Any cold cuts are a risk (even if a very small one), so the solution is either cooked it (had plenty of prosciutto and chorizo on my pizza last night), or freeze it for at least 4 days and then it is safe to enjoy cold.

Inpup you may be right about not overdoing with the precautions but comparison to the third world is inappropriate in my opinion, especially taking into account the death rate of babies and much lower life expectancy due to lack of proper foods and women having to eat what's available in order not to starve.

fattycow · 21/01/2015 19:08

No 'raw' hams such as parma, Coburger, Schwarzwalder Schinken, etc. No 'dry' sausages such as chorizo and salami. The thing is that there could be bacteria in there that can make mum seriously ill and being that ill could affect the baby.

Inpup · 21/01/2015 19:29

I wasn't talking about countries affected by famine or food shortages.

My point was cultural diet which is very different from 'no choice'.

Pico2 · 21/01/2015 19:36

I think you could drive yourself mad following the guidelines for every country. I'd just follow the ones for the country you live in.

Zahrah5 · 21/01/2015 21:06

I read if you freeze all these types of meats for 4 days then it will kill any bacterias in it.

I would not go actively pursuing to eat any of the doubtful things but if they happened to be in house I would eat them after being frozen.

I dont think it is tragedy to give up on eating any of these things, its only temporary and goes quickly.

The son of a famous spanish couple was born diseable because the mum ate blue cheese.
In Spain all the pregnan woman are tested for toxoplasmosis, for diabetes.

I believe in the UK they advise against eating all cured meats.

That is the one thing I am actually missing in pregnancy so far... I do love my cured meats. Prosciutto especially!

Peaplant20 · 02/07/2021 12:54

Chorizo is listed as one of the foods to ‘be careful with’ on the NHS website so you’re right to be wondering! It’s all very well saying oh I had it and I was fine, the risk is small yes, but it’s not exactly hard to avoid chorizo so I would just avoid it as why take the risk? So it just depends how careful you want to be! And it’s not like it’s a huge list of foods to avoid. If you want to eat it just cook it and it takes the risk away unless you’re sure it’s already been cooked. Going ‘over the top’ to me would be avoiding foods that aren’t listed on the NHS website to avoid but on page 10 of Google on a random website!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 02/07/2021 12:57

since when is parma ham not allowed?
I ate it during several pgs and corizo too.

these are cured meats. I don't get the issue

you could always just chop thinly & fry them

dementedpixie · 02/07/2021 13:03

Cured meats are ok if cooked or if frozen for a few days before eating.

Touloser · 02/07/2021 13:06

AllSinging · 02/07/2021 13:16

I know that this is an old thread that has been brought back but I had a nosey and since when can we not eat peanut butter!? That’s not the current guidance is it? That’s my current go to!

dementedpixie · 02/07/2021 13:36

Peanut butter is fine to eat unless you are allergic to peanuts
