Just got back from GPs. Was sitting at a roundabout and a delivery van drove into the back of me, shunted the car forward a couple of feet.

Dr says that baby is well protected so nothing to worry about, but he didn't really check me over at all. Does anyone have any experiences of car shunts when pregnant?

I drove into someone else when I was 6 months pregnant - hit them hard enough to spin them and wrote their car off

Dd2 was fine. Despite me also falling downstairs when pg with her. I do tend to be accident prone.

I would only worry if you get any pains etc. Did you have any bruising from the seatbelt or anything else that would indicate any stomach injury?

FabulousBakerGirl · 22/05/2009 13:19

I would phone your midwife tbh. I find GPs can be blase towards pregnant mums at times.

Hawkmoth · 22/05/2009 13:20

If you are Rhesus negative you will need an Anti-D shot. Plus I would contact your MW team anyway just for reassurance if nothing else. I'm sure they would fit you in for a check.

Hope you're alright apart from this, must have been scary.

NigellaTufnel · 22/05/2009 13:24

It was rather scary, and I had ds in the back, thankfully strapped in to the max, he doesn't seem to have noticed. God bless child seats.

Am off to phone the mw. Very good idea.

I am sure that the doc is right, but please get checked anyway as you will only fret.

I had a car accident at 28wks pregnant with DS1. shunted from behind into the path of another car, I hit the steering wheel with such force I broke my ribs.

altho I was injured, baby was completely fine. yes I had to be admitted to hospital, but baby had no effect on him at all, it was all on me.

docs said the same............babies are very well cushioned inside us. our bodies are made to cushion them.

take care tho. you have had a shock so need to be gentle on yourself for a few days.

NigellaTufnel · 22/05/2009 13:44

Called the MW - onto answering machine and got another number 'to speak to another MW'.

Got half way through explaining when MW barked - 'Go to A&E. We can't help you.' Then put the phone down on me.

I have no symptoms as such, just wanted to talk it through with someone.

Also I don't want to drive on the M1 to the hospital with a shunted car, and obviously this does not merit an ambulance, so to go to A&E would involve at least an hour and a half's journey each way with a buggy, and no guaruntee of a taxi or bus to get us to the hospital after a train journey. Just to have a five minute chat with someone.

oooh, stupid MW......why did she not just realise that you just need reassurance over and above the what the GP has said.

if you are anything like me, all I wanted and needed at the time of my accident was to have them listen in to the heartbeat.......was reassuring enough.

any way that you can ring GP, or even for your DH/P, mum, friend to ring the MW again and just explain that all you need is reassurance???

psychomum5 · 22/05/2009 13:48

sorry, lots of reassuring/reassurance there

FabulousBakerGirl · 22/05/2009 13:51

Phone again

at the midwife.

I would be tempted to report her tbh.

NigellaTufnel · 22/05/2009 13:52

Reassurance is good!
I have left a message with my lovely community midwife and she is on duty tomorrow, so hopefully I can talk to her then.

TBH if there is something wrong - which I hopefully doubt - there is nothing really that can be done.

I thought when we moved out of London I would have seen the back of unpleasant midwives.

I was hit from the left hand side at 27 weeks pg. Very very scary experience. I went to the maternity unit and they checked me over and listened to the baby.

Call your gp and tell them you are coming down and get them to listen to the heartbeat. Refuse to leave until they do it .

I'm sure you will be fine but you need to have a check, mainly for your peace of mind.

psychomum5 · 22/05/2009 13:56

very very much doubt that anything will be wrong.

from the way you describe it, you have not suffered a blow to the tummy, so baby really will be well cushioned in there by your body as well as the waters.

please don;t panic tho if you wake up in the morning stiff from head to toe. as you are pregnant, all your muscles and ligaments are softer and more elastic, so whiplash and general bumps can do more damage, so hurt more. they did to me! that does not mean in anyway that baby will be affected tho, so focus on that until you talk to your own MW

NigellaTufnel · 22/05/2009 14:31

Thanks everyone.
I will see if the MW can listen for the baby's heartbeat tomorrow.

Ds is having to put up with a lot of CBeeBies today as I sit with my feet up. He doesn't look as if it's that tough.

And just found out that the driver has previous form of crashing into people.

I cannot expressed how pissed off I am at that.
