controversial issue, i know. Personally i wouldn't but i know quite a few women who use it to alleviate severe (and not so severe ) morning sickness as it's an anti-emetic. Though i get the impression that some of the women i know are just using this as an excuse. Does anyone have any experience of this? i'm treated a bit like a freak for disapproving at times...

I would never smoke weed or eat it whilst pg - there is strong anectodotal evidence to suggest it causes miscarriage - though of course a study would be inethical.

it's bloody obvious if you think about it - mucks with your pulse, appetite and mental state - if you smoke it with nicotine it restricts oxygen flow to the brain. Will do the same for the foetus.

that said, I smoked plenty back in my careless youth, as did huge numbers of my aquaintances....who grew up, got jobs, mortgages and had children. I find the evidence of linked causation with mental episodes debatable to say the least (as with any drug there is chicken-and-egg relationship with mental illness)

that said, i know people whose mental illness eased when they quit hash as part of their care. But then, they also gave up drinking heavily, damaging relationships etc...

There is never going to be strong scientific evidence that this drug does or does not damage the foetus because it would be unethical to do so. All we have to go off is surveys of those mothers who do smoke cannabis with those that do not. This suggests that there those mothers who do smoke cannabis tended to have smaller babies with a greater risk of prematurity and admittance to SCBU.

That is enough evidence for me to decide that I wouldn't take cannabis during pg, I don't need to know what additional harm it is doing to the development of the foetus.

If you feel bad enough with ms that you want to take something to alleviate it would a drug that has gone through 15 years of tissue culture, animal and human testing not be a safer option than a completely uncontrolled substance?

I knew an Editor of a ''cannabis magazine'' that no longer exists, and he wrote a stupid, misinformed article on ''cannabis and pregnancy'',which featured a ''survey'' of three young mothers, two of which said ''the baby gives a little dance in the womb when you have a toke[puff]'', and the third mother-to-be was pictured dragging on a spliff while her mates looked on.
Tragically, this young mother's baby died in utero, and she had the stress of having to deliver a dead baby.
The editor was widely slated by the cannabis community at the time in Holland, and it is just not worth taking ANY drug when pregnant.Babies of smokers tend to be underweight, as smoke starves the baby of oxygen, and cannabis smoke is an unknown quantity, but won't be good for a developing fetus, surely?
I suffered grim morning sickness, as did my dear Mum, and she was offered a ''wonder drug'', but declined~ the drug? Thalidomide.
Put up with the awful nausea~it won't last for ever, and a healthy Baby is worth much more than anything!
Soda~water and marmite toast helped..

is this post supposed to be a joke? there is tonnes of medical reports and articles published on the use of drugs in pregnancy. the likely outcome is a metally retarded child or a still born one. it is not funny to start such threads on MN. this is utterly ignorant and immature.

I know a friend who smoked throughout her pregnancy,

she was so severley sick, she smoked one joint in the afternoon just so she had enough time to eat some food.

doesnt seem silly to me although i am sure there are plenty who use it as an excuse!

I would be very careful with canabis if anyone has any mental health issues in your family as it can cause issues.

First of all it is against the law to take cannabis. Doesnt that tell you something?
Might as well pop a few ecstasy pills, snort a line of cocaine, or inject some heroin will you're at it!
I have to deal with people that take cannabis where I work. And believe me, it does effect you're brain.
If you're not slow and dopey, you're paranoid or angry when you come off you're relaxed state.
Obviously people who take it,either for pleasure or to aide a painfull illness etc will not agree. As they won't notice the effects on themselves. But get a loved one or family memeber to honestly say if they see a change in behaviour, and they will tell you.
I can't comment on the physical evidence found in the news about the effects it has on you, as i'm not a researcher or doctor.
All I can say is the bad effects on personality I see day in, day out!
Would anyone really give their new born baby a spliff, or crush up some resin into the babys bottle/ food?
Doubt it!!!
The drug crosses the placenta - so its the same thing as giving it to your baby!!

Not to disagree with everyone else. I know a lot of people including my own mother who smoked cannabis (small amounts, neat and not skunk or chemically treated cannabis) and have had perfectley fine births/children with no abnormalities.
If you can put up with morning sickness without smoking weed its probably better tho!
