Early Pregnancy Ultrasound

Hi all,

I may seem like I am panicking un-necessarily, but I was wondering if it is possible to get a scan at 5.5 wks?

I am going to California next Friday to get married and I am away for 3 weeks and I am like a nervous wreck, so I was wondering if it is possible to get an ultrasound before I go to put my mind at rest... I am happy to pay for it if I feel more reassured so I can relax and enjoy my holiday...

Any suggestions greatly received!

They could do it transvaginally, but they likely wouldn't be able to see anything and could cause even more panic.

I would just go on holiday and worry about it when you get back!

Hi Laura233,

If you are only 5.5 weeks, the chances are highly likely that the baby's heart would not have started beating yet and that might worry you more? There's not that much to see at 5.5 weeks TBH. I had a scan at just gone 7 weeks with my first pregnancy at the Fetal Medicine Centre and they said they won't like scheduling people in for an early scan till at least 7 weeks so they can be sure of a heartbeat then. Try not to worry too much and enjoy your wedding! Best wishes!

What they would be able to see would be very little and to be honest nothing would be gained. I would just go on holiday and have scan on return.

agree with everyone else.
i had a scan at 6 weeks and you really can see very little. just a tiny sac. it's doubtful if you'd even see a heartbeat

ok, thanks for your advice guys... im just so terrified of having a mc. I just wish I could relax. When do they normally book your scan for, is it nearer 10 weeks or 12? Who books it the dr or the midwife as I wont see my midwife till I get back?

your first scan will be around 12 weeks.

to be brutally honest, if you're going to miscarry you will. I know that isn't what you want to hear, but it's true. a scan might let you see that there is something there, but it isn't going to actually change anything iyswim?
I've had mc's in the past and it's horrid, but there is nothing they can do about it

I had a scan at 5.5 weeks-no heartbeat,so I had to wait another week and be scanned again (I had been spotting)when there was a heartbeat. All there was at 5.5 weeks was a tiny little dot.Don't worry about it,the thought of a mc is frightening I know, but there would be nothing you could do either way.All the scan will show is what a preg test would also show, that you are pregant.Congratulations on the pregnancy by the way-is it your first?

Laura, it's usually the midwife who books your scan although it depends on your area and some don't even offer routing dating scans (our hospital has only just started to - first 2 pregnancies I had no scans until 20 weeks). If it's the midwife I guess the systems are fairly efficient because they don't usually want you to have a booking appointment until 8-10 weeks, and still manage to sort scans out for a few weeks later. If you are going to have a dating scan, don't be surprised if it isn't at 12 weeks - some trusts say 10-14 weeks to givei themselves more flexibility. Best wishes for the wedding and pregnancy.

Hi,

Thanks for all your messages.

I am going to book a private scan for when I get back off holiday, I will be 9.5 weeks so will make me feel better and I think it will be worth it, plus it will give me a reason to come back off holiday!

Thanks again,

Laura
