Am I in labour or is it just a 'run' of BH? Help!

Hi ladies,

I am in need of some speedy advice. I am 35weeks 4 days with twins.

Yesterday, I had a 'run' of Braxton Hicks - for about 2 hours I had a couple an hour - no big deal, but more than I have had before. Not painful, just a bit uncomfy (bowling ball in stomach sort of uncomfy).

Nothing overnight, nothing today, till this evening - had 6 in the past hour (every 10 minutes but last 2 only 7 minutes apart. Again, not painful, just uncomfy (and the babies don't like them!)

My question is - how do I know if I am starting to go into labour? Is it just the pain level that is different? Is it normal to have these 'runs' of Braxton Hicks??

Help me, Oh Wise Ones

look, sorry to be doctorish about this, but you have twins, are still technically preterm, and are an hour away from hospital. If you any regular contractions or feel again that your babies are unhappy, you need to go in to hospital. Phoning your mw is unlikely to be of any benefit, tbh. Yes, these may well be braxton hicks, but you need assessment in hospital, perhaps checking whether you are dilated or not. Things can progress v.quickly with twins sometimes and some assistance may be needed with twin 2. Better safe than sorry - and contrary to popular MN opinion, we obstetricians are on the whole a nice caring bunch who are not desperate for everyone to have a Caesarean section! let us know what is happening.

Hi eeky,

Ok, advice taken. I will call the delivery suite and do what they say.

FWIW, all the obstetricians at my hospital are marvellous and have been wonderful through the whole pg.

Thanks for the input.

Hi all!

I'm back - with twins still inside!

Spent the night in the delivery suite being monitored - babies are fine, I am fine, not dilated although I did have protein in my wee so they wanted to do blood tests for liver function, urates etc. before they gave me the all clear, which they did this morning.

Instructions are to rest and try to drink more, see MW at least weekly and I have an 'open pass' to the delivery unit if I have any more or stronger contractions, or develop headaches or other pre-eclampsia symptoms.

So, still here!! Thanks for all the advice last night, ladies.

Glad you and the babies are ok

Comma2 · 06/09/2009 23:25

Not sure how this ended, but you passed your plug, followed by contractions, painful or not, at abou the time you'd be due with twins, you want a cesarian.... I'd put at least a call to the MW in! You prob already did....let us know what happened!

eeky · 06/09/2009 23:36

excellent, glad you and babes are all ok. Just remember that advice to rest!
