I'm afraid it's from the same school of parenting as 'flashing lights on the Postman Pat ride outside the Post Office mean that it's broken. They're flashing to let the repair man know'.

I'm not really a horrible parent, but ds is 2 and we'd never get anywhere . He does get lots of treats when he's well behaved, honest!

psychomum5 · 06/06/2009 20:23

pavlov, without wanting to take the glow away from the hug about the scoop icecream (thrilled), but McD's shakes gave my DH and DS1 dodgy tummys last week when we came home from hols.

we went thru the drive thru on the way home, and asked for shakes (as we didn;t want them having coke due to us needing them to sleep), but got told no ice-cream.

"fine" we said, we don;t want the ice-cream anyway.

as they gave us the shakes tho, the guy was being told not to sell anymore as the machine was not working properly.

anyhoo.......DH and DS1 slurped half of their before deciding they tasted really odd and taking them back (no-one else had thier before DH said not to, and I am allergic anyway), and then that night they were both really poorly!!

soooooooooooooo

McD's shakes are really not recommended IMO )altho many will shoot me for saying they might have been before)

pavlovthecat · 06/06/2009 21:11

psychomum - eeeeeew [yuck face]

psychomum5 · 06/06/2009 21:13

yup, yuck.

thankfully both are of the ages where they don;t need help with said dodgy bums

i was going to post on food restirctions in pregnancy about my ice cream incident yesterday but this is the specific thread

i queued for nearly 20 mins outside thorntons yesterday for ice creams and they refused to sell me ice cream as i'm pregnant and made me take a bloody sorbet instead! i was so shocked and annoyed and started to insist it was my choice to eat ice cream but i felt suddenly embarressed by their attitude as it made me seem reckless about my unborn's safety etc and everyone in the queue started paying attention so i took the sorbet instead and sulked off..

i eat ice cream all the time at home and buy magnum's but not mr whippy ice creams just in case

funtimewincies · 07/06/2009 11:12

Mamamila - how !

Why suddenly it's eveyone's business to police our pregnancies. I haven't noticed any shops refusing to sell fags to pregnant ladies, but we're the devil's own if we dare to have prawns!

A lot of it is 'I've heard that you're not supposed to have this' rather than any real knowledge about the subject.

I'd have said very loudly, "I'm only at risk if your ice cream is made from unpasturised milk and eggs and hens not vaccinated against salmonella. Is your ice cream like that? If so than all the children in this queue are at risk" and hoped to see their business disappear.

I might start carrying the FSA list of 'things you can eat' around with me in my handbag!

bettyjack · 07/06/2009 15:30

Mmmmm, with my last 2 pregancies I ate Mr Whippy the whole way through...we had a van that came round the close every evening....so I prop had a whippy with nuts about 3 times a week! lol

Being honest I am a firm believer in eat what you like (although I wouldnt eat Pate), I ate sushi (what do you think they eat in Japan?) Nuts, as I believe that if you eat nuts then your child will automatically be ok with them....although non of my family has any history of nut allergy so I felt better eating them! Egg as long as I knew where it came from etc etc.

Both my children have never really been ill have had no allergies and dont suffer from anything. They eat & try everything...including Grass or a bit of soil if outside playing! lol

I feel it build up there immune system early and allows their body to get used to different foods.

I think the list of what you cant eat has increased so much that you wonder what do you think our parents did! lol

I think if you eat all in moderation it is better than cutting it out altogether...I personally think this creates allergies in some cases since the body tries to fight foreign bodies.

Please remember that this is only my opinion and I am in no way saying that this is the right way and that people that are very strict about what they eat are are wrong.
Everyones pregnancy/circumstances are different.

