do anyone else's nipples go ballistically painful if they get cold?

this is my worst pregnancy thing (now 24 weeks). if they get cold the ends go white and it feels like the the devil is prodding them with hot pokers and ice cubes at the same time.

can't think of what to do apart from wear thermals and apply hot flannels, but would love to know that I'm not the only one out there ...

Me me me 22 weeks and it puts me off going outside

WombOfOnesOwn · 22/01/2016 23:22

ME OH GOD THIS IS ME!! This is one of the worst parts of pregnancy for me (I'm 36 weeks tomorrow). God does it hurt, and it's worst when it happens at work and I'm having to try to keep a straight face in a meeting without pawing at my own boobs in the conference room like some sort of deranged pervert.

When it doesn't happen in a meeting, I have little tiny re-usable heat packs. You snap a piece of metal in this liquid pouch, and it heats up and becomes first a jelly-like substance, then solid when it cools. You boil them to "refresh" them to their liquid state for reuse, so I can take them home with me when they are expended. These plus a padded bra (to disguise the outline of the little tiny heat pouches) have been a godsend.

Haha this is me! I went out for a walk the other night and had to come home they were sooooo painful, sat with hot flannels on them!

SkiptonLass2 · 23/01/2016 19:48

Like wistful, I had this plus damage plus shallow latch. The pain was something else.
I found one of those wheat bag things you microwave was helpful.

I'm 34 weeks pregnant and I have suffered with this awful pain the whole of my pregnancy. Like everyone else, I am reduced to tears every time it comes on and nothing I do really helps. The pain, which i describe as having my nipples sawn off or being yanked by a hot/freezing cold nipple clamp lasts about ten minutes. Those ten minutes i lose all Sense of reality and I cannot be comforted so if this happens when I'm out its a complete nightmare.

I read up on reynauds and I'm happy to self diagnose because it seems most gp's don't know a lot about this.

I find that the pain starts if I get goose pimples, this could be simply getting out of bed in the morning so I understand it's diffucult to stay warm all the time.

Literally I'd say after all the morning sickness, migraines, back ache and all the other wonderful pregnancy symptoms on offer, this is by far the worst.

Good luck folks
p. S I'm hoping to b/feed but I am scared this will continue and if it does, I'll be formulas new best mate x

I don't have any answers but I honestly thought I was being 'a bit soft' with the pain I've been getting, it's excruciating! No one I've spoken to seems to have suffered with this so I'm selfishly so glad I'm not the only one! x

I literally just went through this! I'm six months pregnant, fifth child. (!!) And I've experienced this before with previous pregnancies. But for some reason you forget all about what happens each time (yikes) and I was/am stunned at how painful my nipples have been!! I remember a doctor telling me it's milk/colostrum/blood pressure build up..And to ease the pain it is best to "milk" yourself!!! It has its disadvantages ..Such as ..Yay what fun this is..As you pull at your already painful breasts..And then the following small belly contractions for the stimulation. But.. I swear by this.. get a wash cloth and make it as hot as you can stand!! (It will cool quickly so timing is key) and gently (tearfully) stimulate your milk production wiping away the milk with the hot cloth ..It will absolutely ease the pressure and will also be beneficial when it comes to being ready to produce the good stuff! I suggest relaxing a little after because you'll find yourself getting cramps but it's a million times better then having your nipples feel like they can cut diamonds!!!!!!!!!! Again, really surprised no one has suggested this. And I hope my opinion will help at least a few of the suffering mommies!!!

This too shall pass, and it's worth it.

Wow, i'm 31 weeks pregnant with second DD and had this excrutiating pain in my nipples for the first time the other day. Was in the car with my father and 2 year old daughter. Thought i would die. Lasted 20 minutes, now i'm scared to go outside. And this winter is really serious! Will have to get heat pads so life and christmas can go on!!!

Mrstobe90 · 03/12/2017 10:46

Omg yes! Whenever I get out the shower, they hurt sooooo bad!

BlueRaincoat89 · 04/12/2017 10:34

I've got this too - I've had a hot water bottle glued to my boobs for most of the weekend!

Lisamarie82m · 29/12/2018 20:00

Omg yes and can reduce me to tears. Last about 5 to 10 mins. I'm now 28 weeks with my first DD. I have tried the warm flannels and warm water in the sink but didnt seem to work. And I also thought I was being a bit of a wimp lol, but I'm so pleased I'm not the only one suffering with this (sorry ladies) the only thing I've found to work is to hover over the heater in the room to warm up. I will give the hand warmers a try tho

LB482 · 30/10/2019 12:25

so glad to read this isn't just me, sat here with a microwavable lavender scented bean bag thing (like a hot water bottle but for your neck, I think I got it from tk maxx) stuffed down my top! it is doing the trick ;-)

TheMendoza3 · 15/12/2019 15:22

I thought I was the only one out there with this problem. Everyone I tried describing this pain to thought I was crazy. It feels like someone is holding icecubes on my nipples and at the same time, applying fire. It has occurred with all the of my pregnancies. The onset of it happened the latest with this pregnancy, just today at a little over six months. I was told by one doctor that when we get cold our milk ducts constrict causing the pain. The pain subsides after birth because typically we are either breastfeeding or pumping. In turn the milk is not just sitting there being constricted in the ducts while we are cold. Do keep the boobies warm ladies. I hope this helps at least one person.

Yes me too! I’m 21 weeks and had this for a while I posted on here and someone suggested it might be raynaulds which sounded so spot on!

Hi 62 year old man here, I have had hormonal problems and my breasts have developed (c - cup now & growing) . trying to get over the stigma of it and have accepted it. Docs have been no help so far. I have the nipple pain when cold and they get erect. No end of pregnancy is coming for me. (lol) Is the best advice to use heat and keep them warm or have any of you ladies got any suggestions.

ElonaWise · 11/03/2021 12:26

OMG this is absolutely killing me. The pain is so intense. I have had to warm mine up with a hair dryer and usually takes about an hour to go down. Absolutely so painful. Scared this only a tiny thing in comparison to breast feeding.

Grognonne · 11/03/2021 13:40

Yes!! I had this so bad early on. It did stop after the 25wk mark though.
