'Bump on board' in cars

I'm wondering if 'bump on board' car signs are a piss-take? If not, what's the point?

babybill I totally agree, in the years spent trying to get pg, those stupid signs were a constant torment.
Now I have my first baby (and no sign up in car) I have had a friend tell me its irresponsible to drive with child in car without a sign up!!! Huh??!! I was totally speechless.
I am no less likely to crash into anyone because they have a sign up and don't like to think that people would be more likely to crash into me because I don't have one. I really hate them.

babybillandsplodge · 25/05/2009 22:10

Nappystack, no I dont have one either - promised myself that, if I was ever lucky enough to have a child, I would never have one. They are just so pointless.

Lol at your friend - what a prat! Yer, I've had to put bubble wrap on the back of my car to stop all the hundreds of people smacking into the back of me cos they don't know I have a baby .

They are tacky and naff - not for me!

psychomum5 · 25/05/2009 22:11

some people are under the impression that people drive more carefully around you if you carry one of those stickers.

but all the stickers I have ever seen have been on the back window.

which is kind of pointless if you are hit by a twat driving into you head-on, as clearly they cannot see said sticker stating baby on board when it is at the back!!!

babybillandsplodge · 25/05/2009 22:14

psycho, maybe we should display them on the front windscreen too, and the side windows as side impacts are the most dangerous! Course, it would make seeing out of the windows pretty difficult, but all the traffic would clear a path to let us through so we shouldn't have to worry !

psychomum5 · 25/05/2009 22:16

I think they should be on all the doors too (and not the windows, oh no, on the doors, like taxi signs are).

and the bonnet

and the boot

and the roof too, in case a 'plane flies into you.

BananaFruitBat · 25/05/2009 22:16

I saw a great one the other day.

"Ex-husband in boot"

psychomum5 · 25/05/2009 22:16

and even maybe on a kite attached to the ariel..........

Promdress · 25/05/2009 22:25

I don't think the signs are really meant to cover all eventualities!

They are there IMO to warn other drivers why you may be going extra slowly at some point, or even (shock horror) sticking to the speed limit.

People are impatient these days but if there is a good reason for slower than really necessary driving, ie a baby on board, it may help them step back a bit and keep the temper/road rage in check.

I think they're a bit naff however I do have one subtle-coloured one. I also have the yellow and black "Baby on board" but haven't used it because I am concerned it may alert car thieves to the fact that there is a buggy in the boot and/or a decent(ish) car seat and base in the back.

Verity79 · 25/05/2009 22:26

I know most people leave their 'cheeky monkey' stickers up all the time but we use ours as part of in car safety. It may not be how many people use their stickers but I'd want the police/fire/ambo to think to look for a child even if the seat was empty and the sign was up.

I know I am OCD about doing anything I can to make my DDs safe however insignificant (I actually have OCD, it's not me being flippant), thats why my massive 3 year old rides rear facing, and will stay riding rear facing, until she's 6/over 25kg/outgrows seat.

Ack I conceed defeat, they are there so that everyone knows not to get in the way of pg lady with cravings/sleep deprived parents.

NappyStack · 25/05/2009 22:35

The thing is that I drove at/below the speed limit and safely before I had my baby and was never rammed from behind for holding up the speedy drivers so see no need to explain via a sign why I'm driving at the legal limit now that I have a baby in the back IYSWIM.

I think these signs are like Marmite - you love them or hate them. I really hate them!

NappyStack · 25/05/2009 22:44

Promdress Did you choose your subtle coloured one so its less noticeable to thieves? (I had never thought of that drawback to them)

Wouldn't a subtle coloured one also be less noticeable to other drivers. If you're going to have one you might as well have one that will be noticed IYSWIM??

mum27 · 26/05/2009 01:06

The funniest little yellow sign I have seen is "this is just another stupid yellow sign" Kind of sums them up for me :-)

misscreosote · 26/05/2009 09:30

I saw one at sainsbury's the other day: 'perfect family on board'

(Our neighbours have two baby on board signs, oh dear)

Stannie · 26/05/2009 13:59

One of my BF's is a senior paramedic.. she has catagorically stated that the emergency services do not look for or mostly even consider the stickers when attending an RTA. Ever.

Myself, I do try not to rear end cars generally.. not just the ones with a sticker..

Promdress · 26/05/2009 16:58

Nappy - didn't choose the subtle coloured one - my mum bought it for me! I agree it's a bit pointless.

I got the yellow and black one from colleagues in a lucky dip baby bag they got me.

I wouldn't think anyone would look or not look for a baby in a RTA based on a sign - that's just pointless as the variables are too many. However I do hope it might stop some irresponsible driver from driving too close to the rear if they are aware there is a baby inside. Appeal to their sense of decency or something....

Baisey · 26/05/2009 17:10

I remember my DH picking one up when I was pregnant with DS, I told him there would be no way in hell that one of those things were going in the car.
Have you seen the thread where someone saw two signs in the car saying "bitch on board" and "pimp on board" and yes in the back of the car was a little boy and girl...
And I thought all emergency services would be trained to look for passengers regardless of a sign in the window. Common sense isnt it... cars been in accident, you look in back seat for passengers.