I just feel this works for me.

on a more serious note im after some advice - i had hormone tests last week and results showed that although the levels were high, they weren't quite doubling (which is what they look for in early pregnancy)

i have to go back tomorrow morning for more blood tests but im wondering whether i should bother or whether i should just wait until my scan on tues 16th to see if everything ok? hormone tests aren't an exact science and im wondering if they are just causing me unecessary worry...or would i be silly not to go?

winjy you are right. No strawberry cheescake they had none in sainsburys can you beleive that ? I expect all the pregnant women have bought it already so DH bought me summer fruits and cream carte d'or. I guess that will have to do, but I was really looking forward to having the bits of cheesecake. He called me but the shop had just shut and there was no time to make him walk along reading everything they had until there was one that closely matched it. I told him to just pick one. He tried.

PavlovtheCat · 07/06/2009 18:43

How far are you? When would they get the results back from the bloodtest? Would it be instant? If so, might be worth going back as the early scans can sometimes show a small baby but not necessarily why. I personally would, but thats because I am very nosy and impatient, and want things done 'now'. I am sure its nothing to worry about, in early pregnancy it is all based on ifs and buts as its so early to be able to tell much.

manyhatson · 07/06/2009 18:45

Ice cream has a lot of protein in it and therefore is essential in pregnancy

winjy · 07/06/2009 18:52

well the results came back instatnly friday...they were done in the morning and doc phoned me at 6pm to give me results....dates say im 7 weeks but scan shows 5 weeks which is why tests are being done. i too am nosy and impatient but wonder if im worrying myself about nothing...i spoke to someone who had a normal pregnancy after her hormone levels were no where near double. and like u say, this early its more guesswork than fact. think i prob will go as curiousity will get the better of me

manyhatson thanks for the crutial update on the essential protein in ice cream, must eat more now.

It is really common for dates this early to show under the correct date like this. Its because they are talking about millimeters, its easy for the measurements to be out. Same with the hormones.

Can you wait until tuesday? Will they need to do hormone test again on tuesday anyway if you wait?

PavlovtheCat · 07/06/2009 19:41

Do does the scan date match the hormones for that estimate? ie do they match the 5 weeks? Is there any chance you could be a touch out with the dates? And don't forget the dates, at this stage are based on 28 day ovulation and taken from LMP. cycles are not always 28 days, not by a long shot. These are all variables that make the dating at this stage so difficult.

funtimewincies · 07/06/2009 19:42

Although I don't think for one minute that you're at risk winjy and am certainly not trying to scare you, I'd get another set of bloods done if offered. I had an ectopic and funny hormone results were the first indication of something wrong. Mine were barely rising, whereas yours are so again I'm not trying to scare you. If they're borderline again, they might bring the scan forward so it might be useful for that reason.

PavlovtheCat · 07/06/2009 19:43

Oh I thought you meant this tuesday! Not tuesday 16th, misread, apologies - I agree, get them done tomorrow if offered.

winjy · 07/06/2009 20:45

thanks guys...im definitely gonna go in the morning now...had period like cramps today, feel as if im gonna come on, been knicker checking all day!! is this what implantaion pains feel like?
pavlovthecat they haven't given me exact hormone results she just said they're not quite doubling so i dont know if they match the dates...il have to ask her tomorrow. also got a dodgy tummy, not sure if its pregnancy related or just coz im so worried and anxious...my boobs are unbearably sore tho today which im taking as a positive sign...and i keep getting indigestion which doc said is common in early preg too...im doing my own head in going through things over and over in my head...i definitely was not built for this waiting game!!

Hope it went well today and you've got some answers to your questions .

winjy · 08/06/2009 21:14

i had my bloods this morning, doc promised she's ring me to let me know results and she hasnt im so annoyed - she knows how worried i am arrrggghhhh

so i still have no answers as of yet, will have to ring for an appointment in the morning, hopefully il get my answers then and hopefully they'll be the ones im after

how are u? sorry to be so self indulgent...hard to think about much else when im so worried...

OP posts:
funtimewincies · 09/06/2009 13:37

It's so annoying when that happens and it's impossible to think of anything else. Completely natural and not at all self-indulgent.

I'm fine thanks, hoping to hear a heartbeat at an appointment tomorrow, the dating scan seems so long ago now.

winjy · 09/06/2009 16:21

fingers crossed for you for tomorrow xx
