Is there anything I can use from the canteen at work to get rid of this horrendous heartburn?

Irritatingly enough I have tons of Rennies at home, but I've forgotten them today. I'm at work, can't leave. We don't have any shops in our building, so I'm going to have to rely on things I can find in the staff canteen. How on earth can I tackle this heartburn? Please don't say milk, I may well barf!

Oh and a banana hasn't help, neither has bread.

Cheese? Is that any good?

How about 10 hour old pizza, there's plenty of that in there

Black pepper's supposed to be good for reducing acid - worth a try? Cheese might be a bit acid. Is there anything green you can eat?

HeadFairy · 09/11/2009 19:12

Green? in our canteen? Do packets of Walkers salt and vinegar crisps count

They do have some pre packaged salads... would that help?

I think the only black pepper they have is in those little packets. Do I just chuck one back?

Nothing fatty... maybe milkshake? If you don't like milk

pointydogg · 09/11/2009 19:15

ypghurt?

Thingiebob · 09/11/2009 19:23

Banana
Or Apple

HeadFairy · 09/11/2009 19:23

They can't do milkshakes up there... they can't do much beyond spoon out slop! I could try a yoghurt though... any top tips? Fruity? Plain (if they have it, that's a bit too exotic for the canteen!) reduced fat?

Are apples not too acidic thingiebob? The ones they have in there are so floury and old they probably won't have much fruit acid in them at all!

Are you getting the hint that our canteen is rubbish?

Peppermint tea/?

Ohwhatacrapmasfear · 09/11/2009 19:25

If i'm out of antacids I drink a glass of cold water. It isn't perfect but it seems to take the edge off a bit.

suiledonne · 09/11/2009 19:26

Any vending machines about? How about a nice bar of milk chocolate or a packet of mints?

PerArduaAdNauseum · 09/11/2009 19:30

How about mixing in the black pepper with some cottage cheese on a salad, if such a combination is possible?

If all else fails, do you have any good friends who could nip a packet of Rennies over to you?

HeadFairy · 09/11/2009 19:31

OOOH now chocolates I could do... I'm sure they have extra strong mints in there too. Would that really help?

Water hasn't helped, just drank a big bottle of it. I'm sure I've got the heartburn because I've been at my desk all day. It's never this bad when I'm on a day off!

Oh I see PerArdua... not sure they have cottage cheese, but I'll see if they've got something similar.

Sadly, I'm too far away from anyone to come out and give me some Rennies... ouch ouch ouch! I won't be forgetting them tomorrow!

I used to find hot chocolate helped if they do proper ones as i'm not highlights would have the same effect.

PerArduaAdNauseum · 09/11/2009 19:50

Mints could be good - good luck!

HeadFairy · 09/11/2009 19:53

Ok mints I'll definitely try... I'm working on a story about the Cadbury takeover so it feels kind of right to try the chocolate option too!

Oh god - heartburn is awful!!!!

Definitely try mints they help a bit with me. I may be wierd but bananas are one of the worst things I can eat when it comes to heartburn as I am in agony ten mins later. Not sure why?

PerArduaAdNauseum · 09/11/2009 20:16

Lots of sugar in bananas and sugar=acidity

Thingiebob · 09/11/2009 21:28

Bananas always help me.

Apples was a suggestion given to me by someone else.

Polo mints also work as a Rennie substitute as well as drinking plenty of water as it dilutes the acid.
