Gestational Diabetes in second pregnancy

Hello does anyone have any advice regarding gestational diabetes in a second pregnancy. Had it last time but was diet control. Does it still kick in at the same stage of pregnancy?

I was undiagnosed in my first pregnancy, we think, so can't really help with your question. Mine was diagnosed relatively early in my 2nd pregnancy, around 18 weeks or so, but was borderline.

My diabetes nurse moved me onto insulin very quickly, which I suspect was a mistake as we had to massively cut my dose towards the end. I stuck rigidly to the diet, exercised, and 2 weeks post birth, I have lost significant amounts of weight. My BMI is 4 points lower than it was at the start.

There is really no way to know beanz. But I would think they would test you around the same time.

llareggub that's normal, to need less near the end.

It was at 30 weeks though, my consultant agreed it was too early to be normal.

Oh yeah, that is pretty early!!

As someone who was diabetic before they got pregnant, I actually suggest that people be put on insulin right away (not that I am in any way a health professional!). I just think it is easier to get control, and you aren't as hungry, as control by diet.

But, of course, every person is different!

For me the diet worked as I was overweight and lost 4 stone! Unfortunately regained some of it trying to sort out my return to work which took 3 months!

Can't help too much as this is my first pregnancy with gd. But I have been told that if I have another pregnancy after this one, it will be automatically assumed that gd will develop so no need for gtt. They refer to the dietician after your booking appointment and advise to start monitoring your blood sugar from then on so that any signs of gd developing can be dealt with straight away. Hth

Two friends of mine didn't develop it in subsequent pregnancies. They suspect that the lifestyle changes they adopted after their first pregnancies (exercise, diet etc) meant that their sugars were stable and under control during their pregnancies to the extent that they probably did have it but managed it effectively.
