCT session, what is covered?

I have had a nasty virus for the last week and chest infection along with a cough. Although I'm getting better I feel pretty rough so my DH and I decided that it would be wise to stay away from my first NCT class this evening.

I'm pretty irritated at missing it and feel that now we will be on the backfoot at the next session.

Anyone know what they cover in the first session? Do I need to 'catch up' in anyway?

TIA

Think it depends on the instructor but at mine it was introducing ourselves and hospital/birth bag. My instructor sends out handouts after the session so maybe yours will too. Hope you feel better soon.

All NCT teachers run their courses as they want - there isn;t a standardised programme, so the only person who knows what will be in your first week is your teacher.

As others have said, each course is probably run a bit differently to the next. Your teacher will be able to let you know what you covered and will probably have some kind of handout for you anyway.

In case it helps, I had my first class on Tuesday night. We split into mums and dads and each drew up an agenda of what we wanted covered during the course - questions particular to each person ranging from labour positions to how soon can you take your baby out and about, to when should you put their name down for a nursery place!

We also covered the basic changes in a pregnant woman and the guys had to put on a heavy rucksack on their fronts to feel how it feels for us!

The rest was general chat and getting to know each other, and we all got given a booklet with lots of useful guides in it.

Hope you are feeling better now.

We did exactly what Orange did at mine too. They are very good, I'm nearly at the end of my course.

i'm missing my second class due to a weekend away booked a whole year ago, so no changing that! I'm really worried that everyone will make friends that second week and i'll be left out of the group! But that's probably just me being paranoid. Maybe the best thing for both of us to do is arrange to have a cup of coffee with one of the other mums the week after - then she can fill us in on what we missed and do some getting to know you bonding!

You introduce each other, alcoholics anonymous style.

Then the teacher asks you what you want to cover in the course (this list is then ignored)

Then she gives some wafty information about home births and options. This usually involves spreading pictures over the carpet.

Lots of talk about 'feelings'. Then the men get sent into another room to breastfeed dolls.

Don't worry, the later sessions are much more useful. You won't be missing much.

we did the introducing thing, talked about what we wanted from the course and then went on to discuss what happens in a 'normal' labour and delivery, including physiological changes in the body during labour etc....sounds from the above like it is a bit different depending on where you go.
