Is there any point in seeing the GP - help resolve an argument between DH, my friend and I...

I am 8 weeks tomorrow and I feel rough

So far today I woke at 2am, vomited, woke at 5am, vomited & runs, woke at 7am, vomited as getting DS brekkie because of opening the fridge (smell). Had a shower (vomited in it). Did preschool run which nearly killed me. Came home and slept for 2 hours. Neighbour picked up DS, brought him home - I vomited whilst getting his lunch. I felt so light-headed I ended up calling another friend who is here now. I have been sick once more this afternoon but to be honest the nausea hasn't stopped. From the last few days experience I will carry on like this till about 9pm when I might feel human for about an hour. BUT I am managing to eat (I don't want to but I'm forcing myself), and drink.

DH and friend who is here this afternoon are adamant I should call the doctor. The doctor on Fri (when I went to inform I was pg) said they will only prescribe something if I become dehydrated. I'm sure I'm not dehydrated (managing to wee, cry, etc).

The problem is what can we do? How the hell do I cope with my 3 year old? We can't use friends everyday and we have no family willing to help, or close enough. I had MS with DS but it was nothing like this bad this early.

So firstly - who's right on whether it's worth going to the doctor?

And secondly, how do I do this with a child in tow?

Weegle when's your due date? From last period 21st jan, but had early scan fri (that's another thread) which put me 4 days ahead. Had to get dp to help cook, as vomited at sight of potatoes.

I hope you get some help, our only help would be mil but that's not really an option so I know what you mean about your mum.

Cloudy lemonade lollies are good too. Very lemony. Have permanent seaband. Was very sick with dd too, all coming back to me.

Hope they can give you something. xx

thank you so much everyone for your messages, it's really made me feel less miserable

Well overnight I have come out with an horrific cold which has reignited an old chest infection - maybe that's what made me so bad yesterday? DH is here until taking DS to preschool, also going to ring the doctor and make an appointment. Then friends are coming to pick DS up from preschool and entertain him for the afternoon so I don't have to worry about today at least. DH has also organised for another friend to do tomorrow. I hate needing help like this but as DH says needs must. That buys us a little time to get something better organised from next week.

Unfortunately we don't live in a Homestart area.

quirkychick I'm not 100% sure of my EDD - my book says 22nd Jan, my GP said 20th Jan. I almost certainly will deliver before then as it'll be a planned CS following complications last time. Honestly, pregnancy and I really don't see eye to eye!

Go to the GP (ask for an urgent appt) and demand to be put under a consultants care. I've done this for each of my 4 hG pregnancies. Under a consultant you get the best care and best meds. Ondansetron is the only thing that stope my vomitting - it is a miracle drug. But its usually only under a consultants care that you can get it.

I have literally just got back from GP - which in itself was a nightmare and vomited on the way, in the loo there and half way through the appointment - made my point though. Anyway my doctor was lurvely and he's prescribed something (can't remember it's name, DH just gone to get it - something teocate?). He said if no improvement by Saturday I am to ring out of hours docs as by then there could be risk of dehydration and there are other drugs they can try it's just a case of finding one that works for me. I feel so relieved I'm crying! I was really worried he wouldn't take me seriously but he said "there's no doubting you're clearly very unwell, let's get on top of this" so I feel so much better just that he actually took me seriously.

Great! But if meds don't work, keep asking for ONDANSETRON its the best one but usually only prescribed by consultants. If you end up on a drip in hospital then you'll be put under a consultants care, and, again, ask for that.

Weegle · 11/06/2009 11:59

thank you - will remember that in case. Fingers crossed these work - PLEASE let these work...

I'm pleased to hear that you've been to see the doc and that he was supportive to you. I hope the meds work and quickly, too!

mummygogo · 11/06/2009 18:36

Hi Weegle, glad you went to the doctor. If you were one of my friends I wouldnt mind a bit you calling on me for support. Thats what your friends are for so dont feel bad about asking. Hope the sickness improves, my low point when I was preggars recently was chundering outside dds nursery first thing in the morning. No one knew I was up the duff and I just looked like some alchie, I was so embarassed

quirkychick · 11/06/2009 18:49

Weegle glad you have been to the doctor! Yes we have almost identical due(ish) dates. I too will probably have cs as am "high risk" and had complications last time and would like not to this time. I know what you mean about pg, some people seem to sail through, not me.

I hope the new medicine does the trick. ms is horrible, although I have been much less sick today.

Keep well.

alison6692 · 11/06/2009 19:24

Great news. I had terrible sickness with my little girl.. urgh. I had an anti-sickness too which did really help.

I also used vitamin B6 which I found brilliant first time round although not so much with this pregnancy. You need to check with your MW that she is happy for you take this. Banana's are high in B6 I used to find eating them helpful too.

Also tiredness makes your pregnancy soo much worse. I would day get signed off work if you are working as this will make you feel more human and try and get as many friends and family to help out. Rest will help you enjoy your time with your daughter and feel less sick.

Get well soon x

PacificDogwood · 11/06/2009 21:54

Weegle, I hope you feel better v v soon.

You may have been given Stemetil/Prochlorperazine or Maxalon/Metoclopramide which are both commonly used in pregnancy.

Ondansetron is usually used for nausea after chemo or similar and there are less data available on its safety in pregnancy so preferred option is to stick to one of the older and well researched meds. Having said that, Ondansetron (and some others like it) is VERY effective and certainly better than continued vomiting/hospital admission etc.

And, yes, there is good evidence that bad sickness in pregnancy (much as it is a sign of an ongoing pregnancy ) is also linked to tiredness and stress, so be kind to yourself if you at all can.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 11/06/2009 22:09

Hope the meds work for you. xx

Weegle · 12/06/2009 08:09

Thank you everyone, I can't tell you how nice it is to have this virtual support!

Well I took another pill last night and they have really helped me to sleep. It's been just fantastic to sleep uninterrupted without vomiting. I've felt quite queasy so far this morning but I've just eaten some brekkie and feel better for that. Fingers crossed I'll see today if these pills are working - they are Promethazine.

Wow, I might actually achieve having a shower today - that would be a milestone...

Thanks for the update Weegle. How have you been since you last posted?

Weegle · 13/06/2009 20:46

well a million times better! Still really quite nauseous, but I was only sick twice yesterday, and only once so far today... definitely keeping fluids in now. I even went out for the day today - admittedly had to stay sitting the whole time, but considering I was still bedbound yesterday I think that's quite a turn around. So fingers crossed these pills are doing the trick.
