Hi

I had SPD in Pg#1 and am currently TTC #2.

I got it quite near the end (around 33weeks) and ended up with a support belt and on crutches. The statistics show that I am likely to get it again in the next pregnancy and it will be worse but was wondering if there were others out there who didn't get it again, or didn't get it any worse second time? Or those that did, if they can shed any light to help me(and others)?

Do you think anything helped you to not get it? I am desperate to not get it again, and if there is anything that I can do I will try it, including losing weight, swimming everyday etc. The pain was pretty bad!

Basically want to know everything...The Good, The Bad and The Ugly!
Thanks

Hi domestic

It is so underexposed isn't it! Me and my partner were talking about it last night, him saying I must be really unlucky as he had never heard of it before I had it. I ended up explaining that there are lots of people out there with it, but it is not publisised as much as, say, pre-eclampsia. Everyone is made aware of pre-eclamsia ( understanably, as it is life threatening) but I, myself know only one person that has actually had it. I think with SPD, because it isn't life threatening they don't bother to research and train on it. Therefore giving us that have had it a shitty ride in our pregnancies and lots of 'what if's'.#

I am a little concerned that a few of you found swimming was a no-no, as I was hoping this was going to be my main form of exercise during pregnancy, so as not to put on too much weight, like last time!

Good post, domestic.
I am off to see my physio on Monday, even though I am okay so far, becasue I want to make sure I remain that way! I also have co-codamol on stand-by, though I am hoping I might be okay like my pal who was fine second time round. Knowing what to do/avoid is a big factor.
Hope everyone is not too sore/worried/laid up today.

well i was in and out very quickly my DH dropped me and left he could of stuck around -9.30am apt out at 9.48am!
so after he told me i have not pulled any major muscles( i knew this) and i have not doe any damage to my spine( i knew this too) he said i should speak to my MW they see more mums like me and can help me!!!!!!!!!
"there is not much i can do for you because your pregnant " ermm didnt you know this when appt was made!!!
so after hitting my kness for reflex and lifting up and down my arms?????? and telling me to bend in all directions he said " i will suggest you take pain killers and see how that helps! Why did i bother, what was the point! i guess i will wait to see my mw next month!!!!!!! wonderful!
so ermm i dont think they help, he actually just provoked the pain and i hobbled out clutching my note with an empty stomach!AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH
No belt was offered, so i will go back to my GP and demand something to be done!

Oh Mama2b5 That is terrible. You should complain. Is it definitely SPD?

It really shocks me how little some MW/HV/Physios know about this condition. He should, at the least, have given you an information leaflet on SPD and explained what you should and shouldn't be doing if nothing else.

I would make an appointment with the GP and ask for a referal to a specialist explaining what this physio said.

for you!

If need be print out some pages off of the link on here and take them with you to help explain to these 'professionals' what it is you are suffering with.

Ahh thanks for that PASWG - yeh i'm going to discuss it with my GP, the waste of time and effort also half day off work wasted!!!!
I spoke to my DH and he has offered to run and fetch hot water bottle and rub any sore area's -

nickytwotimes · 01/10/2009 20:33

That is crap Mama2.
Sadly, it is an all too common experience.
Very infuriating.
PASAWIG has a good suggestion. Hope you get some proper care soon.

It is totally normal. It makes me so angry.

My MW didn't even bother writing it in my notes, she thought it wasn't worth noting the fact that I was unable to physically make it up the stairs to the appointment and that I couldn't stop crying for the pain. She just wrote- baby growing normally! I was unable to get the hospital or GP to give me crutches (had to borrow them from a friend who had had a skiing accident) and only saw a physio right at the very end when it was too late. She had been running classes for months, but no-one had known about them to refer me.

I am sorry Mama2 but if you want advice get it from MN and Pelvic Partnership. Almost all health professionals, at least in the NHS, will only make you even more frustrated and angry. Some even give downright dangerous advice eg. keep active.

I would love to see a MN campaign.

I agree that the health professionls advice is not always the best. Following DD's birth I tried to rest as much as possible and used crutches when up and about (very severe SPD). In the end I had to force myself to walk up the corridor without any aid to prove to the physio that I could be discharged. Grrrrr. DH met me at the other end with my crutches once she had gone. If I had my time again I would have just discharged myself.

I got SPD at 20 weeks with my first and at 15 weeks with this, my second. I am walking like a Geisha girl and turning over in bed is agony. DS1 is 3 and I can no longer walk him to nursery so family help out. I am due to see a NHS physio next week (I am 32 weeks). I put off going until now as last time it didn't help a lot and the belt they gave me was a big chunky velcro thing like a Batman utility belt. I understand they now give out tubigrip things which are better.

Everyone has my deepest sympathy- its sometimes hard to explain SPD to people who have nevr heard of it. ("Dad- the join of my pubic bone keeps grinding together when I walk")

Mama2b5 · 02/10/2009 23:25

last nite i was doubled in pain,i couldnt move at all and just had to stay in the postion until DH came home, he just didnt know what to do and was offering me tea,hot chocolate and a rub down with some hot oils! i just told him to roll me over and get the covers over me!
Thankfully woke up not in pain and managed not to reach for the painkillers that the MW gave me that will then make me more constipated then i am!
its driving me mad and i have to go up and down stairs in my house and i live in an area with many hills! not ideal!!!! i wonder if i could hire 2 strong men to carry me around!!!
not sure if DH will be pleased but it will help me out!my manager is off for 2 weeks and HR will not acept my copy of matb1 for me to be assessed at work great!!!! right now i could asked to be signed off!
