Gone off tea & coffee ~ terrible headaches

Cyndii · 11/05/2005 10:21

I've totally gone off tea as the taste is disgusting (usually would drink 8 mugs per day) & coffee makes me sick (usually drink 1-2 mugs per day)

So I have not drank coffee in over 2 weeks and tea in over 1. I'm 11 weeks pregnant

However, for the past two days I've terrible headaches but I didn't think I'd have them this long after stopping to drink tea/coffee. Any suggestions?

I was exactly the same. In fact I was disgusted by tea well before I even realised I was pregnant (I don't drink coffee). Although I think it's safe to take paracetamol during pregnancy (someone else please advise) I chose not to. The only thing I found which helped was drinking cocacola - I guess it was the caffeine in it. Try it, it might work for you too!

I've been told by my GP & MW that normal strength, normal dose paracetamol are fine when you're pregnant, but don't go overboard on them. Godsend at the moment cos I've got THE most awful cold and can't take any time off work at the mo cos of deadlines, crises & overwork

Hi Cyndii

I'm 29 weeks pregnant and was the same as you completely off tea (in early pregnancy)and normally I can't get enough of it! I too had dreadful headaches (you can take a naural remedy for this called 4head - you rub it along your forehead when you feel the beginnings of a headache - it was recommended here on mumsnet as a safe natural option if you didn't want to take paracetamol. It worked for me). My DH had a good point when I couldn't drink tea and was having headaches that I was probably getting a bit dehydrated. You could try herbal teas. (before I was pregnant I thought drinking herbal tea was like talking to yourself!) I love the Twinings ones particularly strawbery and mango and orange and mango and more recently cammomile and spearmint! I'll probably go off them once baby arrives! If it's any consolation after 4 months once the sickness had subsided I was quite happy to drink tea again. I limit myself to 2-3 cups per day and drink water, decaf tea and a selection of herbal teas now and it seems to do the trick! The cammomile and spearmint one helps with heartburn too!

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy and congratulations! Is this your first baby? I'm on my second!

Hi I am 26 weeks and did suffer with terrible headaches up until about week 18-20. Although I was prone to headaches pre pregnancy.

My GP said it was hormonal and didnt really offer any advice apart from that I could take paracetemols. I found drinking loads of water could help the headache, if I 'caught it' early. Although I was reluctant to take paracetemols they are very safe apparently.

I hope the headaches ease, mine did!

Thank you ladies for the great advice.

I'm drinking lemon and hot water when I would normally drink tea today and it seems to be working ~ no killer headache yet TG!

webwoman05 ~ I think your DH might just be right my own DH said that to me this morning so that's why I'm trying the lemon & water. Might buy a few herbal teas too as an alternative.

I might leave the coke as I think that if I get through these headaches & the caffeine is out of my system it's my chance to really cut back.

webwoman05 it's my second pregnancy too. My ds is 3 yr & 9 months; but with him I didn't have any hassles only tiredness but this time round, I've tiredness, sick (but haven't been since Sunday which is great) headaches off tea etc weird maybe it's a girl but I won't start thinking that. Don't honestly care which sex.

Thanks ladies ~ go now & put on the kettle for my wilting lemon

Glad the suggestions might be of some help Cyndii. Hope the headaches clear up soon (and the sickness!).

My ds1 is 4 yrs and 4 months and I know that I am expecting another boy. Both pregnancies were totally different. I had no sickness with DS1, felt great and apart from him arriving one month early (due to a placental abruption), I had in general a good pregnancy (up until obviously his early arrival), this time round I have been as sick as a pig (!) and so knackered. I put it down to perhaps old age (mine!) and running about after a very boisterous 4 year old! I was convinced this one might be a girl but I had a CVS so I know he's defo a boy! I suppose each pregnancy is different!

Thanks webwoman feel so much better the lemon water is doing the trick and drinking my normal amounts of water too so I'd say I was dehydrated.

So that's my theory of this one being a girl gone out the window! I'm going to leave it for a surprise..............

Don't be afraid to pop a paracetamol or two. Won't harm the baby.

I went completely off coffee and tea - I'm now 8 weeks pregnant - but didn't get any w/drawal headaches as I was only drinking a couple of cups a day as it was.
