Does anyone know anything about restless leg syndrome?

My poor DSis is 10 weeks and suffering dreadfully from what her midwife says is restless leg syndrome. She describes it as very painful pins and needles in her leg, especially at night, and she isn't sleeping a wink.
She says she has had it before during her period, but now pregnant (with DC1), has it constantly.
The midwife says there is nothing you can do to alleviate it - is this true?
Does anyone have any ideas about how to get this under control?

Any ideas will be much appreciated.

A few things to try ( they work for me )
*stretch out before bed time- like you would if you had just been on a run ham strings, calves etc
*excersize really helped me in fact I only suffer when I don't do anything- aqua aerobics is a good low risk class or walking
*calcium is meant to help also

  • I also slept better when i forced my self to have a late night (although this is usually after 9pm as i am a wuss) *experiemnet with diff positions with pillows

hope it helps

I get this, all the time, worse when pg and also if anaemic (hence worse when pg I think). Mineral deficiency of some kind certainly seems to aggravate - when I get back, I take iron tablets. Very cold showers run on the back of the legs can offer some relief, stretching out as pippa251 said. I find it's worse if I get hot.

Ooh, thanks TamTam for the link and Zoe for the tips.

tonic water and bananas help me.

I suffer it all the time, and especially badly when I was pregnant, but tis only since advice on MN that I have done the tonic water and banana thing.

oh, foods high in calcium and magnesium help too............I have just started taking them in supplement form, but not sure if they are recommended during pregnancy, so would think foods instead would be a better way.

I used to get restless leg ALL the time, now I only get it occasionally, I was told it was due to nutrition too, although I heard zinc

Also getting up and stretching when it hits, and making sure my legs are warm also help.....

It is the most annoying affliction! The poor thing.
