I've only just found out that I'm pregnant... How soon do you need to tell you doctor?

You don't need to tell your doctor at all unless you have an underlying health problem and need to discuss medication etc. But you do need to make a 'booking appointment' with your midwife (who is the specialist in pregnancy). This usually takes place at 8-9 weeks, with a dating scan at 12 weeks. GPs like you to have an appointment with them as they get paid a significant amount of money for each pregnant woman on their caseload. The Depeartment of Health itself states that this initial appointment with a GP is not necessary and may delay access to specialist advice (i.e. a midwife). Most women don't need to see a doctor of any description throughout pregnancy and birth. The midwife and you can decide whether you want midwife led or shared care depending on your medical history and preferences. Congratulations. Exciting times!

I agree with reikizen - usually around 8/9 weeks. (I usually mooch along around 10/11 weeks and get told off). In our area, when you ring the surgery for an initial midwife appointment, they make you see the doctor first (who tells you things you already know about soft cheese and folic acid) then you are allowed to go to the desk and make a midwife appointment.
