On a scale of 1 to 10 how painful is a sweep

I've been offered a sweep which I've never had before. My mother thinks its awful but she can also be a drama queen... So if 1 = a cervical smear, 5 = an Epidural and 10 = labour where would you put a sweep?

!st time was fine about 1-2
2nd time more like 5-6

I read the title before reading the responses and thought "2" - clearly I'm Mrs. Average

There was no pain at all, just discomfort.
It helped get things going - sweep on Fri afternoon, a few twinges on Fri night/Sat, sex on Sat afternoon and in labour by the evening, so I think the sweep helped but the sex got things properly moving!

1-2.
More uncomfortable than painful.
I had one on my due date - nothing.
I had a 2nd a week later - a week overdue.
Sweep was done at 10am. Contractions started at 4pm. DS2 arrived at 19.41.
Do it
Good luck with it all

Mine was done by a consultant and I would still rate it as a 6 or 7. I screamed

Iamamumma · 12/11/2009 08:01

I had one and it wasn't painful at all - more weird!

comewhinewithme · 12/11/2009 08:13

6 It felt like my skin was getting ripped but it was over in seconds and started labour.

Tabbykat · 12/11/2009 08:22

Had two last time and would say about a 2 - more uncomfy than v painfully, just like a very thorough smear. Have one booked for this afternoon as have gone 5 days over with this PG - definitely worth a go to avoid induction IMHO.

BeckyBendyLegs · 12/11/2009 08:25

I'd say 2. If you've ever had an internal ultrasound it is just like that but with a finger rather than a probe. I have a really, really low pain threshold as well and do not like anyone going into my lady parts unless absolutely necessary!

fifitot · 12/11/2009 08:30

Bit painful but not as bad as the doc breaking your waters with a crochet hook! Well that's what it looked like anyway! Eeeeeeeeeeeek!

Wills · 12/11/2009 13:00

OK, have had it! Would say 1 to 2. Was told that I'm ready to have my waters broken and have been given the weekend to "get going" but if there's no action by monday he'll break my waters for me.

mine was baout a 6 I think, but MW couldn't do it very well as DS's head in the way. I didn't scream but it made me sweat and go grey!

funtimewincies · 12/11/2009 14:42

Agree with those who say about a 2 or 3, slightly more uncomfortable than a smear and not even registering on a scale that includes the baby crowning !

funtimewincies · 12/11/2009 14:43

Sorry, I realised after I pressed 'post message' that I could have worded that better !

It'll be fine, have a .

fanjolina · 12/11/2009 15:41

1 or 2

Less if you do it yourself so can anticipate the discomfort better

boybay · 12/11/2009 15:42

is just a little uncomfortable . I would say 2

TheMightyToosh · 12/11/2009 15:47

Mine was pretty painful! Not on a par with full labour, but I think that's just because it was over in a flash. But it was one painful flash, I can tell you, about 4.5/10, and the woman opposite me asked for gas with hers!

Then I was induced with the drip and that was nothing like as bad as I had read it might be....

You never can tell!
