Did anyone watch the C4 coverage last night? It was quite scary with them saying 11 pg women in Oz are in intensive care atm, some of them have had to have caesarians.

I went to the docs for a blood test this morning and some bloke came in and told the receptionist he had cold symptoms and needed to see a doctor he then said 'i dont think its swine flu' ....fucking arsehole, Im sat there 6 months pg, with ds 4.5, and this idiot cant even call to see if he should come in.
I dont think the message has been drilled home enough, or there are just some people who dont listen

I work for NHS too - am due in October, though I have a non-patient contact role. As bumpsoon says rule is if you are symptom free you come to work - the NHS would really fall apart if sick people, people caring for sick people, and people who wanted to hide away at home all stayed off work.

I'm wondering if I'll get the vaccine if I'm off on maty leave? Hope its just a case of going along to pharmacy with staff badge!

2 Countries can give different advice as the situation can be very different in those 2 countries?

To be fair, it's easy to accuse others of wanting to 'hide away at home' when you're working in a non-patient contact role. I wonder if you had to try, on a daily basis, to sit and smile and provide a good service to patients who cough and splutter into your face when you're pregnant in a pandemic, if you would then find it as easy to scoff at clinician's fears. Never minded when it was just me, but it's different when you're expecting.

Given that our board (full of people in non-patient contact roles) spent six weeks deliberating on what type of poster to put up to warn patients about Swine Flu before entering clinics, I'm not so sure that the NHS would actually fall apart with a few less bureaucrats.

Any idea what the pregnant population of frontline NHS is? Or that population categorised again into healthy pregnant ladies and those with underlying health conditions? Or those with disabilities? Would the whole NHS crumble and fall to its knees, I wonder, just because it took the health and welfare of its own staff seriously? Doubt it.

hi
I have 6 little ones and am 8.5 weeks pregnant,my youngest was brain damaged at birth and has loads of problems which means we spend a lot of time at various hospitals and dr,his imune system is low and picks up everything 10 x worse than his brothers and sisters.I also have a 6 year old with a heart condition so shes classified at high risk aswell.I know how dangerious a simple infection can be to someone who is ill and so would never put anyone else in danger.6 months ago my son was on treatment and if he caught chicken pox it could have killed him, shortly after it went round the school but some of the parents were trying to get their child to catch it and parading there little ones around.I think with some people if they dont think it will affect them directly they dont think of the concequences it can have on other people.

I had temp of 38 yesterday and had headache and slight cough. Was not bed ridden though. Could that be it. 11 wkd preg, was going round my sch and dd nursery so will be quite relieved if that was it.

bevlin · 22/07/2009 15:05

mrsbean78 I totally agree with you. I can't imagine what it must be like doing your job, pregnant with underlying health issues. I have always found people to be very very ignorant when it comes to flu/virus etc. I had Gladular fever (prob spelt wrong)when I was 15 and it left me very weak with a low immune system right into my early 20's. If some fanny came to work coughing, sneezing and telling us all they were dying, guaranteed it would floor me in bed for at least 3 weeks at a time to their 3 days of feeling bad. Since I had my son people have never ceased to amaze me. At 6 weeks old he had my sister in law come to visit, hold him then proceed to tell me she had been really ill with virus for weeks but was starting to feel better . Yes, he was extremely ill for 4 weeks and along with the reflux and colic, i remember his early days being hell because of it. Then there are the mum's who invite you round for lunch then proceed to tell you (while your DC is eating their DC's slobbery toy) that their DC has been 'so ill', 'up all night', 'it's been hell'. Ugh, if I had a pound for every time it has happened - thanks for sharing. If you dared say, do you mind warning me first if they are ill they look at you as if you said "do you mind if I take one of your kidneys"! Kids get colds and illnesses, that I can handle, but people tend to be a bit too thoughtless about others. The same thing is going to and is happening with swine flu, there's always the smart arses who like to be seen to shrug it off. They might think swine flu is nothing, maybe to a non pregnant person, fit and healthy it will be but some thought for others should be drummed into people more.
What do we know about this vaccine? Would you usually be happy to take on a vaccine pregnant? Especially one that has been thrown together last minute and NEVER taken by a pregnant person before. There was another link where they were discussing the ingredient - thirmosel (definitely spelt wrong, can't remember exact name)! It is an ingredient that has been linked with autism in other vaccines. It makes the vaccine cheaper (longer shelf life). You can demand the same vaccine without this ingredient but good luck with that. Vaccines provide drug company's and in turn, the goverment with a huge income so they must be rubbing their hands at the moment! I really don't want to scare people but even more so I don't want to see a whole generation of children being destroyed by a vaccine. Id approach that one with caution and look into the ingredients more. The actual list of ingredients are on a slip of paper in the box the vaccine comes in, the doctor can't refuse you to look at it. Go to your surgery, ask for it or a copy when it becomes available, take it home and google any you don't understand. That way you can be better informed as to what your fetus will be taking on rather than going in blind and trusting the drugs company's and goverment.
I think any PG woman reading this, if you can take maternity leave earlier, work from home, take the car or walk (early preg obviously), avoid the shops, get food shopping delivered online then do it, do anything to avoid it as much as possible. You can't recluse yourself, you have to pay the bills and we do have to carry on as normally as we can but avoid the risks. The goverment think economy first, the last thing they are going to do is advise pregnant woman to stay at home. We need to think of our family's and ourselves first and be as careful as possible. It might get worse but we don't want to be floating around a busy shopping centre before we hear about it! Roll on Harry Potter on DVD!!

I am just 6 wks pregnant and have a baby of almost 11 months. He was going to the nursery, but now with this SF I am starting to think if I should change his arrangement. I am working from home, used to go to visit companies far away (take the train/tube/train), but now I will be doing online meetings so I can avoid that. So I can have my baby at home and try to work when he sleeps, but I did that this week and I was really tired! if not, I am thinking of having a nanny maybe for 12 hours a week, distributed maybe in 3 days, and then try to do some more work when he sleeps (he is having longer naps now, 2 hours!)... I am not sure if I am too worried, but I am from Argentina, that they are in their winter season, and they advise pregnant women not to go to work, to work from home, and they've closed schools for two extra weeks to try to cut the pandemic. The other day one of this London Universities wrote a paper that was good to maybe close schools to avoid 40/50% of infections. I am thinking that if from now until mid winter at least the risk of swine flu will be here (I am due in mid-March), and then I do not know if I have the money to send the two kids to nursery, I might try to get a nanny that will take care of both of them in the future.... anyways, am I being too paranoid??

1mum1 · 01/08/2009 22:12

I was wandering around looking for prams yesterday and today with a tissue over my face. I tried to look casual with it but you just can't help worry a bit can you? If they said this winter that they advised pg women to where a mask I think I would be releived to be able to do so! It's a shame because you want to be out enjoying shopping for things. For many shopping needs though - thank goodness for internet shopping! I've also been thinking about not kissing relatives when I meet up with them! Now surely that is a paranoid thought too far!?

dal21 · 02/08/2009 09:44

I think I am the odd one out here. Yes the news article from australia is awful news. God be with the women and their LO's

But it doesnt put the number into perspective. How many women are currently pregnant out there? So six women are unwell, a further 2 in ITU after giving birth. But what % of pregnant women has this affected?
2%, 1%, even less than 1%?

I know the information is conflicting and difficult to decipher, but I would honestly say we need to keep this in perspective for the moment. This is going to get worse when our autumn/ winter comes, am not going into hibernation now!
