Hi,

After much deliberating, discussion, research and sleepless nights I decided to get the Swine Flu Vaccine . .the decision was made jointly by myself and my partner although at the time I still had a niggling doubt in the back of my head about whether or not I was doing the right thing.

I thought after having the vaccine I would be able to forget about it but I had the Vaccine 3 days ago now and I ve spent the last 3 days tormenting myself that Ive just seriously damaged my unborn baby (am 35 weeks). I keep reading all the horror stories now and think, what if ive just given my baby autism or ive seriously affected it in some way . . ive convinced myself the baby is moving less often and am basically driving myself mad!!

Am looking from reassurance from other mums to be who had the vaccine that Ive done the right thing coz Im really upset and totally regretting what ive done!

I had mine this morning. I feel less worried now.

Freyjaz · 14/11/2009 14:36

There was a paper published saying that 6 women would have a spontaneous obortion after having the swine flu jab...but u cant believe what u read.....
Also in someways i agree with what RnB has said because the vaccine is still very very experimental. They have brought it out because they think there will b a high strain of it in the winter months.
but as u(chubby) are so near the end i wouldnt worry about it.

Personal opinion is medication is never good during pregnancy.especially with something that alot of medical professionals really are not sure about..

I am 29 weeks and i will not b having the swine flu jab but that is my choice and its only the premisies i dont want to take the chance and i have already had swine flu.

i also think if i wasnt pregnant they wouldnt b offering it to me.

Dont worry about what u hve done too much(sorry if this sounds mean)but u cant undo what u have done so just try to relax and enjoy the rest of ur pregnancy.

mistletoekisses · 14/11/2009 15:07

mistletoekisses hits floor in disbelief at previous post.

I echo what previous posters have said, this is a thread where someone has asked for support over a decision they have made. Unless you are willing to offer that support, please don't post on this thread!!

I am in utter utter disbelief!

mosschops30 · 14/11/2009 15:27

freyjaz your post is worse than useless.

Please post a link to this 'paper' so we can read and comment accordingly.

Agree with mistletoe, your post contains no reassurance for the OP. And plenty of women HAVE to take medication or undergo procedures whilst pg, its not 'that' unusual

nickytwotimes · 14/11/2009 15:34

Well, in response to the original op, I am pregnant and had it last week and thank God, becasue dh has just been diagnosed with it and tbh, I have really bad hyperemisis and had I got flu would probably have been in intensive care or dead.

It contains a tenth of the usual strength of seasonal flu vaccine, has taken the same time to produce and there has NEVER been any issue with pg women having the flu vaccine (which is routine in the US).

Frey is speaking out her arse. Do not listen to the advice of someone who cannot be bothered to type the word 'you'. Jesus.

maybebaby23 · 14/11/2009 18:10

Nicky im glad you managed to get the vaccine before DH got ill with it!! Scary. My surgery STILL hasn't got any vaccines (worried emoticon)

I was about to post the same about frey's post, why why why why why do people post rubbish to scare someone who has started the thread to get some support??

I hope you feel a little better OP? I will feel relieved when i am finally given the vaccine. Hope you feel it too x

jardins · 14/11/2009 18:10

Freyjaz how does it make you feel to know you have unnecessarily worried another pregnant woman? I'm just curious as well as gobsmacked.

babyboom1979 · 14/11/2009 19:22

"sorry if this sounds mean"

freyjaz

You don't sound sorry at all and you sound more than just mean. You should be ashamed of yourself for posting something which may have stressed and worried another pregant woman unnecessarily.

OP: I hope you are feeling better, and like maybebaby, I can't wait to have mine done.

I wish you the very best in the rest of your pregnancy.....

saltyseadog · 14/11/2009 19:48

OP - I'm having my jab on Monday. I can't say I'm entirely comfortable about it but I am also scared stiff of getting swine flu and the potential damage that that could do to me and my baby.

As for freyjaz - I wouldn't listen too much to the medical advice of someone who types text speak on here .

Chin up

chubbychipmonk · 15/11/2009 07:47

To all those who have posted well thought out responses and support . . thank you so much. After reading all your replies I am feeling a lot calmer and happier in the knowledge that whats done is done, myself and baby are protected and there's little I can do now to change it. To those who are in the same position as me or are about to get vaccine then I'm thinking of you . .

And to those who just completely ignored the purpose of my original post and went on to spout out their opinion causing me and others even more worry, then excuse the foul language . . but piss off and post somewhere else!!!

At what point someone thought that posting

. . . '6 women would have a spontaneous abortion after having swine flu vaccine' . .

on a post where someone has just had the vaccince and is looking for support, I dont know. Don't know what planet you're on FREYJAZ but in future think before you open your mouth. You clearly have no idea what you're talking about either . .

'I also think if I wasn't pregnant they wouldn't offer it to me' . . .

Well no they probably wouldn't, the whole point is that its dangerous for pregnant women to catch Swine flu and that's why we are in the priority group to get vaccinated!!
I hope to God you're not posting on any other threads . .if you are I strongly advise you get your facts straight first before scaring any other pregnant women out there looking for support.

