why are maternity tights so rubbish

I know there was a thread about this earlier this year but just wanted to rant/see if anyone had come up with anything better in the meantime. I am wear dresses and tights to work all the time, last pregnancy was in summer but due now New Years Day - I have spent what seems a fortune on different maternity rights and all but one are just rubbish. Being short probably doesn't help but still. I have tried: M&S opaque, £6, sagged within 10 mins; Seraphine opaque, £12 at least, saggy and floppy; John Lewis, £2.50, both pairs laddered in one day; Noppies, £12, made for giantesses..The only ones that are work at all are the Mama Spanx which of course are £25 and only come in sheer (they are $28 in the US which is a frustrating mark up to have to pay here). I suppose I shall have to treat my Mama Spanx very carefully and/or go for the leggings/boots option that others mention. But if anyone knows of the elusive affordable wonder brand....

I suppose the market isn't big enough for anyone to develop anything good at less than £25 but it is frustrating, Wolford have all these fab tights in lovely colours but nothing for the pregnant. I wonder if they are missing a gap.

I wore JoJo Maman Bebe ones for everyday wear last time and they were pretty good.

ah i remember the days... my solutions were to wear either hold-ups or fishnet type tthingies, which expand neatly over the bump.

butterscotch · 21/09/2009 21:09

I found when they sag at the top an extra pair of knickers helps keep them in place that way you wear normal size tucked under bump with knickers on however I was preggars mostly summer last time I thought I would put bump band on between knickers and bump to stop it getting drafty iykwim?

Next maternity leggings are the most comfy imho.

Hi
I'm 5'2" and the Mothercare ones were okay for me.

Rumpole · 22/09/2009 16:38

When I was pregnant with my ds, I found some great ones on www.zodee.co.uk. They have some different brands I haven't found anywhere else. V comfy over bump tights which were supportive and really soft.

Have you had a look at maternity underwear site. They have a maternity hosiery section and offer tights from some great retailers and also do voucher codes if there are any.

wow made it into the hot threads. i knew it could not just be me. Thanks for tips from everyone - have actually been wearing Emma Jane's today which are not too bad, and the mytights website looks useful. and will look again at mothercare. only 14 more weeks to go anyway!

h & m do really good opaque and thick wooly ones

snapple · 23/09/2009 11:15

I'm with the taller ladies here - I have spent 2 hours hunting in John Lewis and M&S and Boots and after some purchases - none of them fit.

The other day I thought I was suffocating my bub to be as the ones I was wearing were so tight, I was told that my bump had reduced.

HolidaysQueen · 23/09/2009 12:40

If you're wearing them for fashiony reasons rather than warmth, i found that normal fishnet type tights work much better as they have much more give in the top rather than the tight mesh of normal opaques. So any of the fancy fishnet types you get in M&S and elsewhere worked great in pregnancy. But if you want them for warmth then I didn't find any that worked and resorted to trousers in the depths of winter! FWIW, I did find that my bump was a useful internal furnace so I did actually manage to get away with fishnets only for most of the winter without freezing!

Try Emma Jane Maternity Support tights from Maternity Belt, they're £3, give you loads of comfort and fit really well. There are also voucher codes on maternity belt so you can get money off your first order - i'm using this site for all my maternity clothes and seem to get discounts off everything!

I just got some from Asda, a new range £4, they are brilliant.

Debbie, do you work for Emma Jane Maternity then?

amoney · 25/10/2010 08:17

Asda maternity tights £4 (60 denier)
I wasn't expecting much from maternity tights (as i have struggled with finding the right pair of tights all my life!) but tried these and for me they are fantastic, they go over the bump and are really comfy

I bought a couple of pairs of Seraphine sheer tights (2 pairs for 7.50 - not bad) www.seraphine.com/maternity-clothes-categories/maternity-tights/
They were pretty good (didn't have that painted gravy leg look) and lasted quite a while - but most importantly they never rolled down which was the most frustrating thing about the maternity Spanx.
