Talk about every stage of pregnancy, from early symptoms to preparing for birth.

If you went off coffee during pregnancy, what on earth else did you drink in the meantime?

I used to be a biiig coffee drinker. I've been off it for at least a month, retch at the thought of it, and mainly been drinking hot vimto but christ I'm bored of it now, it's not the same!

I'm phobic of tea (except fruit teas which contain no actual tea) I've tried drinking cocoa but it's too stodgy to drink all the time.

What can I drink?? and will this go at some point in the pregnancy, or afterwards?

Hot ribena?

The only craving I ever had was Diet Coke - then I realised it was because I'd gone off tea and needed the caffeine. Is coke bad for the baby? Didn't hear that particular news story.

I used to drink tonic water as someone told me it stopped those awful leg cramps you get at night. It did seem to work and I really liked it too. Thought I'd keep on drinking it afterwards but nooooo

I went off coffee in the early stages but I love coffee so I used to make it with Instant coffee & hot milk rather than water in the morning and was able to stomach that - if that's not fancy enough you could try a latte?

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 22/10/2009 14:54

Balloonslayer, hot vimto is what I've been drinking, bit bored of it now though. Coke is bad for everyone (but tastes sooo good) but I meant you have to be careful of the caffeine in pregnancy too. There's less in coke than in coffee or tea, mind.

NancyBotwin (heyhey, a weeds reference! love that show) I'm afraid I can't stomach coffee at all, much less a milky one. I shudder at the thought.

Oh thanks for the tip about tonic water Balloonslayer. I had awful leg cramps last time and am waiting for them to kick in. Will stock up on loads of tonic water this time.

I drink plenty of ginger beer in the faint hope that will quell the nausea and crave lager. I allow myself a can on a Saturday night and think about it all week!

Difficult one. I usually drink tea but have totally gone off that and nothing else tastes good which makes it hard to stay hydrated. Have varied it with hot chocolate, coffee (decaff Clipper organic so at least it's decaffed without chemicals), cup-a-soup, grapefruit juice, lime cordial, iced water with a slice of lemon, and the occasional frappacino.

went off both tea and coffee....

drank hot water, without adding anything at all. delicious

Stormfly · 22/10/2009 21:23

Just tried the hot water - not bad actually, thanks for that.

No Caf which you can get from Holland and Barrett. Mind you I didn't go off coffee, just gave it up. No Caf isn't the same but much nicer than other alternatives.

In this pg (#2) I've found that I've actively craved decaf coffee, especially the milky stuff. But caffeinated coffee? I haven't touched that since I gave up caffeine when BF #1. It smells/tastes like poison to me.

I was also dairy-free for a while and found a really nice choco & cinnamon tea (was it by a brand called yogi or similar?) - it was one of the most satisfying hot drinks I could find that didn't require milk to give it a bit more body.

I quite like one quarter orange juice, three quarters hot water. Not too sweet.

Pepsi Max, and tonnes of it.

MadameDuBain · 23/10/2009 09:26

I'm so annoyed about not having coffee - I went off it at the start of pregnancy (first symptom), but last time round I felt better at 15 weeks and went back to one coffee a day. This time I'm still off it at 19 weeks - it disgusts me, but I miss it!

Anyway I have earl grey tea sometimes, but also tons of other stuff. I love posh fizzy drinks, have been spending a fortune on them. I drink:

Earl grey tea
Peppermint tea
Orangina
Ame, appletiser and similar stuff
San pellegrino limonata (posh lemonade)
Tonic water
Fruit juice, especially crave citrus
Becks Blue (alcohol free lager)
Milk
Hot chocolate (especially in cafes where I'd normally have coffee)

Chai, the spicy one although vanilla was quite tasty as well. Bought sachets but also made it fresh myself as well, totally yummy. Diet coke was also a firm favourite and water became a neccessity, also blackcurrant cordial and chocolate milk when the heartburn kicked in.

AnnieLobeseder · 24/10/2009 11:00

I lived on Rooibos Earl Grey.

purepurple · 24/10/2009 11:10

I went off coffee very quickly and I don't drink tea at all. I lived on hot chocolate. I had very bad sickness for 5 months and was loosing weight so the extra calories helped.
