.... please come tell me that your dc are okay. i am 39 wks and on weds i started my fifth course since december. i have not once googled anti-bs and pregnancy and trying to have faith in doctor. but have just read the birth story of a midwife who says she didnt take anti-bs cause of risk of deafness in baby.

what will be will be. no point worrying over milk that hasnt been spilt yet and all that. but nonetheless would really appreciate hearing people tell me about the wonderfully healthy kids they have after pregnancies dogged with loads of antibiotics

I had a really strong course of AB's in the last few weeks of pregnancy for a suspected kidney infection and DS appears fine. If doc has prescribed them then I'm sure they are ok. Stop worrying.

swottybetty · 22/05/2009 18:55

ty. dont suppose you (or anyone else?) know what is considered a strong course? i have had 3 x 5 day 250 amoxillan and 2 x 5 day 500 amoxillan.

not sure about antibiotics as such, but I had to have a lot of medicines while pregnant with DS1 and DS2, and both have had issues with their teeth, that my dentist and the dental surgeon (they have had to have four baby teeth at least removed) said was down to the medication I took just as their teeth were forming in their gums while in-utero.

medical issues they do have some, but they are down to other reasons (ie, being in the family or just bad luck), but the teeth are definately put down to the meds.

please try not to fret tho. I have never heard of contra-indications with antibiotics, but I have heard of contra-indications of NOT taking antibiotics.

BTW, not a medical person of any description.

SpingSpung · 22/05/2009 19:00

Amoxy is one of your lesser a/bs, it's not hardcore as they go.

I wouldn't worry too much.

bronze · 22/05/2009 19:02

was going to mention antibiotics and teeth.

01 · 22/05/2009 19:05

I think it is tetracycline which causes issues with teeth.

Amoxycillin is as Sping says a pretty "inert" antibiotic.

swottybetty · 22/05/2009 19:08

it was my teeth that started this off so that's apt. but must just be baby teeth i guess?

psychomum - a fab midwife said that to me yesterday about risks of infections getting out of control when preg. felt a lot better for her saying it.

has anyone else heard of the deafness thing?

OP posts:
psychomum5 · 22/05/2009 19:12

see!!

stop fretting and start concentrating on getting better.

swottybetty · 22/05/2009 19:16

....noone tells you when you become a mum that you are never ever going to be allowed to "get better' again... one of those great unspoken conspiracies of parenthood

I had to take loads due to a kidney infection which kept coming back. Ds is fine! Try not to worry, your doctor will have checked the right one to use

Streptomycin - I think - is the one that has possible links to deafness.

Honestly Penicllin (i.e. Amoxycillin) is not associated with any harm during pregnancy.

/link{http://www.fetal-exposure.org/ANTIBIOT.html/bit technical} but I think the section on pencillin is quite straightforward. This is based on reputable scientific and medical literature.

PerfectPrefect · 22/05/2009 19:20

check the section on Penicillin. Teh rest is quite technical.

I'm 13wks pg and so far have had four lots of ABs including one containing Methotrexate at week 4 (didn't know I was pg). So far all is still ok but know your worries well.

MrsMattie · 22/05/2009 19:26

I took 4 courses of anti-b's when pregnant with my DD (born last year) and she is fine.

WorzselMummage · 22/05/2009 19:46

I took 3 courses of Eurythromycin, 1 of Penicillin and 1 of Trimethroprim when i was pg with DS..

He's fine :

alittleteapot · 22/05/2009 20:08

I had antibiotics throughout my last pregnancy because of chronic urine infections. DD is not only fine, she is wonderful!

I'm now in second pg and no utis but loads of chest infections so already about four courses of anti-bs. Had 20 week scan today and all fine. Much more dangerous to mum and baby if infections are left untreated. Doctors are very cautious about which ones they will prescribe - lots are completely fine.

Don't worry!

swottybetty · 22/05/2009 23:16

ty all i feel loads better.

out of curiousity - those who breastfed did you get mastitis after having taken so many ABs? also, how did you feel having so many infections and taking so many ABs? i am feeling v sorry for self and utterly awful tbh.

OP posts:
littleboyblue · 22/05/2009 23:23

I had loads of AB's trough my 2nd pregnancy, mostly amoxicilin(sp?) and trimethoprim and also had IV AB's during labour, 4 courses of penicillin. Ds2 seems fine, he is alert and responds to all kinds of stimulation.
Most AB's are fine during pregnancy. The manufacturers have to keep their arses covered though and issue warnings on the box but that is because it is very hard to find a pregnant woman willing to take part in medical trials.
I would imagine everything will be fine and your doctor wouldn't issue a drug if not absolutely necessary.
They will only treat if the 'cure' outweighs the risks.
For example, UTI's during pregnancy can lead to premature labour and delivery, therefore it is worth treating quickly as the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the pregnancy iyswim.

alittleteapot · 23/05/2009 09:50

no probs breastfeeding at all and no adverse effects from ABs first pg, but you're fine to take probiotics in pg i think if you are experiencing side effects. this time infections have made me feel lousy so ABs feel a blessing. good luck and hope you feel better soon.

What I would say to those preggers and intending on a hospital birth - is to try and take some probiotics if you can, such as a decent acidophilus supplement.

Neo natal units are well known to have a high rate of c difficile lurking about, indeed many newborns carry it harmlessly even if not born in hospital (not sure why)

You're more susceptible to contracting it if you've been on antibiotics, so try and get your digestive system back to full flora before you go in iyswim, just to minimise the risk - which is small anyway, but still.
