Verity - my DH was not allowed in the room as it was a GA which was really sad. I couldnt see DS for 24hrs because we were both quite poorly and having transfusions. Me in HDU and he in SCBU with dh trotting between the two of us. The nurses took a photo and that was how i met my son! The tubey photo through the plastic cot with holes in and he had a little white hat on.

But like you, all is well.

mel1981 · 13/10/2009 21:59

I had no pain at all.
Maybe speak to your midwife or labour ward....better to be safe than sorry.

madmissy · 13/10/2009 22:00

see you nx tues that must have been scary for you

mad - as far as i remember there was no pain, just the bleed which is why it seems to be so shocking as no warning signs.

Mention the pain to your m/wife or whomever when you call in about the scan.

The danger with the bleeding comes from the fact that we are contracting all the way through pregnancy and it pulls on the placenta as everything gets bigger. When the braxtons get stronger in later preg that is when the higher chances of bleed. This is so I am told. I am no expert so always seek more advice from professionals

SazZaVoom · 13/10/2009 22:09

I was told it happens as the uterus stretches it concertina's up at the top and 'pulls apart' at the bottom and that is where you get 'pinging' of blood vessels. That may be a load of idle gossip though

I would definitely mention the pain to the MW as PP is usually associated with sudden, painless bleeds. As i said i had discharge at 29 weeks for about 5 days which was a precursor to my bleed 2 weeks later

Try and write a list of Q's before speaking to the MW/Consultant, including birth plan/timings etc as they may not want you to go full term. Hope you get all the answers you want

Mel - that is awful they missed it so many times

madmissy · 14/10/2009 08:20

here this is the scan pic from last night
i put cervix on lol and well you can see the placenta. ds isn't visible in the scan hes laying on top of the placenta

really appreciate you answering my Q's! TBH i am a bit shocked as really wasn't expecting anything

mel1981 · 14/10/2009 11:00

Saz -I know, but in their defence I was scanned by a few different people and they all missed it. But it was very scary afterwards realising the problems that I could of faced. Like when DH phone for ambulance they told him to prepare to give birth there and then...but there was no way I would of been able too
Mad - defenately speak to your midwife and write down all your q's before you go.
I wasnt worried when they mentioned at 20wk scan as I had is with pg no 3- how wrong was I?
I'd say plan an emergency plan too JUST INCASE you do have a bleed (-I hope to god you dont, but just to be sure) But for example if you have kids at home who can get there ASAP to look after them? have a bag packed if you dont already. 2nd time it happened to me I was home alone with 2 kids & I was panicking as we didnt plan out what to do if anything went wrong!!
I dont mean to worry you but for me I wish I was more prepared.

kitstwins · 14/10/2009 12:22

My private 20 week scan picked up a "low lying" placenta which I then mentioned at my hospital '20 week scan' at 22 weeks. The sonographer had a good look and eventually mumbled "oh yes, it's low" and flagged it on my notes. I didn't get any grade or any explanation and was sent home. I then had a big bleed at 23 weeks which triggered contractions and early labour (I was pregnant with twins so not the most straightforward of pregnancies) which they blocked with drugs after a late night dash to the labour ward. I then had further bleeds at 25 weeks (with another blocked labour) at 26 weeks and at 28 weeks (another blocked labour). At 30 weeks I had another whopper bleed and a slight water leak (woke up dreaming that my waters had gone) and then was in hospital until I delivered by emergency section at 35 weeks. Both babies born healthy and are now three years old!

I think my bleeding was quite extreme. Further scans revealed that it was partially covering my cervix and I was warned that it was unlikely to move as both placentas were on my posterior wall and the fact that there were two of them meant space was at a premium. I had constant braxton hicks if I walked any faster than a crawl and I do wonder if this irritated the cervix which in turn triggered a bleed. I got no warnings when I was about to bleed - literally nothing to imply that it was going to happen. The big ones happened at night, which was very scary and distressing even though I was prepared for it to happen. Smaller bleeds happened during the day but they were less frequent.

If you haven't bled yet then that's a really, really good sign. I also have a friend who was pregnant with twins the same time as me and had total, Grade 4 praevia i.e. entirely covering her cervix. She was told she had to have a caesarean at 37 weeks and was warned that a bleed was a certainty, but unlike me didn't bleed at all and had a safe and uneventful delivery. I'd say the fact that you haven't bled yet is a really good sign.

