If you beleive one or two glasses of wine from time to time is ok in pregnancy, which I do (if I could drink it as often as a blue moon with this indigestion and sickness!), what do you think of having one manhattan?

I have had no alcohol since my birthday on 12th July, when I had one small glass of red.

I really would quite fancy a nice long manhattan. Pre-pregnancy I would relax with a nice glass of wine in this situation.

(for those who do not know, it is a shot of bourbon, a shot of vermouth and a splash of angustura bitters, but could even leave the bitters out)

WDYT?

Mrsjammi - i really do not think that as a one off its a big deal. If it was daily, maybe problematic, but not once.

No sounds like you enjoyed it!!! And why not!

I really enjoyed that drink. I think I might even have enjoyed it more than when I am not pg, because I have not had one for months and months and months!

I always used to drink more than I required of manhattans as they are sooo moreish. BUT, no matter how many DH and I have had, he always measures them properly!

And now, it has gone to my head sufficiently that I am yawning, so I am off to sleep it off

Thanks all, feel reassured that I can drink something I enjoy once in a while

Glad you enjoyed it!! I wouldn't hesitate. (Assuming I was past say 12 weeks and I'm not even sure this matters).

If it makes you that happy it must be good for you. And if its good for you its good for the baby

I find the thought of alcohol more attractive than the reality - the times I've thought 'I know, I'll have a wee chilled half glass of white as a treat' have usually resulted in me giving it to the bloke because I don't actually want it.

BlueChampagne · 23/07/2009 11:40

I'd go for it, on a full stomach with water on the side to make it last longer. Enjoy.

bubblesincambridge · 23/07/2009 16:04

Go for it. Just have one though!

Squarah · 23/07/2009 18:09

Ooh lovely. Can't wait till I fancy booze again - still around 11ish weeks and not remotely interested - I do miss the odd small glass of plonk/beer/g+t...

mrsjammi I probably had about the same at a wedding last year when I was 8 months with my DS - just cumulatively over the day - at the time I suddenly remembered I was also driving and then the baby guilt kicked in! Eek. But hey ho our mothers probably all got plastered and I suspect we're all bloody brilliant so I refuse to get too worked up about it!

I also tend to ignore most of the rules they give out in pregnancy as they're based on such a fractional chance of catching an obscure disease (am medical so cynicism endemic!).

Here's to liberal pregnancies!

I've got a realy powerful craving for cider -and am 39 weeks pregnant - but only the really cheap sort that comes in cans, not that posh stuff in bottles. Have one in fridge chilling at the moment and am hoping just the one will satisfy. Have decided if body tells me i NEED it then it would be medically wrong to deny urge. Take point about full stomach so will also have large bag of kettle chips.

mogend77 · 24/07/2009 10:44

Hope you enjoyed it! Realise I am later but (as it's Friday) am in agreement that it's the volume of alcohol not the drink that is relevant. Proper, accurate measures and make sure you're not dehydrated and I can see no reason why not.

Am, however, in the very relaxed about eating when pregnant camp.

Have just read this very happily in a break from packing for holiday to the part of France where it's impossible to avoid cheese, wine and foie gras. In RL only seem to know tee-total pg brigade. Feeling much happier now, thank you!

KnockedUpDelf · 24/07/2009 18:47

During my last pregnancy I can still remember the sweet sweet nectar of the one margerita I had a party, hadn't been drinking much before then certainly less than one a week (tasted like battery acid in anycase).

Have JUST (like a couple of hours ago) found out I am pregnant and DH is picking up a bottle of the most expensive champagne he can find on the way home. Going to have a glass and luuuuuuurve it .

SolidGoldBrass · 24/07/2009 18:53

I drank far more than one cocktail when PG and my DS is not just healthy but advanced for his age. It is pretty much impossible for one or two drinks to have any effect at all on a foetus - the teetotal-in-PG movement is about controlling women, not about health at all.

FattipuffsandThinnifers · 24/07/2009 19:12

Ooh this has made me feel so much better! I've been off wine a bit this pg, but have had a fair few beers. Haven't had anything for a few weeks so will feel totally at peace having a couple of glasses of wine tonight.

Knockedupdelf - congratulations!!

mogend77 · 24/07/2009 19:51

Yes congratulations! Enjoy your bubbles.

Gangle · 25/07/2009 22:34

I already know the answer to this but is it ok to have one glass if you are less than 3 months? I am only 4 weeks, pregnancy was unplanned, and gutted that I won't be able to have even one drink on my birthday next week.

brettgirl2 · 26/07/2009 09:47

Well Gangle, I didn't find out I was pg until 5 weeks. In fact it had so not occured to me that I had 1/2 (at least) of a bottle of wine the night before I realised period was late and I did the test.

I don't think my story is unusual, many don't find out for much longer. There is a chance that you won't want to drink in a week's time though because the thought of it made me heave once ms had set in!

mogend77 · 26/07/2009 13:38

Gangle - whilst I was much stricter in the first 3 months I did make the occasional exception both times (particularly if there were bubbles involved). If it were me, yes I'd have a glass on my birthday.

Another one, btw, with an early overindulgence story. I got a bfp very early but it was faint, then I had spotting. Have had lots of early mcs so I was sure I had lost it. Drank half a bottle of wine. Tested the next day - much stronger line. Ooops. More spotting (heavier the next day) - really didn't believe it anymore - drank again. Stronger line again the next day and no more spotting! Oooops indeed.
