Maternity clothes help and advice please

Not in the UK at the moment and where I am maternity clothes seem to be either hideous or hideously expensive, so please can you tell me the UK shops that sell maternity clothes where I can buy online and send to my sis.
Last pregnancy I felt really frumpy and really not attractive and I think it really affected me so this time I really want to make a huge effort and look better this time.
Also on the subject my sis in law suggest just buying stretchy normal clothes - is this a good idea or doomed to failure.
Any advice from you fashionable people appreciated.

Timmette - H&M do a maternity range. Hema do maternity and nursing bras. Premaman and C&A also do maternity - C&A is cheap.

COngratulations on your pregnancy

timmette · 02/06/2009 09:02

Hi Belgo thanks for that. All I had found so far was little boutique stores with either ugly clothes or very very nice but expensive clothes and with a toddler with permanently grubby fingers I was hoping for something in between.
Will take a trip into town at the weekend and have a browse.

yes stay away from boutiques, the people working in belgian boutiques aren't known for their friendliness

cairnterrier · 02/06/2009 09:39

Hi Timmette

Have not actually bought any maternity wear myself but am keeping an eye on jojomamanbebe as they seem to have some nice stuff and quite reasonable. They come up very easily under a google search. There are a few others out there, I did a google search for them.

Jojomamanbebe were very good at getting back to me about prices for shipping outside the UK.

Hope this helps. x

cairnterrier · 02/06/2009 09:41

Sorry, Timmette, should have explained that have not bought anything as yet as trying to justify the shipping costs as we return to the UK when I'll be 17 weeks so it's trying to hold my stomach in before then :-)

timmette · 02/06/2009 09:45

Hi Cairnterrier thanks will look at them I am not worried about the postage as will get it posted to my sis in London and she can get it here for me.
I am not as far along as you are but have gained 1.5 kgs and everything is too tight - how is this possible .

If it helps you both, I was living outside of UK when was first pregnant with DS1 and moved back when I was 20 weeks. I managed to (just) survive without maternity clothes until I came back - same situation lots of expensive boutique shops where I was plus wrong season. I got a friend to send over one of those bump bands which helped with my trousers.

Good luck with your pregnancies!

orangina · 02/06/2009 10:18

I thought topshop pregnancy wear was good, I lived in their jeans and t shirts. You can buy it online here. I wore the eva jeans (bootcut) and the baxter (skinny). They also do a good value bump band.

orangina · 02/06/2009 10:18

Might also be worth trying ebay.

cairnterrier · 02/06/2009 10:36

Hi timmette

I'm 10 1/2 weeks a the moment. My jeans are okay in the morning but a little snug in the evening! Some of my previously nicely fitting shirts are now on the pornographic boobs popping out side . Should have mentioned that jojo (etc, can't be bothered to type it all out again!) have 10% off via the discounts option at the top of the page. There are some other maternity websites there, some with hair raising prices :-) good luck, can you let me know if you find any other good websites?

timmette · 02/06/2009 10:43

Hi Cairnterrier ok just a week or so behind you lol.
Will let you know what I find.
I did find one website and almost fainted at the prices .
mumofoliver will have a look at bumpbands but don't think they will help my expanding chest .
orangina have bought a few things from ebay it's a good idea will have a look at topshop.
And thanks

I have bought some bits from www.funmum.com, prices are cheaper than most but found that their fit was bit hit & miss so sent as much back as I kept. The bits i kept I have lived in!

I also really like New look for quality, fit and price although they dont seem to have anything I like at the moment.

However, i pretty much live in bits from primark, drawstring linen type trousers, long smock tops - and I can carry on wearing for a while afterwards.

M&S do some great bootleg trousers in a stretchy material, pull on style that I lived in for work, they were so stretchy just went one size up from normal & they still sat over bump (not under like most trousers)

Hi timmette

Gap do maternity and some of it is quite nice and well cut and not too expensive, good for basics. They don't sell online outrrside of the USA but I'm sure there must be a Gap where you are.

timmette · 02/06/2009 11:04

MrsWee if only there is no gap here . Will send my sis off shopping there for me - I used to get lots of clothes there didn't know they did maternity so thanks for the tip.

www.yummymummymaternity.co.uk/

This place do online shopping and delivery charges seem reasonable!

cairnterrier · 02/06/2009 11:42

MrsWee, I second Timmette on that! I miss Gap soooooo much

duzida · 02/06/2009 12:15

Vertbaudet jeans are suprisingly nice - don't look that good on the website, but I just got given some handmedown ones from last year, and I love them, and would definitely buy more in future pregnancies.

As for non-maternity stretchy clothes, might be worth browsing Uniqlo and American Apparel sites for tops, leggings and stretchy dresses and skirts, I'm 7 months and a lot of stuff fits in the larger sizes. I also thought it might be doomed to failure and I would be arrested for impersonating (badly) a 20 year old, but there's a lot of good stuff there, and you don't have to dress top to toe in it. I've also found Uniqlo stuff perfect for sleeping in since my normal pyjamas/whatever no longer fit, and my normal t-shirts no longer cover my tummy.

Someone mentioned on MN a while back that Uniqlo are doing bra-tank tops at the moment - tank tops with rather unattractive bra insert in them. Excellent for sleeping in if you're feeling a bit bigger or sorer than usual.

Finally, I found a really nice (but expensive) non-maternity brand, Dutch company called Humanoid, that do dresses and tops that you can get away with buying normal size for, your tummy will fit, and it will still fit/look good when you're no longer pregnant. It looks like you can't order direct from website, but worth looking at in shops in your city (should be listed at www.humanoid.nl). In London, they're stocked by Folk in Lamb's Conduit Street - looks like a silly boutique (and is expensive) but amazingly the staff are human and extremely kind and friendly. I needed something for a wedding, and it just looked better on me than the wrap dresses that all the maternity wear companies seem to specialise in - nothing wrong with wrap dresses, it's me that looks horrible in them.

timmette · 02/06/2009 12:38

Duzida - I am 30 minutes from the Dutch border so will check that out will also ask sis in law who is Dutch.
Never heard of Uniglo or American Apparel feeling a bit old now - lol

Blooming Marvellous have an offer on at the moment 3 for 2 on maternity tops, very basic but nice things. They ship internationally as well.

AppleAndBlackberry · 02/06/2009 13:39

I have used Next, New Look and Mothercare for online shopping. Don't just get stretchy non-maternity clothes unless you know you're not going to get very big - maternity clothes look much nicer (though you don't need maternity pants).

mickeyj · 02/06/2009 14:04

You could try www.biglittletrading.co.uk

They sell new and nearly new maternity and baby clothes at reasonable prices - great for the basics

hackneybird · 02/06/2009 14:23

asos.com are excellent for maternity stuff.

I also second Top Shop and New Look. And Uniqlo too for when you can get to one, they do lots of t-shirts, long and short sleeved, for 4.99 each in great colours.

Stokey · 03/06/2009 08:41

I found this site that has links to some other sites including New look quite useful

www.funkybumpmaternity.com/

pippa251 · 03/06/2009 08:46

newlook is really cheap and suprisingly nice, peacocks also do maternity range, I decided regarding vest tops to jus streatch my matalan ones and buy new when baby is here as they are far cheaper than maternity ones.