I haven't had the jab because I don't leave the house enough..what with living in the middle of nowehere and belly to big to drive

chocoholic16 · 15/11/2009 19:25

Hi Chubby ,

I had pandemrix last Monday and felt much like you did however I then think what if I had caught the sf and the worst happened? No one knows who will be the unlucky ones and with a DD aged 5 it really was a risk I couldn't take. There is currently nothing to suggest that the sf jab causes harm to the baby and I'd much rather be alive and deal with any unlikely side effects found in the future than the alternative.

I can still feel my baby moving and feel confident now that I have done the right thing. At the end of the day we have acted on the advice of the WHO and people who are much more educated in vaccines than we are. I do not feel I have let my baby down and tend to take things posted on the internet with a pinch of salt. there will always be scare mongerers out there and at the end of the day you have to do what is right for you. No one can say I've made this decision blindly and to be honest if you looked into any vaccination you probably would never have any done! Like someone else has posted...look at the side effects of paracetamol!

We're only looking into this so much because it's a new vaccination BUT remember that all the ingredients are known and have been used before with no known risks posed to pregnant women. In a leaflet from the Department of Health it states that sone women enrolled as part of the vaccine safety trial for the H5N1 vaccine (bird flu?) which uses the same adjuvent were currently pregnant but did not yet know this and they were closely followed through their pregnancy and birth and THERE IS NO EVIDENCE OF ANY RISKS TO THE MOTHER OR FOETUS due to the vaccine.

I know it's easy to say but try to relax - in all honesty all the stressing we've been doing is probably more harmful to our babies than the dreaded sf jab! In a few years time we'll look back at this and think what were we all worried about :-)

rostbeef · 16/11/2009 13:18

I am booked in to have mine on Wednesday - and I am counting down the days. I am 32 weeks. A family friend is a high level obstetrician and he called me especially to urge me to have the vaccine - he recommended doing so in no uncertain terms. Please don't worry anymore - I think you have done exactly the right thing for you and your baby and I will be following your lead as soon as possible!

PanicMode · 16/11/2009 14:55

I have just booked to have mine and so clicked on here looking for reassurance and am amazed by some of the less than helpful comments!!

I have agonised over it Chubby, as I'm sure you did too, but with a medic in the family and several medics as friends, all of whom have looked at it and advised me to have it, I decided to go for it. I am sure that for me, the benefits outweigh the risks. I have three other children to think about, have a hole in my heart and travel into London 3 days a week so feel that having the jab is more sensible than getting the flu. I'm 16 weeks pg and understand that all of the principal reflexes etc are fully formed by now - which is why I wanted to wait until my second trimester.

I am sure that you have made the right decision for you - try not to worry (easy to say, hard to do!), but worrying about it won't help you enjoy the rest of your pregnancy

Flowerface · 16/11/2009 15:27

I had the jab this morning.

A GP friend told me that medications aren't tested on pregnant women for ethical reasons (I suppose this is why everything in the world says 'consult your doctor or pharmacist if pregnant' even if it is clearly safe). So there is nothing particularly sinister or worrying about that.

I agonised, but now feel much better and as though I've made the right decision. Obviously it's down to the individual, but personally I think that making comments about how vaccines are the root of all evil and what about Thalidomide, etc etc is extremely unhelpful (as well as being irrelevant) in this context.

HelsCarminia · 16/11/2009 16:00

I am a GP and very early in pregnancy and I had mine on Thursday. We have debated the pros and cons of swine flu vaccine endlessly at work. Overall, we have been pretty convinced that if anyone is to have it, it should be pregnant women due to risks of SF in pregnancy, as you all know..
Did have some pregnant women admitted to hospital with SF in July...
I think, as best as we can ever know, it's safe. Alas, with many things in medicine, including other decisions made throughout pregnancy and labour, it is always a matter of weighing up risks/benefits to the best of your ability..
So, I've done it (and of course am likely to be exposed at work..so perhaps easier decision for me)
By the way- your arm will hurt for 3 days and I felt pretty off colour for first 2 days afterwards - just so you know!

Miia · 16/11/2009 16:36

Thought I'd mention this... back home where swine flu is currently rampant women are having to go to and give birth by themselves, husbands and visitors are not allowed in the hospital. At this point I am feeling very relieved a) I am here and b) I have had the vaccine.

Serennos · 16/11/2009 16:56

I am 27 weeks and had my vaccination last week. I agonised for ages over whether to have it or not, but I made what I feel was the best decision I could with the best information I had at the time.

I went out of my way to find out about the pros and cons - and there is nothing more or better that we can do. I believed that the risk to my baby from catching flu is greater than the risk from the jab - and I still do.

We have done the best we can and no more can be expected of us

ClaireDB · 16/11/2009 17:39

I had it a few days ago. There's nothing in it which they wouldn't give to pregnant women in other situations. You'll be fine.

ClaireDB · 16/11/2009 17:41

Oh, and don't read the papers! Remember the storm in a fictional tea pot with MMR.

The jab will also protect your baby from swine flu once he/she is born

LittleRosebud · 17/11/2009 10:49

Hi there, I've had my jab too. I'm new to Mumsnet and am shocked at some of the rude, unsupportive and ignorant comments posted! I hope you've found some of the responses useful, Chubby. Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy!
