Baby clothes - what size?

Is it worth getting newborn size clothes? Or just going straight for 0-3 month size? I'm planning to use re-usable nappies, which I've heard are bulkier than disposables. Does this make a difference to size of clothes to go for? Finally getting round to a shopping expedition this week, so grateful for advice!

i used newborn and early baby at first, and mine were in reusables.
best tip? get them on ebay as the condition is good as they are outgrown so fast they are like new.
saves you the money, cos buying new is so expensive.
get new 0-3 as the baby will wear them much longer so worth the money.

I personally found that even newborn size was enormous,dd was 6lb 10oz so not far off average and wore the size down from newborn in mothercare stuff. My advice would be get newborn clothes but just short sleeved vests and normal babygros (not loads) and get more 0-3 month size.

Scans often give an indication of your baby's weight, if you are later in pregnancy you may get a better idea of which size would be more suitable (ie if he/she is 8lb + go more for 0-3 months)

get newborn - but don't get much - you can always buy more when you see what size the baby is!

My DS1 and 2 were both bigger babies (9.2 and 10.5) and even then were in 'newborn' for a week or so.

mind you in M&S clothes DS2 was in the next size up from newborn (0-1m) - M&S newborn is for 7 lbers.

Thanks - really helpful. Baby was bang on average size according to last check-up (34 weeks). Have a scan on Monday, so hopefully will get a more accurate picture then!

oh yes agree there thats s good point!
go for size in POUNDS not age, as mothercare reckon new babys are 10lb , and next or m&s reckon they are 7lb.

I'd get a few newborn things, as sockmonster says - vests and sleepsuits as that's all you need for first few weeks. DS was 6lb 6oz so we had to go out and buy lots of early baby sized stuff, so you never know what will happen. He's now 10 weeks and only just growing out of newborn size, so we've got our money's worth!

A lot of people will buy you this type of thing, so maybe better to just buy newborn and see who gets you what. Shops are usually open, and your DP can manage to pick up plain babygros from tesco/M&S.

Check different shops stuff too as sizes do vary - I bought a few 3 packs from different places then went nback for more to the one that fitted best. People will buy you 0-3 and 3-6 as gifts so a few newborn will be useful.
