Because the look on dd's face while she watched me vomiting into the washing up bowl was heartbreaking.

Just had the same problem (luckily it's finally lifted) and ds swung bewteen thinking it was hilarious and upsetting .

If you've got any family who are willing to help, please use them. I'm extremely lucky that I've got my retired parents only a half hour's drive away and there were a couple of occasions where I had to phone them up and they (gorgeous people that they are ) came and took ds out for a few hours while puked.

Other things that helped were...
Lying down on the sofa and letting ds play doctos, covering me with blankets, teddies etc.
Telling him that 'mummy feels a little bit ill but is OK'.
Eating often and ignoring that ds was snacking a lot with me. It was only for a few weeks.
Feeding him meals from the freezer on bad days, as cooking at tea-time was just a no-go sometimes.
Getting dh to take over most of the childcare on weekends so that I could go to bed.

Hope that you're feeling better soon and hope that all goes well.

Sorry didn't have this problem my sweet natured caring ds thought the noise of me being sick was hilarious. My only problem was being quick enogh to remove the sick bucket before he got his hands in it. Must be a boy thing. Later on though we did buy a little doctors play kit to get him used to the fact that mummy has to see the doctor alot but not because something is wrong but to check mummy is ok.

I think reassuring them that mummy is okay helps a lot. i vomited 10 times a day for 4 months, so ds (2.5) just got really used to it quite quickly. i vomit every time i change his nappy. i think he now thinks that's just part of the whole routine.
just do the best you can, get help, and try to explain what is going on in toddler terms. i tried never to blame it on 'the baby' because i don't want to risk ds resenting her before she's even born.

I told my daughter (2 yrs at the time) that I had some burps stuck and I was just letting them out!! She knows what a burp is, and after a day or two looking a bit anxious, she quickly saw that I was ok again after retching...yuk! And she also had to get used to mummy lying on the sofa because she was "feeling a bit poorly but is ok really". Its such a balancing act between telling them you are 'ill' and not letting them worry.
Hope you feel ok/better soon, congrats too. xxx

That's good advice audreyraines and I deliberately didn't say anything about the baby until after the sickness had gone for that reason (and several miscarriages).

Ds knows that 'growing a baby sometimes makes mummy tired' but he knows that I can still read stories, etc. even if I'm not up to tearing around the garden.

Ive been stressing how poorly I feel before I know im going to be sick, then when finished I come out of the bathroom with a big smile on my face saying "all better" So DS is not so worried now.
Although he got up from his nap the other day sayin he fet sick rushed into the bathroom spat in the loo and declared himself much better.

Trikken · 20/05/2009 20:00

Baisy my ds does this too, but with my 'emergency bowl'(clean obv). he gives me a back rub sometimes too which is sweet before declaring "your going to be ok now mummy."

audreyraines · 20/05/2009 20:47

that's really sweet baisey and trikken. i think they do just get worried about their precious mummies, and are okay once they realise we'll be alright.
