Am I the only one who hates all these acronyms on this website??

Any chance of us all going back to plain English??

OP posts:

Unlikely.

There is an acronym list somewhere.

Be grateful that text speak is not acceptable - that would be a lot worse.

fruitshootsandheaves · 29/09/2009 13:23

IMHO YABabitU AFAIK and FYI lots of people give the acronyms a BFP thumbs up
HTH but IKWYM

sorry couldn't resist

Iklboo · 29/09/2009 13:24

Where I work it's all bloody acronyms - we sound like a bunch of spies!

peanutbutterkid · 29/09/2009 13:25

Feeling a little left out, OP?
Most the acronyms here are ubiquitous on Internet parenting websites, anyway.

Eyeballls · 29/09/2009 13:25

No swearing and now no acronyms... OMFG...

vickiadele · 29/09/2009 13:40

i still dont know y it is ds/dd, whats the first d for?

NellieTheEllie · 29/09/2009 13:55

acronym list
the 'd' is for Darling
what is yy? I've seen this alot, but only recently and have no idea what it means.

stillstanding · 29/09/2009 13:57

They can be really confusing - particularly on the TTC threads where there is a whole other language going on. But the acronym list helps and, if it isnt on there, just ask. People will always help you.

MrsBadger · 29/09/2009 14:17

I'd rather have acronyms and no textspeak than vice versa...

yy is usually 'yes yes' ie agreeing vigorously with previous suggestion

VanillaIce · 29/09/2009 14:34

What's the reason for using the acronyms? Are they supposed to make typing quicker? Why do I never see the word husband or daughter on here?

Cies · 29/09/2009 14:39

I don't mind acronyms but sometimes they can confuse - GP can be grandparents or general practitioner, GA can be Gas and Air or General Anasthetic etc.

MovingOutOfBlighty · 29/09/2009 14:40

I like the acronyms but HATE text speak. Go figure.

IdrisTheDragon · 29/09/2009 14:42

Cies, you can usually work out from the context which it is. And I think it is unlikely people would type general practitioner rather than GP.

procrastinatingparent · 29/09/2009 14:50

I like the acronyms - they make me feel part of a secret(ish) society.

Txtspk, OTOH, makes me roll my eyes, and move on quickly past the post. I don't even like using it when I text.

MrsBadger · 29/09/2009 14:51

...and people often use an acronym instead of a real name when documenting speech

eg

This morning I said 'DD, where are your shoes?' and she promptly replied 'Oh I fed them to the cat'

reads completely differently to

This morning I said 'Daughter, where are your shoes?'...

Mama2b5 · 29/09/2009 14:52

i was confused but its seems im catching on real quick! because people know wot im talking about! xx

MrsBadger · 29/09/2009 14:56

and Mama2b5, once you get a more memorable nickname, stop putting kisses at the end of your posts and start spelling it 'what', you will become a veritable paragon and part of the MN elite...

echops · 29/09/2009 15:49

I hate all the ds/dd/dh/dp too!!!

BecauseImWorthIt · 29/09/2009 15:51

You don't have to use them, you know! If you prefer typing out 'darling husband' in full, be our guest!

squeaver · 29/09/2009 15:52

This is my favourites:
