Is it normal to be this thirsty in pregnancy?

I am drinking so much. I'm 35+4 weeks pg. This morning I've had 4 pints of squash, one can of diet coke and a glass of juice. I'm drinking way more than I do normally. Other than that I am fine, is this normal/ok?

Have you seen the midwife recently and had your urine tested?

Drinking a lot / feeling v thirsty is a symptom of diabetes, or gestational diabetes.

meep · 07/10/2009 14:18

I was thirsty ALL the time in both my pregnancies - took all my self control to limit my intake in teh evenings (in order to curb toilet trips!). I didn't have diabetes - but I would mention it to your mw just in case.

flowerybeanbag · 07/10/2009 14:20

I am off to the midwife this afternoon as it happens, so will ask. Last had my urine done 2 weeks ago, no problems then.

I have tried limiting intake a bit meep, for the same reason but if I'm thirsty and I don't drink I develop a headache fairly sharpish, so I've given that idea up!

I was very thirsty too, but yes agree with others its just as well to get checked out good luck!

I know some people crunch icecubes in the evening - quenches thirst but not so much liquid!

I was so dedicated in avoiding liquid in the evenings that I had mastered only one toilet trip between the hours of 10pm and 6am - was ridiculously proud of myself! But as soon as I stood up and gravity took hold, it was a mad dash to the loo every morning !

Hope it is all okay.

So there's no glucose in my urine but the midwife was concerned as it's a lot I'm drinking, so now I have to go to the hospital in a couple of weeks for a glucose thingummy test, after fasting overnight and having no breakfast and nothing to drink until 9am.

Oh well, better safe than sorry I guess.

booooooooo but yeah best to get checked, hope it all turs out to be nothing

brightonbleach · 07/10/2009 18:24

best to get checked out theres a gestational diabetes thread on here under pregnancy if you find you have anything to worry about after testing do come and ask those of us who are coping with GD anything you like that might help! (Obviously fingers crossed that you're just fine though)

flowerybeanbag · 07/10/2009 19:52

thanks geraldine

that's very kind brighton, I may well be along to find the gd thread if there's anything wrong, hopefully not, but nice to know it's there if I need it

you can drink water before your test!!!

flowerybeanbag · 08/10/2009 09:23

Thanks Biscuitstuffer yes to be fair the midwife told me after speaking to the blood test people that if I was dying of thirst I could have half a glass of water.

I have medication to take in the morning anyway so I will certainly be doing that.

You are 35+4 now and they are waiting 2 weeks to do this test Surely if there is a problem they should be looking at this now rather than when the baby is more or less about to be delivered?!

Hope it is all ok for you - personally I would just push to get this test done sooner rather than later just in case.

TOK · 08/10/2009 16:22

I had same unquenchable thirst that you have described at around the same time flowerybeanbag. I also had the glucose tolerance test done and it came back negative, so don't get too stressed about it! xxx

herethereandeverywhere · 08/10/2009 18:18

I'm always thirsty and drinking far more than my non-pregnant self (I'm currently 40+6 BTW). I'd say I drink at least 3x my usual fluid intake. All the GD tests have come back -ve so hopefully yours will too

flowerybeanbag · 08/10/2009 20:05

thanks all Nice to hear other people have experienced similar! I agree it is rubbish that I won't have the test for another 2 weeks, by which time the baby will be virtually here anyway. Under normal circumstances I'd be kicking up a fuss, if I thought there was anything wrong or was feeling not right in any way.

But I am feeling very well indeed really, my urine showed nothing at all, my blood pressure is fine, so I'm less inclined to make a fuss than I might otherwise be.

flowery that happened me this January. I drank and drank (already had had tests for G.D which came back fine). Me and ds were just fine and you and little one will be too. Have you a shortlist of names ready for next month?

flowerybeanbag · 08/10/2009 21:38

thanks sobloodystupid, I'm sure we'll be right as rain - I certainly feel pretty good and baby is making himself well and truly known kicking away!

We do have a shortlist, yes, about 5 or 6 names, but all v secret I'm afraid!

I am glad to read so many of you are thirsty out there. I am only 8 weeks and I am very thirsty, more than usual. It helps curb nausea I am finding, so I am drinking lots and using lots of toilet paper!

beesonmummyshead · 11/10/2009 22:01

this happened to me when I was at about the same stage in pregnancy, my urine tests were negative for diabetes too. right at the end though, the last 2 weeks I started seriously retaining water (no good reason, blood pressure fine) but i looked like a weeble and my legs were the same size from thigh to ankle, with little toes poking out the end. Was incredibly uncomfortable, but it subsided (after getting worse ) about a week after giving birth

Didn't mean to scare you, just thought you might like to know that you can drink like a fish, and look like a water balloon without anything being wrong

noassociation · 16/02/2010 22:31

I am soooo thirsty (am 13 weeks) It's driving me potty! It's hard to quench my thirst and my lips are so dry and sore, they are very painful unless I lather them in lip balm! I'm going to mention it to the MW but least I now know it can be part of a normal pregnancy > to be extraordinarily thirsty. I just wish there was a way to feel adequetly quenched and to heal my poor lips... just something else to put up with I guess
