Second Pregnancy

Hi
I found out last week that I am pregnant again. My son, Joe, will be three on Saturday, so I have done it before, but is it really different second time round? I'm not sure of my dates, and am waiting for an early dating scan, but I think I'm somewhere between 6 and 9 weeks. But my stomach is so bloated that I've had to start wearing maternity clothes already. Did this happen to anyone else? I even look a pregnant shape!!! Also a bit concerned that it could be twins, as there are twins in both mine and my Husband's families. Be grateful for any advice on how to cope with feeling so tired and life with a three year old!

hi BabsM, first of all, congratulations! It's welcome news I hope.
I'm in a similar position in that I have a 2.5 yr old son and am currently 14 wks with my second, so I can sympathise with how tired you are feeling. If it's any consolation, I'm beginning to feel so much better, still a bit tired, but if I get sufficient rest I feel great. I also seem to have put on weight a lot quicker this time. I've told friends and family but not work yet (I'm dreading that) but I think it's going to have to be soon.
I'm nervous about how this little one is going to change the dynamics of my family, my ds is so close to me I know he's going to be jealous, and while I'll try all the usual tricks when the baby comes, I feel bad that he's not going to have all my attention anymore.
When will you have your scan? Would twins be such a shock?

Congratulations BabsM999
It is VERY normal to look much bigger much faster teh 2nd time around and at 6 weeks.... I don't think that it's becasue it might be twins (if you think the size of the baby at this stage)... it's mainly your body has expanded once and unless you ahd amazing stomach tone before.... you're bound to look big quickly, I was wearing all my maternity clothes at 12 weeks!
The good news is that 2nd time labours are usually easier and so is BF... no idea if this is a concern to you.
Also contrary to common belief/fears you are very unlikely to ingnore Joe once baby is born... you are more likely to say to your DH in the evening "I hardly looked after baby, Joe kept me so busy!"
Kids have a way with things..... and it is the 2nd one that gets neglected

Congratulations Babs999 -
I bloated up straight away this time round - still can't believe that everyone hasn't guessed, even worse they think I've just let myself go. Good to hear your thoughts pupuce - had a rather drawn out labour first time round. Is your scan soo Babs999? I had one at 11 weeks to confirm dates etc. Good luck

My Dr has faxed a form for an early scan to the hospital, so I'm hoping to hear in the next couple of days. Glad to hear that my shape is not unusual. I was a bit shocked, although I was starting to wear maternity clothes with Joe by the 11th week. Twins wouldn't be so bad, it would just mean a bit of building work at home. I was more worried that Joe may have been a twin, what with everything being completely unknown, but this time I'm not worried. Joe has taken it really well. He seems to understand what is going on. I suppose it helps that his childminder has a 1 year old daughter, so he went through pregnancy with her. We told him that he could pick a name for the baby while I was pregnant. After persuading him that Bob The Builder wasn't really suitable (lol), he chose Sunny Baby. We are trying to get him as involved as possible, and will take him for the second scan, when he will be able to see more. Can't wait to see his face!

Congratulations BabsM999. You and I must be due around the same time (I'm 7 weeks). Fortunately, I'm NOT showing much yet, as we've not told anyone yet (for reasons I've gone into in another thread). I'd been on a diet (fortunately not a faddy one - just being sensible about what I was eating), so that might have helped.
I've finally made an appointment to see the doctor this Friday - maybe it'll seem more real then.
Good luck with your scan - and I'll keep fingers crossed for you about the twins!

Hi BabsM999. Congratulations to you.
I am also pregnant with my second, and I have a 3yr old daughter. I'm a few weeks ahead of you though at 16 weeks. It's so exhausting isn't it looking after the 3 yr old and wanting to sleep so badly! My daughter does go to nursery most days while I work from home, and I try to put my feet up for a while each lunch time. I also try and get my partner to take her out, even just to supermarket for an hour or so now and again, so I can have a lie in/peace and quiet reading etc.
We are getting our daughter as involved as possible too, she wants to look at pictures of how babies grow, and she talks loudly to my tummy sometimes!
I won't be taking her to my 20 week scan though, and my hospital for this pregnancy actually advise against taking children to scans in their ultrasound leaflet. I really don't want to put you off, but felt I wanted to mention my own experience the 1st time I was pregnant 4 years ago. We took my (then 9yrs old) step-daughter with us to the 20week scan assuming it would be a wonderful bonding experience for her to see the new baby etc. However a major heart defect was spotted and it turned into the biggest nightmare of my life ending a few days later with a termination (going through full labour) at just over 20weeks. My st-daughter obviously witnessed all the early grief and shock, something which was very inappropriate for a child to see I think. She had gone home to her mum's by the time I had to go into hospital. Obviously this was an extremely rare thing to happen, and I guess it has made me pretty fearful of scans generally. I'm sorry if I was negative, but just wanted you to know that you might want to have someone with your son outside the room, and then perhaps invite him in when you know all is ok? Good luck and let us know if you have twins on the way!!
