Hi, I wonder if anyony can help me? Last May I had Lletz treatment as I had CIN3 which effected my whole cervix. I had a little boy a couple of years before and had a smooth pregnancy and labour. All of the precancerous cells were removed and have had to normal smears since. I fell pregnant in April this year and miscarried at 10 weeks. I had a missed miscarriage and had to have medical management. Me and my partener have tried again and I have just found out that I am pregnant!! I am over the moon, but I have just been told that Lletz can cause women to miscarry has anyone else been through this at all as my doctoer agrees but midwife doesn't?? Thank you.

Thisismypassword: sounds very unreasonable they won't do cervical scan. It only takes a few minutes and surly better to be safe than sorry. I've only had 1 LLETZ and consultant wanted to scan me to check cervix length. You could go to your GP and get them to follow up. I'm not sure how many weeks you are but Trouble is any potential delay this may take so I'd start looking at private options in the meantime just to be on safe side. You'd need referral for this from your GP anyway.

Hi, I have only had one lletz treatment for CIN2 and I had an appointment come through to check the length of my cervix, appointment is next week. I didn't request it but had had a consultant appointment before Christmas for something else and mentioned that I had some slight bleeding after fun stuff and when I had my 12 weeks scan and wondered if it could be from the cervix. He didn't say much and then the appointment came through, so if I can get one by not pushing for it you should definitely get one

thisismypassword · 14/01/2015 20:10

I'm 14 weeks and will find out next week if I can have scan. If not I'll go private. Hopefully scan around 16 weeks will be ok. I've read cervical length scans can be done at 16, 20 and 24 weeks. Do I really have to be referred by gp to go private??

Chatty987 · 14/01/2015 21:15

Yes I'm pretty sure you need go referral to see a private consultant. You could call up private consultant's secretary and ask them. They will be able to advise you. Push for scan at 16 weeks so that if you need a stitch they will do it more or less straightaway. If you have incompetent cervix, waiting until later on might be too late (sorry don't mean to scare you).

I had lletz treatment in 2013 for CIN2. The area they removed was small. At my last check, I asked if I'd need a scan or stint and was told rather patronising that they don't do that in our nhs trust. Felt stupid for asking. So this thread is very interesting although I'm not too worried.

Stitch, even!

I felt the need to add to this thread....

I had a LLETZ in June 2013 after a perfect pregnancy/birth in 2011. Fell pregnant with my second child in August 2014. At 7 and 12 weeks I had bleeds. I knew something wasn't right so pushed for a cervical scan at 14 weeks where all was fine. Consultant made me feel like I was worrying over nothing as I'd only had one LLETZ.
Well fast forward to 20 weeks, I lost the mucus plug and started losing fluid and dilating the following week, leading to birth of ds at 21+6 3 weeks ago.
I don't mean to scare anyone with this post but I had no idea about the link between LLETZ and incompetent cervix before my sad experience. If you feel you need to be monitored more closely then push for it, I certainly will next pregnancy.

applecore0317 · 04/02/2015 22:21

I agree with pushing for it, as said above I had only one lletz treatment and was referred due to bleeding after intercourse.

have now been for three internal scans three weeks running and my cervix has shortened from 3.1cm to 2.4cm. Still getting monitored weekly and have been prescribed protesgerone to try and stop it shortening any further and had the first of two steroid injections today to help the babies lungs develop in case of early labour. 24 weeks today. Mine was CIN2 and the size of affected cells was no bigger than a thumb nail... although not sure how much they removed

sorry for your loss elisej2012

I had a loop excision in 2006 for CIN 2/3. In December, I lost my son at 22 weeks due to a weakened cervix. I'm still awaiting test results to find out why, but I'm convinced it's due to this treatment. When I mentioned this to my midwife at my 8 week appointment she didn't seem concerned. 2 days ago, I found out that a friend of mine at the same surgery was referred to a consultant because of her treatment. I just don't understand why one person can be referred 'just in case' and I wasn't. I'm now so angry that my sons death could possibly have been prevented if someone just bothered to check me over.

