No bath in the house, only a shower?

Wasn't sure where to post this! Does anyone who already has children NOT have a bath in the house? We only have a shower, and I'm wondering how long i'm going to be able to bath DC (am 26 weeks) in the baby bath? And then what? Put it in the shower?

I realise most of the world don't have baths, and seem to manage, but how will it work in England??

We have a bath but have never used it with ds - he was in a baby bath until he could stand, then would stand with us in the shower.

Paperclipcollector · 07/11/2009 22:01

We only had a shower from when DS was born to he was 3. Bathed in in baby bath or kitchen sink, but as he got bigger and more water needed put the baby bath in the shower tray.
When he had his first proper bath we couldn't get him out of it - he thought it was a swimming pool

MumNWLondon · 07/11/2009 22:55

we have a bath but both my kids have been really happy to have showers in the gym from around 2 years.

sandcastles · 08/11/2009 00:00

We didn't have a bath & dd bathed in her baby bath until she was almost 3! She was (still is) a wee little thing, so no real issues re room!

On the odd occasion she would shower & loves them. We are now in a house with a bath so no longer an issue.

midnightsun · 08/11/2009 10:25

In Scandinavia many homes don't have baths they just have showers, they believe it's more hygenic that sitting around in increasingly dirty tepid water, kids have been known to wee in the bath water so they've got a point I suppose. Kids are just taken in the shower with parents as described previously here.

We have no bath, my 3 year old son still sits in a big baby bath but will happily shower at the swimming pool. Kids accept what they are offered and get used to. When people say you have to have a bath to wash a baby or small child, it's more about them and their own fixed ideas based on how they grew up, more than anything else.

Having said that I'm expecting another baby now and we have to have a bathroom replaced so I am using the chance to get a bath tub fitted. Mostly so I can bath two together.

woowa · 08/11/2009 17:19

Thanks all! Love the tubtrug idea the most I think as cheapest and pretty big I think. We have a house that comes with the job badietbuddy so can't move! And we have a wetroom, so space is unlimited (apart from storing it, I guess)

I always felt that way about baths, too, midnight sun. I tend to rinse DS off with some warm water from the tap before getting him out of the bath just to get those germs off. I know it sounds silly. I always feel the same about having a bath myself. That I need to shower afterward or else I'm not clean.

Knickers0nMaHead · 09/11/2009 09:11

we have just moved into a house with a wet room shower. Dd hates it! But i keep trying with her. I picked up a huge baby bath, m&p I think, in a charity shop for 6quid. Almost twice the size of a normal baby bath.

DJSEXEY · 09/11/2009 21:19

Hi, we don't have a bath either, my son is 1 and for the past few months we've been using a large round red tub that we used for soft toys we bought it for a few quid from Tesco. Our son loves it we fill it up in the bottom of the shower with bubbles and its just the right size for him, not ideal for the long term but it'll do til we can have a bath fitted (a long way away) x

CarGirl · 11/11/2009 19:50

The cheapest Bibabad is 145 euros delivered what is good about it is that it has a drainage hole and it's light and easy to store. I'm hoping my dds won't miss the bath but if they really really complain I guess we'll be getting one!

angfirsttimer · 12/11/2009 12:32

Thanks for this thread, I dont have a bath only a really tiny shower and my mother keeps telling me how important bath time is for kids - (cue guilty bad mother feelings already and only 24 weeks!. I feel a lot better about using a baby bath at first and starting the baby off in the shower early now, just hope I can fit in with baby!

Having said that I am now wondering how I am going to fit in the shower when heavily pregnant! If I drop the shampoo/soap I might get stuck!!!

CarGirl · 26/11/2009 17:53

Just reviving this for future searches.

DD2 who is a very tall 7.5 (but slim) came home from football covered in mud, we currently have no bathroom what so ever only downstairs WC she's just had a bath sitting in the old baby bath!

vixta77 · 29/11/2009 15:13

I was wondering the exact same thing! I only have a shower too, i dunno what i am gonna do. I am gonna have to fill the baby bath up with the shpower head and bath her that way till she is old enough to go in the shower!

Bucharest · 29/11/2009 15:19

We only have a shower here in Italy. Dd bathed in baby bath till she was almost 5! Now showers. (and looks forward to going to Granny's at Christmas to slide up and down in her bath!)

vixta77 · 29/11/2009 15:21

awww bless her! i used to do that when i was little !!!

Bucharest · 30/11/2009 08:04

Another tip we used to help dd get used to the shower was to let her wear her swimming goggles so the water didn't go in her eyes (not only do we only have a shower, it's a great clonking non-adjustable one)

newmumto2 · 18/09/2012 10:49

I also have no bath, my first son used the baby bath till he was 2 1/2 years. He was a big boy too, 98cm at 2.5years. I used it on top of the changing table till he got bigger, then put it on the bottom of the shower, so splashes were contained. I had my second son and bathed them seperate at first, now he's older it was easier to bath together. I bought a 3 ring paddling pool from tesco ?3.99, it fits in nicely, squashes to the square shape, I put 4 foam play mats underneath so its softer to sit on. Works a treat, and my 10 month old and 2.5 year old fit in nicely with lots of room to play.

We have a bath in our house but there is only a shower in PIL holiday home, when we're there we use a big plastic storage box in the bottom of the shower as a makeshift bath. DS (17 months) really likes it as he can get in and out by himself, although ge does also generally just like sitting in boxes.

Also we just used the sink until he got too big.

furrygoldone · 18/09/2012 11:10

Damn didn't see the date!

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 18/09/2012 11:14

My ds started to jump out of bath in bottom of shower and poo on the floor! Luckily we have moved!

kirstyruss10 · 04/01/2015 03:39

My daughter has a 2 stage aqua one from mamas and papas she is 14 months and has loads of room I only have a shower but it's small can only fit a baby bath on its side in there so it was either the aqua bath or a swimming pool till she is older

Want2bSupermum · 04/01/2015 05:02

We use the folding bathtub when in Denmark. It doubles as a rocket ship during the day. DD is 3 and fits in it no problem. I had both DC in it last week but not enough water left!

mathanxiety · 04/01/2015 05:32

ooooooooold thread

applecore0317 · 04/01/2015 08:38

My friend used a large one of these when her little boy was a year plus, she had a bath but didn't want to waste water, and her little boy loved it, think they either come from ikea or the garden centre

No bath in the house, only a shower?
