Early pregnancy health post MC- Shall I take some gentle exercise?

I just found out I'm pregnant again following a MMC at 10 weeks 39 days ago. Gulp, trauma, too soon, what if it happens again etc etc.

Anyhow last time I was pregnant I didn't do any exercise at all but still lost it (hence doubt very much exercise is a factor) and since the MMC I have been lying on the sofa mainlining boxes of chocolate and bottles of wine (obviously stopped that now!). I feel very very unhealthy since basically its about 4 months since I did any exercise and am thinking that it would probably do me some good but then am also worried its not a good idea as its still so early. I'm talking about maybe doing some gentle wii fit exercises- maybe the step aerobics (which is very low impact), some yoga, possibly some gentle boxing but nothing too stenuous or abdominal. Is it a good idea?
Am going to be mainlining fruit and veg now too and back on the folic acid (which didn't start til today as prior to this I couldn't face taking anything "pregnancy" related but obviously now things have changed a bit.

So sorry about your loss. Even low impact aerobics can have an effect if your not used to them. I am a very active girl and spoke of this in depth with my gp. He said to continue anything my body is already trained to do, but not to start any new exercises as these could have an adverse effect on my body. On ds1 however everyone told me to stop exercising which actually made me very ill. I would recommend swimming or brisk walking. If you have your heart set on aerobics or yoga then I would go to a pregnancy exercise class. There will be a teacher there who will know exactly what exercises are safe.

Thandeka · 27/05/2009 10:06

Swimming is a good idea think will root out my cozzie.

The step aerobics on wii fit is much like brisk walking cept in your living room- you seriously don't break a sweat doing it - but maybe will leave the yoga and boxing alone for time being.

I just feel I need to get my body moving again especially if this pregnancy actually works out as I need the strentgh and stamina for labour- so many studies show the fitter you are the better labour you have!

I would say better pg too on first as I said stopped exercising spent most bed bound or in hospital. This pg I have had no major problems beside the normal. I hope it all goes well for you. I envisioned the step aerobics as being like my dance mat which sadly I had to stop. docs orders but then I do the advanced levels he said the lower levels would be fine.

Thandeka · 27/05/2009 11:46

Heck dance mat I would tie myself in knots on and trip over.

Wii fit step is hilariously slow- the music is all dum dum der der dum dum so you have to keep time.

If I didnt have the plumber coming over I would get on it now.

Thandeka so sorry to hear about your MMC. I remember seeing you on the conception boards a while ago. It's such a shocker isn't it. I went through the same at 11 weeks back in December and am now preg again so very much in the same 'place' as you right now.

I also regret not having got fitter beforehand but it's true that now is not the time to start anything new.

I echo the brisk walking and swimming advice - if you're up to it. I am suffering from pretty bad MS so not doing anything much more than unwrapping ice lollies but do want to start doing something once i'm up to it.

Wishing you all the best for this pregnancy xx

Hi Sifuentes - heres to both of us working out okay this time. Hope you feel up to more soon.

Just did a gentle 24 mins on the wii fit and i feel so much better now- just getting my body moving is a start. It is scary quite how unfit I am but I really didn't break a sweat and my heartrate will only have been slightly elevated so much the same as a brisk walk really. Am going to try and do that 3 times a week and gently build up my stamina and build in swimming etc. Once (if) I get past the dreaded 12 week stage I may start aqua aerobics (pregnancy suitable ones of course!) as I read a study that found women who did aqua aerobics three times a week had very short easy labours!

Hi Thandeka. So sorry to hear of your loss but very happy to hear of recent BFP! I also had an MMC at 10 weeks (late Jan/early Feb) and have just got a BFP again.

I am a nervous wreck and now its worse because I can't drink.

Would you like to be my friend?

Tamlin · 27/05/2009 17:15

Think I was in much your shoes when got my latest BFP - waited one cycle after MMC and got pregnant again, and then wished I hadn't spent all four weeks crying and drinking red wine and eating chocolate. Ahem.

Do you have a heartrate monitor..? I find they're terrific for exercising while pregnant - your heartrate goes up almost immediately in pregnancy (I was startled at how much higher it was, just at five weeks), but the monitor lets you know when you're overdoing things...

Thandeka · 27/05/2009 19:18

Wasabipeanut- brilliant news- yippee lets be friends I am on the Pregnancy after miscarriage thread now but find it moves so fast and a lot of the ladies are in later stages- so in a way it would be great to have a first trimester hand holding thread for all the newly shitting themselves! (I know Happybump and Jardins are in same boat too so handholding with them too! Not sure about starting such a thread though- do you think it would upset the regular knicker checkers?

Tamlin yippee for BFP too- I figure the alcohol and choc intake actually helped us concieve as it defo helps with the grieving and the sooner our bodies are "happy" our wombs are too. Well I'm not sure its strictly true but hey we can't feel guilty for it as its what we very much needed at the time. After the MMC I was a very cheap date - Hic after a glass of wine Then I got my tolerance back, and taste for it back so now am back to avoiding it - sniff!

A heartrate monitor is a great idea thanks! I do have one attached to our cross trainer (but since I am not going to use that for the time being I think lugging it upstairs to be attached to it while using the wii fit is a bit silly (and probably dangerous) so I had better buy one!

Well there is a Due in Feb 2010 thread that I am on that you could go to or we could start a new knicker checkers thread.

I have lurked on that thread and you are right - there are lots of big bumps now! I'm sure they wouldn't be offended if we started up a "4 weeks pg and bricking it" thread?

Thandeka · 27/05/2009 20:31

Yeah I don't want to add myself to the Feb 2010 list at all as I only just remembered today I was still on the Nov 2009 thread so I went on to take myself off it and within minutes there were about 20 messages after mine all banging on about their 2nd trimester woes- only one nice person commented on my post. So don't want that to happen again- at the minute am kind of in denial about this pregnancy until the summer holidays.

Yeah a 4 weeks and bricking it sounds a great plan! Will start it now.

Nuff said Thankdeka. I totally understand.

I joined the Feb 2010 thread in a blast of positive thinking. Now wondering if that was a bit rash.

Hey ho.

Thandeka · 27/05/2009 20:43

Have started the thread so we can go hide there. I wouldn't worry about joining the thread- positive thinking is great and just what we need.
