im just wondering about what the risk is as yesterday i fell asleep on my back, it was only for a toal of 2 hours and i have felt the baby moving since but is there something to do with the babys air supply being affected. its just been niggling at me since yesterday.

it's to do with the major blood vesel for you, afaik. try not to worry, all sounds fine!
I had to sleep on my back, all night every night due to a lower back injury, right through all three pgs. I resorted to making myself some crazy nest with bf pillows, banana pillows and half of the cushions in the house but you falling asleep for a couple of hours with no bad effects afterwards doesn't sound like a cause for concern. Worrying is compulsory though, isn't it

Really, really don't worry. It doesn't make a damn bit of difference. All this sleep on your left hand side business is fairly recent, women have been sleeping however they liked for centuries!

At the end of my pregnancy the only way I could get to sleep was on my back due to crippling spd, and I was fine, baby was fine. In fact we were a lot happier for getting some sleep!

thank you thank you!!! i had started panicking that i might have caused some damage. it was because my hips were so sore and it was the only way i could get comfy. i have to say it was a really good sleep!!

(I recommend you make a nest then and make a habit of it)

good idea, one week till due date, could be a long week otherwise.

I did this all the way through - I think if you can and it doesn't feel uncomfortable it's probably ok.

Wilkiepedia · 14/05/2009 11:48

It's too uncomfy for me to sleep on back but I can't see it doing any harm otherwise we would all be advised at our antenatal visits and it certainly hasn't been mentioned in mine!!

I am trying to stick to left side as bubs is being naughty and not twisting to a full anterior position so his side is against my right side IYSWIM and MW wants him round with his back against my tummy.

Oh the joys eh!

If you're compressing the blood vessels, you'll know because you start feeling faint and awful. It would wake you up, I'm pretty sure.

At about 34 weeks with my twins I had to go to the dentist who tipped me far back in his chair and kept me there for ages cleaning plaque. I knew this was unwise as I'd had many scans where the midwives always said 'Let us know if you feel faint lying back' and were very careful of me. Even so I thought the dentist would know best and didn't complain. I soon felt terrible, could barely see and the room was fading around me. Dentist didn't seem to notice a thing and sent me reeling on my way.

Shouldn't a trained professional know better, especially since dental treatment is free in pregnancy so they probably see a lot of pregnant women?

Anyway, longwinded way to say - If you are comfortable don't worry.

i was told by the physio that i should sleep on my back, as my hips and pelvis were very painful at night, sleeeping on my side. She said it is only if you or the baby are thought to have certain specific problems that you shouldnt sleep on your back.

oh, i dont know.....why can't someone just say once and for all?!!
