Baby's habits in the womb - do they carry on post-birth?

For example - my child is pretty dormant during the day, but come night time and the early hours she's doing the macarena all over my insides.

To me this suggests she's going to be a total night-owl when she's out. Will I ever sleep again?

Movement in the womb is not related to how they'll be 'on the outside' imo. They tend to move more at night because you're lying still and you notice it more, and also because when you're active/moving they're asleep.

peggotty · 17/05/2009 11:19

Most newborns sleep is all over the place initially anyway! How pregnant are you?

McSnail · 17/05/2009 11:23

I'm seven months. Night times are like having Animal from the Muppets drumming my organs, haha!

She will be a night owl when she's out because all newborns are! Doesn't mean she'll stay that way though.

Not with me. Both my babies were very quiet during the day and quite active late at night and in the early hours of the morning. Both totally different sleepwise once they were here.

McSnail · 17/05/2009 11:37

I know things eventually settle down anyway (and I know there will definitely be lots of sleepless nights) but I was curious as to whether womb patterns carried on into childhood...

Anyhoo - thanks for replying.

Thank goodness the general concensus is that the womb habits don't carry on post birth. My bump is literally on the go 24/7 and I have no idea when it sleeps... if ever!

BikeRunSki · 18/05/2009 08:46

Well my baby was undiagnosed footling breech, and he has wanted to stand up since he was about 4 weeks old!

Tigermax · 18/05/2009 12:31

This thread has brought back memories... Both my DS's were complete maniacs in the womb and are the most physically active children I know. They also both had hiccups quite frequently pre- and post-birth. They reacted noticably to music and are both musical children. So I definitely believe that they can start showing their personalities before they are born!

It's my understanding that most (unborn) babies are pretty active at night because that's when the mother is still. When the mother is moving around and active during the day they are "rocked" to sleep. Could be wrong - but sounds sweet, doesn't it?

diedandgonetodevon · 18/05/2009 12:34

I don't really remember ds's sleeping/waking habits but on our scans he was always tapping his feet. He's seven months now and he's sat on my knee wiggling his feet just as we saw him do on the scans

rainbowdays · 18/05/2009 12:57

YES - Sorry the activities in the womb can definitely carry on outside.

my ds1 started kicking me at 7am every morning during pregnancy, whether I was awake or not! And at age 5 he still wakes at 7am. It is as if his internal clock wakes at 7am no matter what!

Also the positions that my babies were in the womb were the way they slept when they first came out. DS1 with his head backwards, DS2 with his feet crossed.

But for those who have nightowl babies inside, it might just be because you are relaxed at night and they are getting up energy from not being "rocked to sleep" as
Tigermax says!

Ds had a lot of hiccups when I was pg with him, and often has hiccups now... does that help?

CaptainKarvol · 18/05/2009 13:14

DS was a bouncing, hiccuping livewire in the womb, and had a strange way of waiting before responding to my friendly bump proddings with an answering kick. He is still wired most of the time, and oddly hesitant about responding to situations, thinks before he acts.

DD was a far calmer pregnancy - is now the most chilled 10 week baby ever.

passmethegin · 18/05/2009 13:24

My third bump was so active, i was seriously worried. Now he's here he's totally chilled out so complete opposite!

Hawkmoth · 18/05/2009 14:58

Oh I do hope so.

This baby wakes up about half an hour after I do in the mornings. I can but hope.

FrankMustard · 18/05/2009 14:59

well, ds3 sucked his thumb every time we had a scan - and he still does it now!

TamTam29 · 18/05/2009 15:46

Well although DS (20 months) awake/sleep patterns are different to what they were in the womb I dont think his "personality" is,

he was VERY active at both scans - whizzing round in circles and always reacted to any noises and would be very active if any music came on in the background - I would get kicked to death in the car driving to work with the radio on! He is still a very active and lively little boy, was crawling at 7 months & walking at 10 and still loves any music!

I am now 39 weeks and this one seems much more laid back, was very chilled at both scans (was even asked to drink some lucozade at 20 week scan to liven them up a bit!) This time I am constantly worrying about how many times I have felt them move, So i am expecting a very differnt child to his/her big brother!

mumof3tobe · 21/05/2009 03:01

DS1 was very active in womb, had hiccups, kicked in the ribs, punched in the bladder and still at 5.2yrs is very active.

DD1 Was a bit calmer than DS and still calmer than DS now and she is 3.5yrs. She didn't kick or punch my bladder as much. She didn't like me sleeping on my left and would keep moving until I was on my right. When she was born she wouldn't sleep on her back but would settle on her side no problem.

I must be a very deep sleeper cos neither of them kept me up at night in womb.

duchesse · 21/05/2009 05:01

This one, 27+4, can practically kick the laptop off my lap already, and is active for most of the day and night, barring a few 1 hour naps, so I sincerely hope not!

Having said that, s/he is so far behaving remarkably like my oldest, and we coped with him and sleepless ways... A ten hours' sleep per 24 man from day one.

duchesse · 21/05/2009 05:09

In fact oldest son has just appeared, up for the day at 5:06am. Not bad for a 15 yr old...