MrsRaincloud · 29/06/2016 11:12

Gowland12 - I feel the same way as you do... I know I'm reviving an old thread but I just had to post after looking up lletz and google leading me here. I lost my son in April this year at 20 weeks. I was unaware of the connection between lletz and issues with pregnancy. My consultant knew I had a cone biopsy and I 'happened' to read something about incompetent cervix. If I hadn't then I would have had no clue that I had issues. I was scanned at 16 weeks and told my cervix was 25mm which is on the borderline and that I would be scanned at 24 weeks to measure it again. I only made it to 20 before it dilated :(
The fact that you have to miscarry in order for something to be done with cervical issues is disgusting. This has broken me as a person...and all for the sake of a stitch being placed in my cervix.

I too am worried about this. I'm 8 weeks pregnant and luckily got my booking appointment on Friday. I'm 39 with my second pregnancy but that was 19 years ago!!!

I have had 2 LLETZ treatments. The most recent one was 3 years ago. I was hoping for a home birth as I have a massive phobia of hospitals! And I hated feeling so out of control being in hospital all those years ago.

Has anyone had a home birth after 2 LLETZ treatments?

Battenburg1978 · 29/06/2016 19:30

I'm so sorry for your lossesFlowers

I have had one LLETZ in 2011 and am now 16 weeks - I remember the consultant saying at my checkup following the LLETZ 'oh it's healed well and shouldn't pose any problems for childbirth' when absolutely nothing had been said about any risks before I had the treatment!!! It's a bit late to tell me the risks afterwards!

I've been referred to the prem clinic next week for an internal scan to check the cervix so am hoping everything will be ok. I think it's awful that potential risks aren't discussed pre-treatment and am thankful my midwife was onto it. Definitely push for the scan x

Jadek1990 · 11/07/2016 23:05

Sorry lady's for bring up an old post I'm the same as Mrs raincloud I had to post my experience, I only had one lletZ treatment in October of 2015 I did ask if it would effect my chances of getting pregnant she said no, she failed to mention it could cause complications, I had such a well pregnancy no clue that my cervix would give way. My midwife did refer me to a consultant about 16 weeks they then wanted to check my cervix to see if I would need a c-section incase my cervix didn't open still no mention of going into early labour that appointment was booked for 4th July sadly I started to lose my little boy on the 3rd July I was away in London and ended up in hospital they tryed to do a rescue stitch which didn't work as I was to far gone, I was 20+4 weeks when I gave birth to our little boy on 5th July he was perfect just so small, all the dr and widwifes said it was due to my cervix. No other complications. We are trying not to be angry but if only they had checked my cervix earlier our little boy most properly would still be cooking. It makes me angry all the threads I have read since my miscarriage why are we not getting check earlier in our pregnancy, the surgeon who tryed to do a rescue stitch has said my next pregnancy I need to be stitched by 14 weeks I'm so hoping that once I'll have that I hope to have a normal pregnancy even if I have to bed rest for 6months. Please please push if u are concerned if only I knew we would of pushed it. We will push next time I am considering going private to see the state of my cervix as I have no faith in my hospital to do it. If anyone has similar experiences I am happy to speak about it as no one should have to lose a child, especially if u have had treatment to your cervix they should automatically monitor u closer. So sorry to here of your losses ladies xx

I know this is an old thread, but I just want to second what Jadek1990 said. I had a cone biopsy after cin3 pre cancerous cells. I got to go private through work and my surgeon repeatedly mentioned that even though his work was very conservative I should firmly push for an appointment at a premi clinic if I got pregnant by week 14. I did this, and got seen and as all looked good, was told I was to be monitored monthly. Then my premi doc went away and there would have been nearly a 3 month gap in between. The one thing I knew from my surgeon was as the baby grows this is the ultimate time to keep checking cervix length as its the biggest culprit of late miscarriage. My hospital were so unhelpful and said there was nothing they could do, so I coughed up £200 and got my original surgeon to refer me for a private check. All was fine thankfully but I was so mad I had to pay to actually get seen when I should have been seen. But I'd rather be pushy and reassured and a bit broke than suffer a devastating consequence of a shortened cervix.