As security, before I went to hospital I always had a small 'bleed bag' packed. I had a nightgown, small bag of toiletries, book, pen, cardigan, flip flops. The basics to get me through a couple of night's stay in hospital if needs be. I also always carried my hospital notes with me and had the number of my labour ward punched into my mobile in case I needed to call them.

Praevia is crap but you'll be in really safe hands and the fact that you haven't bled is a really good sign that things are stable.

madmissy · 14/10/2009 13:26

for you too kits.
well rang about the pain etc and had to bloomin go in but was let me home
basically goto take it easy and any sign of increased discomfort or slightest bleed have to go in asap
still booked for consultant and scan on monday so will find out more then

but yes from reading of others lucky that i have had no bleeding as of yet

OP posts:
SazZaVoom · 14/10/2009 14:20

I do think my first bleed was triggered by a hot bath (i was not told to avoid them ) so i would steer clear of relaxing that way

I was told with mine (after the 1st bleed) it was a case of 'when' not 'if' the next one came. However as Kits says i am sure there are a fair few people who don't have any bleeds but a planned CS and also some who don't know they have it until delivery. At least you are 'in the system' now and i found my care absolutely faultless once it had been properly identified as PP

Hope you are all ok until monday and let us know how you get on

madmissy · 14/10/2009 19:32

yes so far i have one story of no bleeding so fingers crossed!

will def get plan in place for care for girls should it happen and have a bag on stand by

i love my hot baths lol but don't have them any where near as hot when i am pg scared of cooking bubs!

what should i expect on monday? they are scanning again but whats the chat like? do they plan c sec from start when its covering?

OP posts:
mel1981 · 14/10/2009 21:37

I was just constantly told we'll wait and see if it moves....lot of good that did. But I wasnt pushy in the slightest, I just assumed they knew what the were doing So maybe that would be my tip. Not so much to be pushy but try and get clear answers where you can.
My friend had a grade 3 too and no bleeding until the day before her booked CS at 37wks (only slight though)

madmissy · 14/10/2009 21:39

thats what i thought but are the chances of it moving as grade 3-4 very slim in 3rd tri?

OP posts:
magnolia74 · 14/10/2009 21:41

I had grade 4 with ds1 now nearly 3. I had no bleeding at all. I was given a c section at 37 weeks but only because of a history of early fast labours.
No problems at all

mel1981 · 14/10/2009 21:44

Sorry not sure TBH mad definately worth asking. I think I was told they can move up til about 34 weeks but dont quote me on that

madmissy · 14/10/2009 21:48

magnolia thats good to know my last labour was 3 hours my first was 24 lol big difference

mel i will add to the list lol i think chances are very slim but poss? when actually covered

OP posts:
madmissy · 18/10/2009 09:11

Check at hospital tomorrow. Scared lol. Whats chances of it moving?

OP posts:
madmissy · 18/10/2009 20:02

Also when would a c sec likely to be if I needed one?

OP posts:
mel1981 · 18/10/2009 22:45

like you say I think the chances of it moving are slim. And they might do a c sestion as early as 37 weeks but possibly 38 weeks. Dont quote me on that tho.
Good luck for tomorrow hope all goes well. x

magnolia74 · 18/10/2009 22:55

Usually 38 weeks sometimes as late as 39.I insisted on 37 due to previous premature labours.
Good luck xx

madmissy · 19/10/2009 09:07

had a dream last night that it was all a wind up lol
so now i half convince myself that its actually something else in way
cant believe how nervous i am tbh over a scan and consultant appt.

i have read so many differences of when they do c secs but 37 seems average... if you make it that far

i think because i have not bled i don't believe that i have a problem does that make sense?

sorry to whittle on... was sooo nervous about getting closer to birth as it is without any added problems that i am now getting over anxious i think?

i know its just my depression and anxiety flaring thats all..... so i am in control its just scary stuff for me

Hi, I was told I had placenta previa at 28 week scan. Placenta was completely covering cervix. Spent next few months in utter panic, phoned all nearby neighbours and friends to sort out cover for kids/lifts to hopsital if any bleeding. Was very cross because at 20 week scan they'd said it was just a bit low - had said nothing about avoiding sex etc.

Midwife said it would not move, consultant said it would not move. 34 week scan it had moved!! I did feel it was odd that I hadn't had a single spot of bleeding.

Several friends had the same thing. Not saying that you should assume it's going to move - but please don't get yourself into the state I did about it all!
