Maternity underwear makes me want to cry - any advice please?!

Why is it all so awful?

Am 26 weeks and have just been to get measured. Everything the lady brought in looked like something you might find in my grannies top drawer. I wouldn't mind it they gave me a decent shape but as well as being ugly they all seemed to give me Madonna style cone boobs.

My mum insists that if I have to invest in the granny scaffolding in order to avoid saggy post preggers boobs

I'm quite happy to give up my usual the pretty, lacey stuff and switch to non-wired minimalism but I just cant bring myself to

Any ideas as to where I might find something reasonable?

ok, you don't need to buy special underwear to avoid saggy boobs. Sadly boobs generally do sag post baby, and if they are going to it won't matter what bra you've worn.

If you do want to buy pretty maternity/nursing bras try figleaves

Some lovely stuff but not cheap. If you know your size you can often get it cheaper on ebay

blondieminx · 22/09/2009 15:20

HotMilk also have a good reputation for providing prettier stuff, have been dropping hints to DH but no joy so far!

GoldenSnitch · 22/09/2009 15:45

I stuck with my underwired bras this time after being hellishly uncomfortable and weirdly shaped for the whole 9 months and beyond with DS.

I like my boobs to be above my bump not resting on it!!

As long as they are well fitted and not pressing anywhere, you're fine.

Will be buying myself some underwired feeding bras in the next few weeks but as I started a G cup, I think Bravissimo is going to be my only option

Scorps · 22/09/2009 15:48

TBH i have never worn maternity bras, just nursing bras (LOVE Hotmilk)

Anita do underwired bras for nursing btw

TakeLovingChances · 22/09/2009 19:17

I know what you mean!

Go to www.hotmilklingerie.co.nz

They do SUPER SEXY maternity bras and the sight is really well laid out.

I don't think they ship to UK, but go to their sight for ideas and Figleaves sell some of their bras.

You won't be disappointed!

My answer sounds a bit dull after all the above! I bought a fushia pink T-shirt bra from mothercare (the previous M&S maternity bras bought 5 weeks earlier now too small...). I love my new pink one -it's not drab, it's v v comfy and makes my breasts a great shape under clothes (imo!), they don't sag at all.

then get some of the sexier ones above for when you need something extra!!

baby1onway · 22/09/2009 19:24

i wud definetly recommend la senza!up 2 a DD thats where i got mine from..until recently as theyve probably tripled in size!!

littleomar · 22/09/2009 19:27

i actually cried in bravissimo the other day, never mind wanted to

there are no nice maternity bras

shock absorber - no mucking about

salvadory · 22/09/2009 19:30

I like Elle McPherson's range of nursing bras, they're really comfy and pretty-ish considering. Not keen on Hotmilk (bought two recently for the bargain price of £5.99 each!) but despite looking less like a nursing bra they're not as comfy as the Elle Mcp ones (i'm now a 32E so comfort important)
If you don't want to spend too much money try one of the retail outlets (I live near Cheshire Oaks and they have an Elle McP concession there, any colour nursing bra you like as long as it's lilac or lime green- seemed like a good idea in the summer )

I had a nightmare with trying to get bras to fit-even at Rigby and Peller, they all seemed to dig in after 10 mins of wearing. I would invest in some bra extenders that allow you to adjust the back of your bra. Even that tho' still wasn't ideal. Mothercare do some ok t-shirty type nursing bras.
Hope this helps.

Neon · 22/09/2009 19:31

Topshop have nice underwear: Topshop underwear

ButtercupWafflehead · 22/09/2009 19:34

I went to M&S and bought non-underwired to last me through pregnancy. Also invested in one of those Granny-esque extenders towards the end, from Haberdashery dept.

Agree with Mothercare for plain t-shirt nursing bras.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 22/09/2009 19:50

i wear underwired when pregnant - tis fine as long as they fit properly. nursing bras are all hideous, however -- the "sexy" ones (hotmilk, amoralia) just make you look matronly and desperate

DebbieButler · 22/09/2009 20:58

Have you seen this Maternity Underwear site? It does some great maternity underwear from all major retailers and has some lovely maternity bras. They also do voucher codes and offers so might even pick up a bargain.

Am I the only person who wore the same style of underwear whilst pg as when not pg? I never owned or ever felt the need to buy separate pregnancy underwear. I can kind of understand the bra thing, but do people really need different knickers, with huge elasticated waistbands like maternity trousers or something?

Dawnybabe · 22/09/2009 23:12

You wait till your milk comes in and you're breastfeeding. You will learn what it is to really despair at your boobs.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 22/09/2009 23:21

No I didn't either Tidey -- I only expanded in the middle, underwear continued to fit above and below. I even wore normal briefs after my c-sections, they still came well above the scar. Have had trouble finding nursing bras in my size though as I am a small band/large cup combination and apparently the only woman on earth whose ribcage hasn't massively increased during pregnancy

Firsttimer7259 · 24/09/2009 08:00

I think this really depends on how big your boobs are. I have seen some things that dont make me want to cry (at Gap and others) but these dont have enough support for my boobs. But the cone - ness of my J lewis bra is less than what I get from Bravissimo bra

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 24/09/2009 10:20

Blossom Mother & Child has pretty (and pricey) stuff, though only for the modest of nork.

fififolle · 29/09/2009 09:42

After weeks of wearing v boring mothercare soft cup bras and getting increasingly fed up, I went to Asda and bought lovely underwired set in next size up. Far comfier and makes me feel far happier. Bra was only £8 so I don't mind if it only fits for a sort time!

Can someone explain what the difference is between a maternity bra and a normal bra? I didn't even know there was such a thing (or I assumed that's what a nursing bra was called). I'm new to this (8 weeks pregnant). My bras are all getting a bit tight so I'm considering getting bigger ones, but I'm wondering how big I should go and how long they'll last if I've got 32 weeks to go!

Excited85 · 07/06/2013 17:26

How come underwired bras are meant to be bad? I'm only an A cup so still in my padded bras, wouldn't dare be seen out in public otherwise and don't think you can get them without wire?
