Too much amniotic fluid - any reassuring stories

I'm 38 weeks tomorrow.

Last week doc thought baby was transverse so sent me for a scan. This happened yesterday and baby is in correct positon but I have very high amniotic fluid.

All scans so far have been fine, no abnormalities detected.

I had a blood glucose test way back at 20 odd weeks, all fine. Had a blood prick test on the Day assessment unit yesterday (where the sonographer sent me st away) which was normal at 4.2. Bloods came back today at 4.2 so all is well and late gestational diabetes has been ruled out.

I'm left with fetal abnormalities/intestinal blockages from my reading.

I had planned an elective CS after having a fit last time and my consultant talked me into giving a natural birth a go. That was fine, but I was insisting on a CS at 40 as he was not going to let me go over.

I've two weeks to go and read that I'm at risk of prolapsed cord as there is so much fluid it can 'gush' out and the cord drops with it. My uterus may also take a while to contract leading to risk of post delivery bleeding.

I'm seeing the midwives today. Would you demand a CS asap?
Have you had lots of unexplained amniotic fluid with a healty baby at the end of it?

All reassurance greatly appreciated.

yes i had this. (almost identical to you) Step away from goggling on this!!!
I had to have blood tests etc to see if i had gestational diabetes, the scan also picked up that my dd had grown ENORMOUSLY, and that i had high levels of amniotic fluid and baby was transverse.
My dd was born of normal size, the scan was wrong, my bloods all came back fine.
I was booked in for an induction becasue of size etc, but went into labour before this.
The only thing i can say is that when my waters broke the really broke!!!! I went through about two packs of matenrity pads in a few hours!
My dd is very healthy and currently two!
Good luck, i know how scary this felt for me, but it all turned out fine, and i have read very similar stories on mm as well ...

Krugerparkrules, thanks for the fast reply and the reassurance.
I know Google is a terror, but I cant stop thinking is it the tea, the coffee, the wine the beer?
This baby is avg size, dd was a belter at 9,13.
And I found my first stretch mark this morning after religiously applying my oils morning and night since I found out I was pregnant.
I know this is nothing compared to the worry about the baby but I've had enough, I just want it out now and to see with my own eyes that it's healthy.
Glad all is well with your dd, mine is a gorgeous 18.5 months and the only thing keeping me from total panic!

My SIL had this, they just didn't want to let her get too overdue so they induced her at 41 weeks instead of waiting until 42 and she had controlled ARM to ensure the cord prolapse thing didn't happen.

Do you live the near the hospital? IIRC the only advice she was given was to go in straight away if she started to contract and make sure that she always had her notes on her and if necessary call an ambulance if her waters broke but they weren't so concerned that she had to be induced or CS early.

Good luck, I remember how HUGE and uncomfortable she was and desperate to get the little man out!

And was all ok with the baby Ewe?

I had this too and was hospitalised for 3 weeks before the birth (elective section).

Worry was cord prolapse so as Ewe said, get to hospital fast if anything starts.

My dd is now 5, she was fairly large at 9lb 4oz.

Salleroo · 21/05/2009 12:13

Thanks for all your assurances. Yes hosp is only down the road so can get there in a hurry.

Yep, baby was fine, he was/is a whopper though! He is 7 months younger than my admittedly rather delicate DD and he is the same size. His Dad is a 6ft4 rugby player type though .

In her case they had actually underestimated the water and her DS was quite a bit bigger than expected so I don't necessarily think it's always as accurate as they claim either.

Salleroo · 21/05/2009 13:12

DD was 9,13, DH is 6'2, so was a tad worried that I was growing an even bigger monster, but the baby is still zipping about, we got really good shots of it as there is so much fluid.
DD at 1mth was in her 3-6mth sizes. She is dinky and cute now though, tall but dinky
Still I suppose you never know. I wish I could just lift the lid, check everything is ok and then I could relax and deal with the discomfort.

Bumping for the evening crowd. My fluid is not just up at or above the line its way over. Just back from the midwives and she cant believe they were not going to further moniter me but leave me till my next appt on june 2nd.

Going to 'walk in' to my consultant's clinic on Tue or maybe even before then.

Back to being slightly worried.

You'll be fine! I had this and baby (8lb 2ow) was perfectly healthy (is now 5 and parading round the house dressed as a princess). Advice I was given if I went into labour was to get on all fours and call an ambulance in case of cord prolapse. Though because I also had an unstable lie I was actually admitted to hospital to await a cs at 39 weeks. The extra fluid meant that dd was bobbing about in there. It's obviously good advice that you are monitored.
