Sick to death of being called 'fat'

I wasn't fat before I was pregnant. I am not fat now. I have a big belly, granted, but that is full of baby, placenta and fluid, NOT fat.

So why do people think they have the right to call me fat? Every time I speak to my mum, she gleefully asks, 'Are you getting fat yet?' or, 'Will you still be working in January, or will you be too fat?'.

A woman I barely know came up to me at work yesterday and said, 'All right tubs!'. I just stared at her in shock and anger. She was hardly sylph-like herself!

I am NOT 'fat', I am PREGNANT. Show a bit more respect!

Ahh, nobody touches my bump. My friends warned me that people would, but I obviously don't look very approachable. My friends are pleasant, approachable, friendly sorts. I am not.

3??? Blimey, good luck!

my MIL used to make comments about my weight, even before we were married (eg, "you won't suit that type of wedding dress, your thighs are quite heavy..." etc, and about my SIL, "she's put on/lost a lot of weight, she's been to the gym"). I got used to the comments about weight (my mum is also obsessed with hers, and everyone else's weight fluctuations eg when I said I was pregnant, and she hadn't noticed, by whch I meant, she hadn't noticedhow tired I was, she said, "well you have always had a bit of a tummy haven't you"). So, am wondering what MIL will say first time she sees bump...bit worried about comments, but at least DH defends me 100% as he knows she can reduce me to tears.

BTW, i love my mum, and MIL VERY much, just wish they weren't obsessed with weight. Am determined that if DC is a DD, i will NEVER mention her size.

What sort of twunt calls a pregnant woman 'fat'?

Sorry you are going thru this - I always get huge bumps, once they appear at 6/7 months (), then constantly get called 'huge' and actually, I get 'fat' too.

Keep ur chin up - you're beautiful.

wow cake 3! good for you!

We are all beautiful!

I'm normally a 10/12, and even fit into MOST of my clothes now, tho I am 6 months gone. I have a huge belly, all nice and round, full of baby, and the rest of me is fairly normal. A bit bigger, granted, but in no way shape or form fat. Yet I also got fat comments, mostly from my mum, who having gone thru the menopause, is size obsessed. The best way to deal with any fat comment is to snap back, definately, I've given every person who commented an utter earful, and that has shut ALL the comments up, and now nobody says anything. (and why the eff should they??)There is no reason why you have to take such stupid comment, it's utterly rude on their part, and demeaning for you too.

NewbeeMummy - just wanted to say I think you are awesome!

And can I check something, do people think it's okay to admire somebody's growing bump? I've always liked this myself, and noticed I comment (positively!) on other people's bumps. But should I stop?

Ninjacat · 23/09/2009 09:10

I'm 31wks. I get comments all the time telling me just how big I am!
I've even had a woman ordering a table for a work meal tell the restaurant that they would need a table with extra space for me! How rude
And really I'm NOT THAT BIG

NewbeeMummy · 23/09/2009 11:01

Thanks IsItMeOr I must stress it really was completely out of my normal character, but I have noticed that being a bit stroppy has made my life a lot more simple (people take less advantage)

As for the admiring the bump, there is one girl at work, who hasn't had any children, and she keeps making really positive comments about the growing bump, not the standard "god you're huge" type of thing that everyone else makes, and she always asks if she may touch it, that I really don't mind so much, and have even pointed out that if she feels a certain spot she can feel it's feet/ back etc

It's nice to see someone so amazed at what my body is doing and reminds me how lucky I am, and how many people struggle to get to this stage

bevlin · 23/09/2009 15:22

I think if people joke about you being fat when your pregnant, it's because they feel safe doing so in the knowledge that it is because you are PG -IYKWIM. I was always slim then when I fell PG everyone at work, mostly men, would call me fatty or Id get 'your looking swell' (yawn)! BUT, I did end up putting on 3 stone 5lbs and towards the end.....the fat jokes stopped, thats when I knew I WAS officially fat .
In other words, don't be offended, it's because most people feel safe you are not fat and it is just a joke. They would never do it to someone who is usually obese would they?

3 babies?! How did you manage that???!!!

CakeBuddy · 24/09/2009 11:28

Would seem there were 3 eggs fertilised by 3 different sperm at the same time. Had a scan this morning and delighted to see 3 heartbeats and 3 healthy babies, each with their own placenta!

iateallthecreameggsyummy · 24/09/2009 11:31
